Food you don't understand

Crumbed ham.

I don't get it.
What does the crumb bring?
It can't be textural as it's usually soggy.
Can any crumbed ham aficionados please enlighten me?

Are there other food mysteries you'd like clearing up?

Anything that is an ‘organ’, so
liver, lungs, spleen, sweetbreads, kidneys, heart.

@FartNRoses oh I know, it's just offal isn't it ( 😂sorry, family joke. I'll get my coat...)

It’s totally offal 😝😝😝
And what an offal joke. Ha ha, boom boom 😄😄

Lettuce. What is the point, esp the traditional round lettuce.

That’s the best lettuce!

Soft, not scratchy, just a hint of bitterness (radicchio is very bitter - a little goes a long way), green and luscious.

i crave this kind of lettuce but for various reasons we end up with cold, watery, tasteless iceberg or scratchy frisée- or rocket, which I like but I want a soft lettuce!

My ex mother in law often did belly pork on a Sunday.
I'm pretty sure that went a long way to me turning vegetarian.

Ruddy papayas…

Just discovered what I thought was a mango ( shopping without my glasses) is actually a papaya. I’m pretty catholic in my food tastes but I can’t cope with this insipid, watery, nauseating fruit. It literally makes me retch.

Mangos though…zingy, tangy, sweet, soft, smooth, unctuous….❤️

Result!! Shame to waste them.

Oh I ate them ALL 😋

BlackSwan · 12/09/2025 18:01

Razor clams.

Can't bear to see them on display at the seafood counter.

Who eats them? Who??

I yearn for a seafood/fish shop near me so I can buy them.
Even my local supermarkets have axed their counters.

Mokel · 12/09/2025 18:04

Camomile tea. It smells like cat wee. Used to work at a place where about 8 colleagues drank this and the break room stank of camomile tea. Then a lady started working and drank fennel tea! That is awful

I'm wincing.

Olives. Nearly everyone says they didn't like them the first time – so why carry on??

Because that’s how your taste buds adapt. Also they say your taste adapts as you age. I didn’t like coffee, wine or olives at first. Now they are my favourites! And I’m less fussed by dessert which I used to love.

That's reminded me , I had mussels in a restaurant once and one was absolutely huge, and obscenely anatomical. I could barely eat for laughing.

Luckily all the others in my life have been normal sized as I love them.

Probably your food market might sell this.

Supermarkets dropped the counters as got very little money for the floor space. My friend works at a supermarket that takes £500k on a normal week and they took just £4.5k from the deli counter before covid. It was closed and never reopened.

I thought this until recently DH got a rotisserie attachment for the bbq. I had had a really long day and my heart sank when he said hedgotpork belly for dinner but I was quite mind blown how nice it was, and not seeming like 95% fat like any other pork belly

Fat is delicious by most standards. Crispy bacon, the fat on the edge of a lamb chop, well marbled steak, chicken skin. Bless the air fryer that makes it all taste even better.

I don't get the weird processed hams though.
Chicken livers and hearts are absolutely delicious. Massive bovine or pigs livers are vom. Chewy with tubes.

Vitriolinsanity · 12/09/2025 18:11

Watermelon and cucumbers.

Pasta. I just don’t get the love unless one is actually in Italy.

Me. I can't cook them, they are a bit beyond my skills; but at a decent restaurant they can be wonderful.

CoffeeCantata · 12/09/2025 18:12

Black pudding is absolutely delicious. But it’s made of a bucket of pig’s blood, lumps of lard and bread (with spices and seasonings).

I remember it from childhood and I loved it until I learned how it was made.

Illogical to reject some bits of an animal and eat others, but I can’t face it now.

Clockface222 · 12/09/2025 18:13

Most shop bought cakes and biscuits, they generally have a really weird concoction of ingredients and don't even taste edible to me.

Charlize43 · 12/09/2025 18:13

MacDonalds & Fast Food. Why do people eat such greasy crap? The smell - It really turns my stomach when people bring it onto the trains.

viques · 12/09/2025 18:13

Lurkingandlearning · 12/09/2025 11:40

Globe artichokes. So much work for so little that’s edible.

But lovely when someone else has done all the work and put the hearts in a jar! Thankyou to the artichoke wranglers, the world values your work.

I daresay, even in Italy, pasta is slimy and vile.

It's nasty.

People should only have Yorkshire puddings - hate people calling them yorkies, with roast beef. Plus needs to be homemade. Not Aunt Bessie’s rubbish. Ideally the YP needs to be cooked in a square or rectangular pan. Then divide it into the number of people having it

No roast dinner esp Christmas dinner should have anything made by Aunt Bessie’s gracing the plate.

100%

xanthomelana · 12/09/2025 12:17

Controversial but I don’t get the hype about Yorkshire puddings. They don’t actually taste of anything and go soggy. I’m off to hide now because I know people love them 😂

Abomination!
