Food you don't understand

Crumbed ham.

I don't get it.
What does the crumb bring?
It can't be textural as it's usually soggy.
Can any crumbed ham aficionados please enlighten me?

Are there other food mysteries you'd like clearing up?

Iced buns - hot dog buns with sugar on. Why?!
Sweet pastry - sausage roll, yes. Croissant or turnover, yuck!
Coriander - tastes like soap.

Yes you're right about the colour - almost neon orange!
It sometimes comes disguised as "breaded" ham.
Still none the wiser as to its purpose though 🤷‍♀️

It's cooked with the crumbs for a start.

But it also has extra seasoning within the mix, which give a subtle infused flavour. Paprika is normally the main one, so the colour is more so. Very slight but changes it enough, and the texture is very slightly different as well as a result.

All subtle, but obviously different.

Clams in pasta or pizza dishes where you have to, I suppose, remove the shells as you go. Just seems like a logistical nightmare.

I'm sort of with you (I live in yorkshire now so don't shout about it). I don't hate them but I almost never bother eating them unless I have eaten everything else and I am still hungry.

With you both. I’ve never liked them. Everyone else loves them though so I do make them

Anything described as being done with human hands, like ‘hand pulled pork.’ Apart from sounding like a euphemism it just makes me think of someone’s grubby hands over my food

Temperature

Gazpacho, No! Things that meant to warm being served at room temperature, Ew!

It should be served cold, not room temperature. I love it, especially when I flop at 40C, I revive instantly.

Do you mean it's cooked with the crumb on? When I used to work on the deli at waitrose and the cooked ham came un-crumbed and we crumbed it.

It’s just pulled pork isn’t it, not hand pulled?! It’s pulled apart by utensils, not hands!

Why people eat dead bodies? I’ll never understand it.

Ooh an easy one - they’re so tasty!

unless you mean dead humans? In which case, not tried that

whoamI00 · 12/09/2025 13:56

christmas pudding

Ilovemyshed · 12/09/2025 13:57

Dessicated and flaked coconut. Dry and vile tasting. Seems like its used in alot of biscuits too. I like coconut milk and water though 🤷🏽‍♀️

pinkspeakers · 12/09/2025 13:58

Saffron.
It's so expensive and supposed to be special. But even when I use a tiny amount it tastes weird to me. Kind of musty.

You’re right, that’s a poor example. Here are some others

‘hand-scored pork’
‘hand stretched pizza’
’hand wrapped samosas’

get your filthy paws off my silky draws!

Just because you don't understand it doesn't mean they are not delicious 😋

Anotheronelikeit · 12/09/2025 14:00

Soup - why blend actually foods into a puree and then use it as a meal?
Iced coffee. If I offer someone a coffee and hand it over cold would you really drink it? But put some ice cubes in it and it's delicious?!
Mint leaves on top of desserts in restaurants. I don't want a smelly leaf (even if it does smell nice)
Whipped cream? It's a textural nightmare!

😁
It really depends on what I'm having with the chips with to be honest.
And the location.

If I'm in Europe, it will be mayo.
My mum's homemade chips are just so good hot out of the pan with ketchup.
My local chippy has the best curry sauce.
If I'm having fish and chips, then tartare sauce please.
In Scotland, it has to be chippy sauce of course!

I applaud your dedication to getting the right sauces at different places 😄

The prepackaged stuff was for supernarkets, although it was 17 years ago.

I suppose you can add it for the flavour still. Won't be as good though, especially if it is also cheaped out by not having the paprika etc in it.

Avocados. Just NO.

Couldn’t live without avocados. Meat on the other hand.. not food to me. Happy to make it for others though.

Hmmm - never looked very good TBH. It was also my least favourite job. The ham was slimy and gross out of the vacuum pack and even with gloves on I hated touching it. Yuck.

I had a friend who did the same job and she said the same, she described it so viscerally that I’m scarred for life 😂

DolphinOnASkateboard · 12/09/2025 14:07

Stilton, and indeed blue cheese in general.

Ansjovis · 12/09/2025 14:08

Cucumber. I'm outing myself here if anyone knows me but I absolutely cannot stand the smell as it makes me feel sick. I've discussed this with many people and in my experience people tend to fall into two camps: either it has no smell at all or they agree it has a strong smell. My completely uneducated theory is that there's a genetic component that determines which camp we sit in and unfortunately I am in completely the wrong field of work to even attempt to prove this.

Rosemary61 · 12/09/2025 14:08

Cucumber / cucumber sandwiches

Horrible, watery sludge 🤢
