If you are tall...

do you mind being asked to get an item off a shelf for someone less vertically advantaged?

Just come back from aldi and a woman visibly tutted when her OH was asked by another lady if he would mind getting a bottle of OJ from the back of the top chiller shelf (all the bottles at the front were taken).
I was by the yoghurts and was paying attention because the juice cabinet was my next stop.
The OH didn't seem to mind at all though, and I've always been happy to get an item for anybody if asked.

I'm average height 5'6 and it doesn't bother me at all. I'm the one in Aldi who steps up on the ledge to get the Choc Pots which are always on the top shelf. Several times I've heard 'ooh while you're up there can you reach X for me please'. Takes seconds and helps someone, no problem.

At 4ft 10 Im the one asking and am very grateful for any help

Yourinmyspot · 08/09/2025 11:25

I’m 4ft 11 and appreciate all you tall people reaching things down for me! If I ask someone they always seem happy to do it for me. I did laugh once when an older lady who was no taller than me asked me to reach her something from the bottom of the freezer. I just managed to get it and not fall in.

Imlyingandthatsthetruth · 08/09/2025 12:59

I'm 5' 8 so I'm flattered that anyone thinks I'm tall! So I always say "Well, you could have asked someone taller!"

Just realised what a boring fart I am...

CharlotteFlax · 08/09/2025 13:08

Its fine by me!

The shorties tend to not like it when you ask them to fetch you something from the bottom shelf though...

LoafofSellotape · 08/09/2025 13:12

I'm asked all the time. It's a new thing, I don't think shops used to stock so high years ago.

I'm 5 foot 9 so tallish and do not mind at all being asked.

I'm the same height and I don't mind either.

augustusglupe · 08/09/2025 13:20

I’m 5.9 and I’ve often been asked to reach for something, always by other women. I don’t mind atall.

Ilovepastafortea · 08/09/2025 13:24

I'm the short person who needs to ask for help - I'm only just 5' tall. I've never had anything other than people being helpful and reaching things down for me. It's unfortunate that you had such a bad reaction OP.

Fionasapples · 08/09/2025 13:28

I'm 5'8", happy to help a polite person. However, I have a frozen shoulder and can't reach up with that arm. I was asked to get something from the top shelf last week, I had a basket in my good arm and I can't carry one with my sore arm. I said I'm sorry I can't, I have a frozen shoulder. The woman gave me a dirty look and a loud tut!

I don’t mind at all (5’9). But one time that sticks in my mind is a lady asking me in M&S. I was stood outside the loos, waiting for DS and nowhere near the shelf. When I arrived where her friend was waiting she was absolutely horrified and said I thought you were getting a member of staff! To which she replied well this lady is tall and she was just stood doing nothing. Then they started a debate about if they wanted one or two of the item at which point I just handed over one and moved a few more on to a lower shelf and wandered off to resume waiting for DS. A few minutes later he called me from outside the shop as he’d come out whilst I was away from the doors and he couldn’t find me! I assumed he was just having a 💩

Auburngal · 08/09/2025 14:47

Always get asked as 5ft 8. Especially at my last work. Then when shopping myself.

If I had to reach something at the back of the top shelf, I bring a few more forward as you can’t take the supermarket out of a person!

On the other side of the scale, there was something I wanted but bottom shelf at the back. A lady asked her DGS aged about 9 to grab that item. I asked him could he do the same for me. He got me one without problems

She needs a frozen shoulder herself.
My colleague got a complaint from a customer as she refused to put the large box of cat food pouches (they have 40-48 in them) into her shopping trolley (her own one) as she had a frozen shoulder too. Customer behind her put the cat food away

Fionasapples · 08/09/2025 15:50

@Auburngal
Well that was rotten of the customer. You're right she does need one! A frozen shoulder is really painful!

DoAWheelie · 08/09/2025 15:55

I've been on both sides of it. I'm quite tall and hit my full adult height at 12 so was asked my friends and my mother to pass them things out of reach quite often. I'd also get asked in shops by little old ladies fairly often too.

I started needing a wheelchair aged 24 and suddenly became the one asking for help. I've never had anyone seem annoyed at me for asking, and I was never annoyed by anyone asking me.

anothergrandchild · 08/09/2025 16:22

Thank you tall people! I also offer to get things from lower shelves.

I had a frozen shoulder aged 16. Got it from reaching a tv remote from the coffee table

It's surprising the damage you can do doing ordinary things.

My3loves · 08/09/2025 18:15

I'm tall, 5ft 11. I don't mind at all, I would much rather somebody ask me than them stretching and potentially hurting themselves.
