If you are tall...

do you mind being asked to get an item off a shelf for someone less vertically advantaged?

Just come back from aldi and a woman visibly tutted when her OH was asked by another lady if he would mind getting a bottle of OJ from the back of the top chiller shelf (all the bottles at the front were taken).
I was by the yoghurts and was paying attention because the juice cabinet was my next stop.
The OH didn't seem to mind at all though, and I've always been happy to get an item for anybody if asked.

I'm tallish (5ft 9) & don't mind and have offered before.

coffeeagogo · 06/09/2025 09:23

I’m 6’1 and get asked quite often by old ladies to get things for them but not before they tell me I am very tall 😂 I don’t mind, I’m happy to help people where I can

Nissii · 06/09/2025 09:24

Not at all, it's something I've often done.

Tiredofwhataboutery · 06/09/2025 09:24

I don’t mind but in Aldi the shop workers stand on the sticky out ledge at base of fridge doors to reload. I’m 5 11 and even I have to hop on to rummage through the giant pots of Greek style yoghurt. There’s always loads of fat free ones but I like it with fat.

Sunnysidegold · 06/09/2025 09:25

I'm 5 foot 9 so tallish and do not mind at all being asked.

IndependentAdjudicator · 06/09/2025 09:26

I'm 5'7 so not as tall as you all, but it's literally a couple of seconds if that, so was surprised she actually tutted out loud😆

Don’t mind at all

CoffeeChocolateWine · 06/09/2025 09:26

This is a pretty standard thing in the life of a tall person. I’m 5ft 10 and get asked this most times I’m in the supermarket. Doesn’t bother me in the slightest…happy to help!

Oatsamazing · 06/09/2025 09:28

I'm 5ft 11 and always happy to help the vertically challenged!

Mrsmunchofmunchington · 06/09/2025 09:28

Not at all. But I do notice that my 5ft 8 isn’t that tall these days.

My stepdaughter and her friends were all taller than me whereas in my youth I was considered really tall for a girl.

CommissarySushi · 06/09/2025 09:35

Doesn't bother me. I'm 6ft tall and have been asked a few times.

Sellenis · 06/09/2025 09:49

I don't mind. I also don't mind putting bags up on the train.

It's really normal.

TheTwenties · 06/09/2025 09:49

No problem at all for either DH or I - it’s a couple of seconds to help someone. A very sad state of affairs when someone takes issue with such a tiny way to assist.

Snorlaxo · 06/09/2025 09:52

I don’t mind at all.
Last time I helped was because someone’s online shopping package was at the far back of the delivery locker and she couldn’t reach. It took seconds and she was grateful.

GermanShepherd74 · 06/09/2025 10:05

I’m tall, and I don’t mind at all when I get asked to pass things in supermarkets. It feels nice to help a short person with something that probably causes a lot of frustration.

I also enjoy reaching up&over to the back of shelves sometimes to get slightly better best before dates. This gives me a little joy which offsets a fraction of the difficulty and extra cost I have when clothes shopping.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 06/09/2025 10:21

I’m 5’ 7” so not especially tall, but I am sometimes asked, and have no objections at all.

KelsCommemorativeSausage · 06/09/2025 10:23

I don't mind at all. I'm 5"9.

TulipsTwoLips · 06/09/2025 10:30

I’m tall and don’t mind. It doesn’t happen that often. People usually feel the need to do a big song and dance about how you are tall and they are short but really just a ‘I’m sorry to ask but I cant reach. Would you be able to pass me a ….. please’ would be fine.

BashfulClam · 06/09/2025 11:11

I’m happy to do it. My mum is just 5’ and has a step in her kitchen as she so short. Me and my brother are tall. I did once hand to ask an even taller person for help as I wanted a freezer it’s from a top shelf but all the front reachable ones were gone. I have net had to ask before.

Bingbangboo · 06/09/2025 11:32

I'm 6ft and get asked fairly regularly. I don't mind at all.

BeMintFatball · 06/09/2025 11:43

I’m tall, never minded being asked to reach something for someone.

But issue here isn’t tall people taking umbrage at polite requests. The problem is the tall person’s partner tut at someone making use of her man. Which is weird but I bet that is the nub of it 😂

THisbackwithavengeance · 06/09/2025 11:47

It’s normal as this thread has established but was the short lady in question a petite teeny tiny who fluttered her eyelashes at the big, strong man and flirtatiously asked him to get her an item off the tall shelf?

I’m guessing that’s why the girlfriend had a beef?

user1471538283 · 06/09/2025 11:47

I hope they don't mind! I'm small and I have a little step at home. I often ask politely and no one has ever said no. My two are tall and are often asked, they don't mind as they think it's sweet (and they are used to doing it for me).

I too bet the issue is that this woman doesn't want anyone near her DH!

She sounds a miserable old bag.
I hope she needs some help one day and everyone refuses.

noblegiraffe · 06/09/2025 12:29

Nope, and if I take something for myself when shopping and notice the only ones left on a higher shelf are near the back I will pull some forward so that shorter people have a chance of reaching them.
