Food you don't understand

Crumbed ham.

I don't get it.
What does the crumb bring?
It can't be textural as it's usually soggy.
Can any crumbed ham aficionados please enlighten me?

Are there other food mysteries you'd like clearing up?

Well I bloody love oysters, but I think anything from McDonald's and the like is vile, oysters =pure unadulterated food, McDonald's = processed crap your body can't deal with. Also agree with the fruit in cheese yuk,

I remember reading a post where someone had found an eyelid complete with lashes in their sausage roll. Eating food from a facility that processes dead animals is always also is going to be fraught with peril I’m afraid.
I did find a machinery nut in my Jordans cereal once.

That's one hell of a way to add iron to your diet!

Absolutely adore okra. Favourite vegetable ever. Slimey just means they are not being cooked properly xx

Anything with okra in it.

I am a broad-minded foodie who will happily eat almost anything, but I am baffled by the inclusion of okra in things.

It's like somebody thought, 'Ooh, no, this delicious curry / stew / rice dish is WAY too nice - let's take it down a notch by adding this bitter, stringy yet also curiously slimy green stuff to it.'

Tried to reply and failed so now I have a random okra fan post lurking somewhere. Spinach tho, why do people eat the bloody stuff - devils work. Tastes like metallic, sludge. xx

Flash fry it with ground spices. Little bit of oil. Bingo. Cook until it’s slightly charred. x

Olives. Nearly everyone says they didn't like them the first time – so why carry on??

I kept getting them for breakfast in Turkey. At the start I wouldn't touch them. I then tried them and persevered. Now I love them.

ChippySauce · 16/09/2025 17:40

Thanks.
Is the okra left whole or halved length ways?
I'd like to try it 🙂

Spaghetti. There are easier pastas to pick up and eat.

BleakAF · 16/09/2025 17:50

Macaroni pie, carbs in carbs. Ditto chip barm.

Macaroni pie, carbs in carbs. Ditto chip barm.

I have to confess that, even as a macaroni lover, I have found macaroni pie to be quite hard going! I had one in Scotland on a long drive and after about two bites could not manage more and had to hold the damn thing for a good hour or three. It was too greasy and soggy to put down anywhere.

They are an abomination !

Signed a Scottish woman 😀

I’ve had macaroni pie In Greece and Barbados, I’ve never seen it in UK, I didn’t like it

Likewise burger chains that put battered chicken or fish in a bun.

CalzoneOnLegs · 16/09/2025 18:37

@BleakAF nooooooooo ! A chip butty is one of lifes simple highlights 🥪

DeanStockwelll · 16/09/2025 20:30

I agree @CalzoneOnLegs , chip butties with lots of butter and black pepper are one of life's simple pleasures .

CalzoneOnLegs · 16/09/2025 21:34

@DeanStockwelll and stokes tomato ketchup and nasty warburtons thick sliced white ❤️

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 16/09/2025 22:14

I have type 2 diabetes - a chip butty with lots of butter is but a dream for me now. 😢

CalzoneOnLegs · 16/09/2025 22:16

@SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius I’m sorry 😢

DeanStockwelll · 16/09/2025 22:58

@CalzoneOnLegs ah now there we will have to agree to disagree, I prefer a proper oven bottom barm , and I'm not that fussed about ketchup. Just butter and pepper for me please.
@SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius my commiserations 😞

CalzoneOnLegs · 16/09/2025 23:48

@DeanStockwelll the only time I had chips in a barm was at Blackpool, it was lovely and I would happily have one again, as long as the chip to bread ratio is correct I am happy 😅
I really really want a chip butty now 🐷

Sliced sideways so they are like little wheels. Cut off the top (with the stem) bit but keep the tip. Those bits are deliciously crispy when cooked. And if you are a coriander fan (l am) scatter some ripped leaves over the top. xx

I love spinach. It's one of my favourite foods. If it is on a menu in a restaurant that is almost always the dish I will have.

Egg and spinach pizza is to die for!
