The last thread was taken down because of personal insults towards the man.

We should be able to have a thread about this news topic.

Report any insulting posts. Mumsnet can you please just delete the offending posts, instead of deleting the whole thread?

Thank you.

Charlie Kirk has died today. He was shot at a public talk that he was giving.

How is anyone safer with more guns and less restrictions?

That's what this guy advocated for. The irony is he was killed by the very thing he was such a huge proponent for.

It's terrible what happened to him but let's not pretend he was a saint or even just a 'normal family guy'.

Indeed. He was a rabble-rousing right-winger who advocated for more guns, less gun control, and was running the US equivalent of the Hitler Youth.

Serpentstooth · 11/09/2025 06:57

Underthinker · 11/09/2025 06:51

It's what he did. If he wasn't there, these angry societal rifts on gun control, abortion, trans rights etc would still exist, but Kirk at least demonstrated that you can have a civil debate with people with polar opposite views.

And now the reverse has been demonstrated.

BIossomtoes · 11/09/2025 06:57

Kirk said "I can't stand the word empathy, actually. I think empathy is a made up new age term that does a lot of damage."

Enough said.

Do you really thing that everyone on the left is non-violent?

Who is laughing at car crash victims or gun murder victims? Are you able to maintain any sense of proportion on this thread, or are you going to continue accusing people of posting things they haven't, or believing things they don't?

Numerous people have posted comments that gleefully respond to the murder of this man one that sticks on my mind is someone saying “jolly good”

FairLimeFish · 11/09/2025 06:59

MyHeartyCoralSnail · 11/09/2025 06:52

Actually. Don’t do that. Asking people to “google it” is a well known tactic of the far left to affect algorithms and complex language model AI, increasing the number of google searches on specific terms will create a false narrative.

In your drooling, swivel-eyed world you really do see the "radical left" everywhere, don't you?

I'm not convinced @FirstCuppa does, in fact, think at all...

an illegal immigrant raped a 10-year-old (the daughter of his live-in girlfriend) and her shitty mother tried to quietly get her an abortion to protect her POS pedo boyfriend.

I’ve put it right for you an illegal immigrant raped a 10-year-old (the daughter of his live-in girlfriend) and her mother tried to quietly get her an abortion to minimise the damage to her very young daughter.

Edited

She failed to report him. She pushed for a plea deal. She defended him to the media. She’s a vile POS.

Yes many people who are law abiding citizens feel safer because they have guns in the home and keep them securely locked up.

Newsenmum · 11/09/2025 07:01

He seemed very much a ‘family man’ who loved his wife and children.

Bansheed · 11/09/2025 07:01

RingoJuice · 11/09/2025 00:01

I’ve felt this for a long time, but now I know it deep down in my bones as a right-leaning person: the left hates us and wants us dead.
They don’t want to debate us, they aren’t interested in the marketplace of ideas.

They think it’s funny too.

This manipulative statement of self pity and projection is one of the worst things I have read on this thread.

There is polarisation and then there is active rhetotic used to incite. (You are in the inciting bracket, if that helps.)

AyeDeadOn · 10/09/2025 23:23

It's so incredibly sad.
My heart goes out to his wife and children.
He did nothing more than say things people didnt like.

That, in the current context, can be more than enough to become the target of someone who disagrees with you.

MyHeartyCoralSnail · 11/09/2025 07:02

Valeriekat · 11/09/2025 06:58

Do you really thing that everyone on the left is non-violent?

They probably do, because the left have been brain washed to think they are absolutely morally right. That philosophy has directly led to the assassination of a young father. And, like it or not, has led to the rise of popularity of the far right.

Sevenamcoffee · 11/09/2025 07:02

GarlicPint · 11/09/2025 06:51

Everybody who keeps up with the world knows the far left and the far right are equally despicable and dangerous. It gets worse - they meet at the extremes, becoming almost indistinguishable. And they are both to be feared.

The proper place for constructive, problem-solving debate is in the middle. The further we drift from the centre ground, the more discussion is silenced by force.

Yes exactly this. Such a horrific event should prompt people to wonder how it came to this. I do not trust any form of extreme or absolutist views, whether left, right or faith based. The US government would appear to be going further and further to the extremes, emphasising divisions and creating a febrile and violent situation. It is a worry for the US and for the rest of us.

I have literally no clue about AI

Allmychickenscometoroost · 11/09/2025 07:02

Booneymil · 10/09/2025 23:59

Do you that he forced his opinion on women though?

Any talks that i saw that he had with women about abortion, the women were always standing up to him very strongly about abortion. They were arguing back with him

You are being disingenuous here. He didn't just debate women who disagreed with him on the abortion issue. He was actively working to influence policy that impacts women negatively. So yes that would be forcing his views on women.

Fargo79 · 11/09/2025 07:03

He made it his life's mission to advocate for some extremely dangerous ideology which directly harms and kills people every day in the USA. He was categorically not a "good man" and his extremism contributed to the political tension that is bubbling away in the US.

On a personal, human level, he was a husband and a father and his family is irreparably damaged now. I'm extremely sorry for their pain. I'm sorry for Charlie that his life was cut short so brutally.

Violence like this has no place in a civilised society.

I agree he has spewed a lot of shit and he is very anti abortion, although he does make some good points. Him being shot does nothing but leave his wife and family alone, makes him a martyr for the cause and more anti left sentiment.

BIossomtoes · 11/09/2025 07:03

localnotail · 11/09/2025 06:54

I cant comment on this particular incident much (other than saying its awful someone was killed like this) as I never heard of this guy before, and looking at the article about him it looks like I wouldn't be interested in his views.

However, it is scary that, gradually, political climate in the US becoming so violent: I think it started with Trump's supporters storming the Capitol, and now there are ICE disappearing people off the street KGB-style and this... US has always been a bit unhinged, all the guns and extreme ideologies, but it seems to be getting worse and I worry where all this will go.

It’s always been violent. It’s 160 years since Lincoln was assassinated, 62 since Kennedy was. It’s a society in which violence is celebrated.

Running the equivalent of the Hitler Youth? For holding conservative views? He is not radical at all.

Do you travel by car? Do you think the freedom to do so should be curtailed because many people die in car related deaths each year? If you die in a car crash should we just shrug and say your acceptance of the pay off between the benefit of having a car against car related deaths means your death should just me accepted?

This is so much bigger than an individual The assassination is an attempt to silence freedom of speech through fear and is an attack on democracy itself.

This argument was already debunked by @Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice

'The motor industry is continuously learning from what has gone wrong and innovating to improve safety. Regulations are frequently reviewed and updated. Look how much safer car travel has become in the last 50 years.
Gun laws are still back in 1791.'

The benefits of car travel are obvious, the benefits of gun ownership much less so. The NRA is against universal background checks when buying guns. It reminds me of the episode of the Simpsons where Homer is trying to buy a gun and is told that he will have to wait a few days. His response was 'but I'm mad now'.

GlitchStitch · 11/09/2025 07:04

That’s a man after attention and quick sound bites, not reasonable discussion.

Yep, I'm not even sure he was a true believer in some of what he said, which almost makes it worse. He was apparently known to be neutral/ secular on gay issues until he saw the opportunities and started quoting Leviticus. A bit like Trump who is widely reported to have been pro-choice until he saw the political benefits of becoming anti abortion.

You must have missed the many deleted posts celebrating the assassination of a man for his beliefs in front of his young children )giving you the benefit the doubt )

JH0404 · 11/09/2025 07:04

Regardless of whether your opinions and political views align with Charlie Kirk ( I don’t know enough about him) it’s just so so sad. Those two little children will have this affecting whole lives. His wife has lost her husband at a time when their family is so young, it’s just terrible.
