Food you don't understand

Crumbed ham.

I don't get it.
What does the crumb bring?
It can't be textural as it's usually soggy.
Can any crumbed ham aficionados please enlighten me?

Are there other food mysteries you'd like clearing up?

I recently heard a much ruder description of hand pulled pork, not sure I can ever eat it again!

I don't like pulled pork much & now that's put me right off it, visions of wanky men.

Olives. Nearly everyone says they didn't like them the first time – so why carry on??

I hated olives for years. But I saw how much my mum loved them, and how she could gobble down half a jar full in 20 minutes and assumed there must be something in it. So every time she had them, I'd have one just in case. And the one day, in a restaurant in Illinois, I had one and it was DELICIOUS and from that moment I was converted. It wasn't a case of teaching myself to tolerate them, one day they were revolting, one day they were gorgeous. Very odd

Here goes - so many of those already mentioned, but -
Olives
Avocados
Eggs - ugh - but OK cooked in dishes
Pasta - hate the horrible slimy stuff!
Anything with chili in it or hot spices
Macaroni cheese
Cod - reason being my grandma used to tell me stories about their habits and how they are fished and prepared, put me right off!
Kebabs
Pizza - don't see the point in eating a hard pastry crust with random ingredients on top.
Sushi

This is literally a list of all the things I love 😀 particularly pizza.

I don't like baked beans. They are just odd to me.

I also don't like fruity teas/most flavoured teas, it's all just warm sweet flavoured water. I'm not a big tea person though,I can only just about stomach a regular builders' tea if visiting an elderly relative and wanting to appear polite.

@Bluebay finally someone who agrees that passion fruit smells gross. I think it smells like body odour and it really makes me 🤢

CherryRipe1 · 12/09/2025 17:42

Tinned mixed fruit cocktail. Foul. Everything is mushy and tastes the same and it smells weird. Ditto Russian salad, think that's what it's called, a horrible gloop of potatoes, peas, carrots in some creamy dressing. Terrible.

Kreepture · 12/09/2025 17:43

I don't understand Sprouts, Olives, Celery, or Sushi.

But i'm not going to call them names unlike some.

SafeSex · 12/09/2025 17:44

Matcha, tinned water chestnuts, slimy ham, mild Cheddar, mint, coriander, Domino's pizzas, chorizo, marmalade, fruit cake.

I couldn't agree more about Percy Pigs.
I worked (very briefly) at M&S years ago. Everyone raved about Percy Pigs so l bought some.
I ate one, thought l'd got a bad batch, they were so disgusting. Asked people in the staff room to try them, they all loved them.

I believe it is called educating one's palate!😂

ThreePears · 12/09/2025 17:45

Lobster. How anyone can eat a lobster is beyond me.

They go into a restaurant, peer into a large tank of living creatures that are staring back at you, and go: "Yep. That's the one I want to eat - please take it out of that tank of cold water and go and sling it in a large pan of boiling water, where it will scream its last and boil to death, and then I will pick it apart with my fingers and gobble it up. I am prepared to pay handsomely for this delicacy".

ChippySauce · 12/09/2025 17:46

I think the original Percy Pigs have changed.
I used to like them but not anymore.

Deep fried food . Just not nice, to me anyway.
Doughnuts ( see above). I know not liking doughnuts is controversial. People buy them in the office and can't believe that someone could not want one.
I don't like meat at all , but am particularly puzzled by raw meat ( steak tartare) and offal. Just why .....
Am with other people on oysters. Prawns and shellfish generally.

Why people eat dead bodies? I’ll never understand it.

Cannibalism? Where have you witnessed this? That's slightly trumped okra.

Catterbat · 12/09/2025 17:48

murasaki · 12/09/2025 14:37

Talking of mozzarella, which to me is fine, burrata. A soggier more expensive version of mozzarella. There's no need.

I was going to say burrata. I love cheese but burrata is not cheese. It’s a rank, sopping, tasteless ball of shite. I especially hate it when they plonk a whole one, cold, in the middle of your pizza. Makes me furious.

May I also add the following:

Bubble tea (wtf)
mortadella (expensive spam)
Scallops (marshmallowy deeply wrong fish with evil orange dangles)
Cranberry sauce (jam on meat)
Burgers with loads of weird crap like waffles or bolognese or pulled pork or whatever on (Can’t I just have a slice of cheese ffs?)

Tinned water chestnuts are vile. The texture...ugh. like that time you accidentally bit into a polystyrene cup. They make my teeth itch.

If you were put off cod by that try this for skate.

My friend had mates who were trawlermen. Apparently the skate is the fish that most resembles part of a female anatomy re texture. And they're offshore for a while...

Never ordered skate again after that.

Edited

I am asking this in a small, weak voice: "They wouldn't have sent the "used ones" to market ...surely?"

They are delicious and a healthy snack. Even our 4 year olds love them.

Agree. I thought there were rather a lot of fussy, squeamish people on this thread whom it would be a bore to invite for dinner but that stands its ground as an entry.😕

I was too busy nearly vomming in the pub beer Garden bin to clear that one up, sorry.

Not a risk I'll take.

Globe artichokes. So much work for so little that’s edible.

Yes. They aren't unpleasant but you'd be better off just having the hearts.

Pomegranate. Tastes nice enough but the pips are massive bitter and crunchy - like failed popcorn kernels. How did they become a thing?

I think that is true for coffee as well. Must be a cultural thing, I made myself like olives by eating 10 in a row because we travel to Greece at lot and I felt left out when everyone else was eating them in the tavernas. I am glad I did because I love them now!

katseyes7 · 12/09/2025 17:53

I bought sweet potatoes once.
Did them in the slow cooker. Never got as far as eating them, the smell had me heaving. They went straight in the bin.

I think its because they look so pretty scattered over things.
I agree the crunch isn't their best feature but the jammy flesh is tasty.

WonderingWanda · 12/09/2025 17:54

Fried bread for me, utterly revolting.
And crackling. And fried eggs. Not really a fan of grease to be honest.....well apart from buttered toast!
