The last thread was taken down because of personal insults towards the man.

We should be able to have a thread about this news topic.

Report any insulting posts. Mumsnet can you please just delete the offending posts, instead of deleting the whole thread?

Thank you.

Charlie Kirk has died today. He was shot at a public talk that he was giving.

You are not denying that your message is ‘serves him right’
You are revolting.

You're determined to see something that isn't there.

I’ve felt this for a long time, but now I know it deep down in my bones as a right-leaning person: the left hates us and wants us dead.
They don’t want to debate us, they aren’t interested in the marketplace of ideas.

They think it’s funny too.

The right in the white settler shitstain entity that is america censor history being taught in schools. That's why americans are so patriotic, they aren't taught actual history and how disgusting that white settler enity is. The fella who was killed today was all for censoring history and teaching, quote, "patriotic history", ie. WHITEWASHED "history".

"The findings indicate that in 16 Republican-dominated states, policies have been enacted to restrict the teaching of critical perspectives on race, sexuality, and other controversial subjects and to perpetuate a positive view of U.S. history.

Since 2021, nearly one-third of states have banned K-12 school curricula that offer critical views of the racial past of the U.S., with some of these laws explicitly mentioning critical race theory (CRT) or specific materials like the 1619 Project. Legislatures in 40 states have introduced over 200 bills that would restrict curricula, and some of these laws would penalize teachers for teaching certain ‘divisive concepts’ (e.g., topics related to race, gender, diversity, oppression, and/or sexuality).

The study found that 16 states – in which Republican politicians control the government – are using their formal authority to remove critical perspectives in schools. Relatedly, these states are actively seeking to prevent or dissuade schools/students from engaging in critical thought, in large part by encouraging or requiring them to steer clear of content that might be sensitive or controversial.

Censorship of Critical Perspectives in American Schools: : Policy Briefs: Education Policy: Center for Evaluation and Education Policy: School of Education: Indiana University Bloomington

A recent study examined what and whose knowledge is being restricted in U.S. K-12 schools, and how and why this is happening. The findings indicate that in 16 Republican-dominated states, policies have been enacted to restrict the teaching of critical...

I would guess it’s certainly a deterrent for someone intending to break into someone’s home if the owner is likely to have a gun. Here in the UK we’re like sitting ducks. Unable to defend ourselves if the defence involves using excessive force against someone not armed. Not that we even know if they’re armed or not. I’m not advocating for gun ownership over here but I can see why people who have been used to having them as a form of protection would be reluctant to give them up.

I was reading the SAS man Chris Ryan recently. He says that most people who shoot intruders are not convicted, esp if female, bc of the threat. It's not true we are sitting ducks just bc wr don't have US style gun laws, it's not that black and white.

How about "Preaching hate and division is going to have consequences and sometimes that comes back on you regardless of if you're liberal, right wing, right leaning or anything."

Can you give citations for when he preached hate and division?

You’re entitled to hold that opinion. But to gloat and celebrate someone’s death, as some did on the other other thread is abhorrent, and not okay.

Debate and free speech I was raised to believe by my father are very important. I still believe that. I feel I'm in the minority these days.

I don't agree with what he said, but I dont hate him for it.

He really didn't agree with abortion, and that was his opinion

Or women taking contraception and therefore taking control of their own sex lives and reproductive choices?

It wasn't that he didn't agree with abortion, he spoke specifically about how he believed a rape victim should have to carry and give birth to the baby who is a product of that rape.

That isn't making the world safer for women and girls. It's dangerous and regressive.

Men having the power to make decisions about the bodies of rape victims (including children) is what makes me sad, angry, and scared.

Awful. I don't understand the resistance to gun control.

It dates back to the 'militia' in their sacred Consuitution & the West frontier culture too.

There are advantages to NOT having a written constitution..

AngelicKaty · 11/09/2025 00:17

Of course, by why about Charlie Kirk specifically? You say that you think all deaths are a tragedy, but 30,000+ US citizens are murdered with guns EVERY SINGLE YEAR so why have you never started a thread about it before? Why is the shooting of this US citizen any more or less heinous than the murder of any other US citizen?

3 teenagers are currently all in critical condition after a shooting at a high school in Colorado which happened at a similar time to Charlie Kirk getting shot.

I don’t recall him preaching hate and division. Unless by that you define any opinion you don’t like as “hate”, and you think that anyone who disagrees with you should face “consequences”.

If more people took the time to listen to and debate with people who don’t agree with them, we’d have a lot less hate and division,

Since critical race theory is a load of shit, it’s not surprising.

I was expecting to read that the Republicans had banned teaching about real racism like The trail of tears, Japanese Internment Camps or Jim Crow not a load of liberal arts bolllocks.

We’re like sitting ducks not just because of lack of protection of a weapon, but also due to lack of protection from the police who now class searching social media for hate speech more important than attending someone’s home following traumatic criminal activity.

For someone who tries to come across as a big softie, leftie-liberal idealist you're being cold-hearted, smug, and self-righteous today about Charlie Kirk's death. Catch yourself on and think of the man's wife and children having to live without him and having to see his murder.

I saw enough of that sort of horror during the Troubles and I don't wish it on anyone else, not even my worst enemy. I have nothing but sympathy for his relatives and friends who are grieving his death.

You think I try to come across as a big softie... ...idealist? You clearly haven't read many of my posts.

I did not wish death on Charlie Kirk, I did not facilitate his death, I don't not support his killer. Nor do I think his death is a tragedy. Ironic, yes. Tragic, no.

In English we had debating lessons and a competition once a year. I wonder if it's still taught in schools.

Most religious people who are anti abortion do support rape exemptions

Do you believe that '10yo rape victims should not be allowed an abortion' is NOT a radical viewpoint?

If that's really true about the US,I thank God I was born in Britain.

But a lot of people don’t believe in abortions under any circumstances.

Listing the worst of the worst circumstances out, won’t make those people change their opinions.

It’s not a view I share, but it isn’t unusual. I don’t even think Catholicism permits abortions in cases of rape.

This is so deranged it’s impossible to deal with it

Charlie Kirk had some views you don’t like. Views. Opinions. Discussions, just words.
He literally created space to talk about topics with people with any view at all, he was the opposite of divisive. He talked to real people, and it got him killed by an equally deranged person who can’t tolerate a different opinion.

I think the pill is overall bad for women too, do I deserve to be shot?
I also think it’s best to have children before you are 30, wanna shoot me?
You are so ridiculous

TheJoyOfWriting · 11/09/2025 00:26

Booneymil · 10/09/2025 23:52

In my opinion, he is still entitled to his opinion

He was religious too which influenced his way of thinking.

I have a Catholic friend and she is very anti abortion. I havent fallen out with her over it

Ofc he was entitled to it. I criticise it strongly, I didn't want to stop him saying it.

Does your Catholic friend think even child rape victims should not be allowed abortion?

You shouldn't fall out w her though. Dialogue is crucial.

Most religious anti abortionists still support rape exemptions. Kirk's views were extreme by their standards.

Can you give citations for when he preached hate and division?

“It drives the left nuts when you say this, that all men are created equal in the eyes of God, all men and women, but not all cultures are created equal,” Kirk said.

Then there was his remark about Ilhan Omar who is a Muslim lawmaker when he said "“She should be deported,” Kirk said. “She hates the country. She’s a terrorist sympathizer.”

Kirk called George Floyd, the Black man whose 2020 murder at the hands of Minneapolis police sparked protests that roiled Trump’s last full year in office, a “scumbag.”

“We made a huge mistake when we passed the Civil Rights Act in the 1960s,” Kirk said during a political convention called America Fest in 2023. Kirk referred to King Jr. as “awful.”

Shall I continue?

How dare we love and support our own country and people, is what you’re saying?

When I hear that you don’t think my country is legitimate, I start to get the message that you don’t think I should exist either.

You think we are an ideological stain. You show it all the time. You want us gone and erased from history.
