The last thread was taken down because of personal insults towards the man.

We should be able to have a thread about this news topic.

Report any insulting posts. Mumsnet can you please just delete the offending posts, instead of deleting the whole thread?

Thank you.

Charlie Kirk has died today. He was shot at a public talk that he was giving.

No. Every death is a tragedy

Not according to him. “It is worth it. It is worth to have a cost of, unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year so we can have the second amendment”.

No one should be shot for their views, obviously.

Gymrabbit · 10/09/2025 23:53

I had recently been watching a lot of his videos. He was always polite and respectful and allowed opposing views to be heard. He was also well informed on a lot of issues. The only things I think I disagreed with him on were abortion and gun control.

I didn’t see the previous mumsnet thread but have seen a lot of people on fb celebrating his death or commenting with yawns/what am I having for dinner? Type comments. These people think they are oh so much kinder and more tolerant than someone like Kirk. People celebrating the death of a young dad because he had different views to them are are human excrement in my opinion.

I’m starting to think the only way out of this mess is for it all to come to a head. The simmering boiling pot of US politics is really holding the country back, it needs confronting head on, the sooner the better…only then will real progress be made to bridge the divide. So much anger and hate needs alleviating.

Nope. IMHO what America and the UK need is more prosperity and less stress for the common people. People don't get half so angry when they have fewer worries.

Chickenbone123 · 10/09/2025 23:53

I can’t believe a previous thread was deleted!!! Seriously. MN needs to ban everyone in that post who was saying things warranting deletion. I don’t believe British women would speak badly on a dead American politician. So who are they? And Why?!

What? It’s not an either/or situation, there isn’t a predetermined requirement for someone to be shot to death today and the choice is ‘man with opinions some people don’t like’ or ‘bus full of innocent children’.

No-one should have been shot.

Swallowdoubleandrunamile · 10/09/2025 23:53

I found most of his views abhorrent. That he has been executed for them, is sickening, to me.
A dark day for humanity.

Sid9nie · 10/09/2025 23:41

Awful. I don't understand the resistance to gun control.

Because the flawed logic is that everyone is willing to give up their gun ownership provided everyone else does it first.

Enough4me · 10/09/2025 23:54

No one should be silenced for saying their opinion. He was open to debate and his murderer had no courage to challenge him.
It must be so hard for his family to even start to take this in.

I know he said that. I disagree with him on that. He didn't think that every death was a tragedy. But I do.

I'm bemused by posters think he added anything positive to public debate.

My only hope is that he does not become some kind of martyr.

Every death is not a tragedy, unless you want to debase the meaning of the word.
This death was rather obviously ironic.
And the MNHQ censorship has been frankly weird. Having ‘two young children’ shouldn’t put someone beyond criticism.

Agree. No-one should be above criticism, but there’s criticism in a rational way, but also showing empathy that someone has lost their life, and then there’s nastiness where someone practically gloats that someone has lost their life, which was happening on the other thread. Seriously, what’s wrong with people?!

Well, Mangione was left wing..There are US Dems who agree w guns.

They Say it was an older man.

In my opinion, he is still entitled to his opinion

He was religious too which influenced his way of thinking.

I have a Catholic friend and she is very anti abortion. I havent fallen out with her over it

Having an opinion is fine.

Trying to force that opinion on women and girls to the point you attempt to influence policy change, especially when you will never experience pregnancy and giving birth isn't fine.

This instance might make people think a bit more

It’s freedom of speech, not freedom from consequences.

As someone who is on record stating gun related deaths are worth it to retain the 2nd amendment, I’m sure Charlie would be ok with the manner of his death.

He did make odd comments about women too. Saying women over 30 were past their prime, tho he married his wife when she was 32!

And saying a 10 yo rape victim hypothetically should not be allowed abortion was.....

And most on FB didn't even know who he was until today, but just joined the pile on on the back of their very little knowledge of him.

This quote doesn’t mean that he didn’t think the gun deaths were a tragedy. He can have found them tragic, whilst also believing this to be a necessary consequence of the right to bear arms.

I never understood the American gun culture until I spent some time living in the states. They have school book bags with bullet proof plates that they buy for their children. Can you imagine living in a place where that’s normal???? Many believe the way to solve the school shootings is to arm teachers. I believe that as a nation, they have all been brought up and lived in an environment where a gun is your only hope. Changing the gun laws would likely only mean the law abiding citizens are now unarmed and therefore feel more vulnerable. Their gun is their safety blanket. Of course, I don’t agree with the gun laws in the states, but I can see what has caused people to feel the way they do.

He was a dad of 2 kids, his kids were there. NO ONE should forget this, no matter what else they think.

Do you that he forced his opinion on women though?

Any talks that i saw that he had with women about abortion, the women were always standing up to him very strongly about abortion. They were arguing back with him

Anyone celebrating the murder of another human being is despicable, regardless of what they felt about the opinions that person held.

I didn’t agree with much that Charlie Kirk said, although I did agree with some, but every video I’ve ever seen of him speaking and debating has been conducted in a way that allowed for open dialogue on both sides.

His poor family must be in such pain and his daughters are so young they’ll never get the opportunity to really know their Dad. That’s devastating and anyone who can’t see how sad it is and feel empathy for all concerned, is a deeply unpleasant person.

Agreed with all you said and there are some deeply unpleasant people around.
Again I would say it is the loony left cult.

I highly doubt it.

If 20+ 6 year olds getting gunned down at primary school several years ago now can't make people think more, nothing will.

It's just thoughts as prayers as always until the next time with no change.
