If you are tall...

do you mind being asked to get an item off a shelf for someone less vertically advantaged?

Just come back from aldi and a woman visibly tutted when her OH was asked by another lady if he would mind getting a bottle of OJ from the back of the top chiller shelf (all the bottles at the front were taken).
I was by the yoghurts and was paying attention because the juice cabinet was my next stop.
The OH didn't seem to mind at all though, and I've always been happy to get an item for anybody if asked.

I get asked quite often and have even offered when I see someone struggling. Doesn't bother me being asked. What sort of person would object?

Pyjamatimenow · 06/09/2025 20:08

Don’t mind at all. In fact probably secretly pleased. Don’t know why!

It’s normal as this thread has established but was the short lady in question a petite teeny tiny who fluttered her eyelashes at the big, strong man and flirtatiously asked him to get her an item off the tall shelf?

I’m guessing that’s why the girlfriend had a beef?

Or the gf was just weird

RedRiverShore5 · 06/09/2025 20:13

I'm 5'10 and often get asked,,of course I don't mind reaching stuff.

Framesite · 06/09/2025 20:14

I'm happy to help and will offer if I see someone struggling.

But, you've no idea what made the woman tut, what her DH had been doing beforehand that had made her think "you'll help her" or what else was on her mind.

InfoSecInTheCity · 06/09/2025 20:15

I’ve never minded, and generally try to pull a couple more of whatever the item is to the front of the shelf if possible.

Actually did a swap once where I grabbed something off the top shelf and they grabbed me something I needed from the bottom shelf 😀

IndependentAdjudicator · 06/09/2025 20:17

I never thought about the flirting factor.
Possibly?
As MN is fond of saying - what I saw was just a teeny snapshot of their day so maybe there is "form" (another MN favourite!) but I guess it just never crossed my mind why anyone would be irritated by proxy for doing such a small favour for somebody else.

Well I’m relatively tall (5ft 5) and often offer myself up like I’m 6’2 when I see someone struggling 😂 but more than happy to help and if someone asked DH I honestly wouldn’t give it a second thought…to be honest I’m that zoned in on what I need to get I don’t even know I would notice someone asking him 😂

Marylou62 · 06/09/2025 20:28

Hahahaha.. I've had many a lovely chat with (mostly old) ladies about my 6ft height..I then jokingly ask them to reach for something on the bottom shelf...

BetsyJameson · 06/09/2025 20:33

Not at all, I’m often asked or offer.

MaryGreenhill · 06/09/2025 20:33

Not at all only too glad to help

GSDLOVER · 06/09/2025 20:56

I’m 4’ 6 so have to always ask people for help or stand there for 10 minutes waiting on staff to appear, I also use the little round stools but I am very grateful when somebody helps, it’s really annoying when everything you want is always on the top shelves.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 06/09/2025 20:57

Cries in 5"1 🙈

I have asked tall people a few times for this kind of help

Menonut · 06/09/2025 23:17

So pleased people don’t mind.
Last time I went, I asked a teenage boy who was shopping with his mum. He looked mortified, but she just laughed and said “why do you think I bring him?”
I’ve never thought to ask 6ft husband if he gets asked when I’m not around.

BertieBotts · 06/09/2025 23:22

I'm not tall enough to be asked this but I was once at a hen do for a friend who is fairly short and her now DH is quite tall, the MOH set up a sort of Mr & Mrs quiz thing and one of the questions was "What super power would DW have if she could have any?" and he guessed that she would ask for extendable arms so she could reach high cupboards Grin I thought it was quite sweet.

This is totally a benefit of having sons Grin

My husband is very tall and is asked at least once every time he shops. He doesn’t mind and usually jokes “no problem now can you pass me a jar up from that bottom shelf”

BuildbyNumbere · 07/09/2025 09:03

5” 10 … been asked lots of times and don’t mind.

swingingbytheseat · 07/09/2025 09:04

Happy to help

ObliviousCoalmine · 07/09/2025 09:06

I have to ask this sometimes, I’m 5’1. I always apologise and am very jovial and polite, I hope it doesn’t piss anyone off. I’m more than happy to help someone less able than me so hopefully that’s how the system works.

Edited to add that I ask my daughter’s 6’3 boyfriend to reach things in my own house fairly regularly. He generally laughs and pats me on the head.

Absentosaur · 07/09/2025 09:07

I’m average height I think . 5’6”

I wonder do very short people ever get asked by very tall people, to find something on the lowest shelves?

I think it’s lovely either way, just a harmless helping hand!

When I'm working with small children I do ask them to reach for things on the floor or tucked at the back of low shelves. They quite like my explanation that they're better at it than me. But I would not ask a stranger of any age to do this unless I obviously could not bend.

I have in the past! Especially if the item is pushed right back. No body has ever refused..

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 08/09/2025 08:56

5’8”, I don’t mind at all.

Eenameenadeeka · 08/09/2025 09:37

My husband is very tall, and he's happy to help. He doesn't love it when people tell him he's very tall though (he's noticed) and ask him about basketball 😂
