Food you don't understand

Crumbed ham.

I don't get it.
What does the crumb bring?
It can't be textural as it's usually soggy.
Can any crumbed ham aficionados please enlighten me?

Are there other food mysteries you'd like clearing up?

Any dessert called Death by Chocolate or other piles of sticky sugary goo that people describe as "to die for"

Anything that is an ‘organ’, so
liver, lungs, spleen, sweetbreads, kidneys, heart.

@FartNRoses oh I know, it's just offal isn't it ( 😂sorry, family joke. I'll get my coat...)

My mum used to make lamb’s heart casserole - we got one each. It was tasty enough, though definitely not her nicest meal - but it was quite fun dissecting dinner! I once found a piece of cardboard stapled to my heart.

I'm not very keen on watermelon - it doesn't taste of very much, it's like crunchy water. I accept that maybe the watermelons we get in this country may not be the most flavourful as they've presumably been picked early to last for travel. It looks so pretty but it's disappointing.

Noo, if you buy pre packed Watermelon (I know Iknow!) make sure the flesh is a deep pink colour rather than pale, it is SO tasty, pale pink watermelon is tasteless

@Greysowhat - I really don’t enjoy hot chocolate-y desserts - things like chocolate lava cakes. I love chocolate, but not hot and melty. Sometimes a chocolate cake can be too chocolate-y.

JudgeJ · 12/09/2025 17:08

Arancini, sorry Montelbano, tried them in Sicily near your house and they were horrible, even tried them in another place for fairness but still horrible.
I can't stand yoghurt and I'm so old that I first tried it in the 1960s, Ski yoghurts, but can't get to like it. Someone once told me that Greek yoghurt was nicer and I did manage to eat tzatziki but any other form I can't eat.

LittleBitofBread · 12/09/2025 17:09

Calliopespa · 12/09/2025 16:42

Have you roasted them in maple syrup and olive oil till golden?

Listen, I've tried it all. I cannot get away from that greasy flavour.

Parma violets - utterly vile. Couldn't eat them as a child.
I also remember tinned pears - nasty gritty things.
I love shellfish but have never felt brave enough to try an oyster.
Agree with the poster who mentioned margarine. I'd rather have no butter than fake butter.
Apart from that, I eat anything!

I used to live Parma violets as a child but not now.
The gritty tase of tinned pears was always odd, never buy tinned fruit now.

Bonbon249 · 12/09/2025 17:11

Completely agree with others oysters, olives, celery and avocado are just nasty. I'll add another - sushi -raw fish , why would you do that to yourself? At least have the decency to batter it and deep fry it! Before anyone asks, yes, I am Scottish and no, I don't like deep fried Mars Bars!

PistachioTiramisu · 12/09/2025 17:11

Here goes - so many of those already mentioned, but -
Olives
Avocados
Eggs - ugh - but OK cooked in dishes
Pasta - hate the horrible slimy stuff!
Anything with chili in it or hot spices
Macaroni cheese
Cod - reason being my grandma used to tell me stories about their habits and how they are fished and prepared, put me right off!
Kebabs
Pizza - don't see the point in eating a hard pastry crust with random ingredients on top.
Sushi

Needmorelego · 12/09/2025 17:13

@JudgeJ I love Parma Violets.
I put the mini packs of them in-between the layers of pass the parcel at my daughter's birthday party when she was about 6.
The kids were all "what on earth are these?" They were not impressed (after trying them - bless em) and gave them back to me.
I had put some in the party bags too and they all took them out and left them behind 😂😂😂

pokewoman · 12/09/2025 17:14

Hairy water sticks (celery)
Octopus or squid

Other than that I'll eat pretty much anything

Try Lidl real Greek full fat yoghurt. Food of the gods…

pokewoman · 12/09/2025 17:15

Oh ..I'll add those parma violet sweets to the list and liquorice as well

JudgeJ · 12/09/2025 17:16

CherryRipe1 · 12/09/2025 16:58

I spat out my tea laughing at that! 🤣 😂😅

I recently heard a much ruder description of hand pulled pork, not sure I can ever eat it again!

TheHappyBiscuitB · 12/09/2025 17:16

There’s quite a lot of things I really dislike and don’t eat.
The first things that come to my mind are avocados. Everything about them is revolting. The taste, the texture, bleugh. Absolutely no.

Also anything with ginger - the smell alone is horrible! I don’t care how good and healthy it is I will never drink any drink with ginger in it, the taste is vomit inducing.

Result!! Shame to waste them.

Am definitely with you! Revolting!

Celery needs to be peeled.

It is a great relief for us both that we don't live together!

BadgesforBadgers · 12/09/2025 17:22

Pulled Pork.

You think I don't know that you are using every shitty, fatty bit of Pork that would normally get thrown away?

One of the most upsetting things that has happened to me food wise is buying a roast pork sandwich and finding the pork ' pulled' .

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 12/09/2025 17:24

I'll eat a lot of things that others won't.
Brains, sweetbreads & other offal,
I've tried frogs' legs & chicken feet, indifferent to both.

I did try fried crickets, & had black bits sticking out between my teeth, so I won't bother again.

If you were put off cod by that try this for skate.

My friend had mates who were trawlermen. Apparently the skate is the fish that most resembles part of a female anatomy re texture. And they're offshore for a while...

Never ordered skate again after that.

Brussels sprouts. Food of the devil.

I have to agree 😬

ResusciAnnie · 12/09/2025 17:28

Eurgh my mum always has crumbed ham in the fridge. Yeuch. Why was that even invented in the first place?? Hideous.

BunnyLake · 12/09/2025 17:28

murasaki · 12/09/2025 10:59

Celery. Stringy green water with an unpleasant taste. Just why?? It's not food.

It can help with acid reflux. I have a chew on it if I haven’t any Rennie.

ExquisiteSocialSkills · 12/09/2025 17:30

Massive flabby deep pan pizzas with horrible weird sauces and toppings.

Extruded corn snacks eg Wotsits, Monster Munch. Possible exception is Quavers.
