Food you don't understand

Crumbed ham.

I don't get it.
What does the crumb bring?
It can't be textural as it's usually soggy.
Can any crumbed ham aficionados please enlighten me?

Are there other food mysteries you'd like clearing up?

Is gravy made by boiling, as in will it still be boiling when poured into a jug? (I like roasts but I don't have gravy with them, so am ignorant about making it).

I haven't a clue if it's "proper" gravy.
My mum uses the Bisto stuff and adds boiling water and mixes it 🤷

I want to know now how they made it in big houses in the old days! And if it's true that it was to make the food warm again.

Isn't the proper stuff the meat juices thickened with flour or something?
Gravy lovers - help us non gravy people out please 😂

I only make proper gravy - just meat juices, cornflour and water - I've never used Bisto - Dad banned it in our house.

No wonder posters hate gravy if they’ve only had Bisto! Proper gravy is superb, can’t have a roast without it.

I always used to make my own then had really good gravy at a friend's house and she told me it was bisto. Now I use bisto as a base and add wine, garlic, herbs and meat juices. It's especially good for veggie gravy. You just add some wine and herbs and it tastes very grown up - good with veggie Wellington on Christmas Day for all the veggies and vegans.

Plastictreees · 15/09/2025 18:15

@Cinaferna That sounds lovely. I find Bisto on its own a bit tasteless and salty.

CalzoneOnLegs · 15/09/2025 18:18

@Cinaferna blob of cranberry sauce is nice too

Chicken and bacon burger - mixing two meats biting into together just isn't for me!

Fois Gras/Lobster/caviar - foods all for show.

Anything with kidney, liver etc in.

Really laughed at this. Either my boss only last week and he was telling me his good horror is bacon on a burger OR two meats on the same plate. I thought both of these were super weird, then you also have the bacon comment.

Lobster and Fois Gras though - yum!!

I did say prepared correctly.

It needs to be peeled - takes a few seconds with a potato peeler.

I've never heard of it being peeled!

PloddingAlong21 · 15/09/2025 18:53

This whole thread is great - it’s people descriptions of the food they don’t like.

For me….

egg white - during some health kick I got into my head egg white omelettes with broccoli were great. Literally turned my stomach, yet I persevered and tried to hide it in hot sauce. Never could make it work. No tiny yellow yolk is calorific or bad enough to need to take it out.

wobbly fat on meat - cook the meat, slow cook, render it, cut it off, but for the love of god why would anyone want to eat wobbly fat?!

cheap sausages - I didn’t eat them until older as the idea of smushed up crap meat shoved in a sack made me gag. I only eat sausages from the butchers now. It isn’t about being snobby, but walls paste is vile.

I don't like roast dinners full stop. Gravy or no gravy.
😂

I don't like cheap sausages - as mentioned by an earlier poster.
DH bought a sausage machine.

We spent a lot of time making the mix & trying to fill the skins.

We also had a lot of laughs.

We had the most brilliant idea (DH, actually, if I'm being pedantic) "why don't we just fry the porky mix as burgers".
I've never bought sausages since.

No, it’s a lubricant, chicken, turkey, stuffing etc etc can be a bit dry without it, it also adds flavour as again chicken, turkey, beef can be a bit bland, I wouldn’t eat a roast without it……Christmas dinner without some gravy would be a disaster in my opinion

I never much liked gravy growing up, then started having some decent jus in restaurants, which I absolutely love.

I can kind of step from that to gravy and see the concept, in so far as it adds depth of flavour, but I much a kind of wine driven, clear jus to a dark bovril-y sort of cloudy gravy. I think there is a risk with some gravy that it just makes everything taste of stock granules.

Fair enough 🤣 I never used to like them either, but started to enjoy them in my mid twenties. My DH is the cook in our house but a decent roast is the one thing I do well!

Am definitely with you! Revolting!

I love celery, but I'd love it more if someone could grow it so it's not stringy!!!

it's the bees knees with cream cheese or peanut butter. Low carb crunch!!

Olives. Nearly everyone says they didn't like them the first time – so why carry on??

I used to hate olives but then I had Perello Gordal Picante olives - wow -only olives I eat but gorgeous

CalzoneOnLegs · 15/09/2025 20:54

@BeaLola kalamata are my fave olives but I will try those 🫒

I think I only like cheap sausages - I hate the fancy kind with additions. No need to- loads of fat that makes a good sausage (I bought s sausage machine too😩)

Have you tried the Waitrose ‘wild’ cranberry sauce? Now I’m not gullible enough to imagine happy foragers gathering wild cranberries, however it is very nice, not sweet and it’s perfect with a Melted Camembert or brie. 🐷

@the5thgoldengirl yes that appetising black ‘shit line’ on the prawn 🤮 I do not get the love of crabs either, they are even worse such scavengers, they literally will eat anything dead on the seabed, we need these things to keep keep things clean though, but it’s beyond me how they are considered edible 🤮🤮
