A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Out of interest, and I know not everyone is a TRIP fan here, but have you listened to their Leading interviews with former Conservative Ministers? Jeremy Hunt was the most recent, but came across very well.

Going back they also interviewed Theresa May and John Major, as well as plenty of others, so they’re worth a listen.

No but I've previously listened to other interviews with ex-ministers.
I always think that once they are out of office they all seem decent, the problem is what they say/do whilst in!

Isn't it funny that the "liberal" left have never had female PM or ethnic minority PM yet the right have? Always makes me laugh. Left are hung up on DEI yet are still lead by white MC men. The right don't get hung up on DEI and have a much more diverse range of leaders. If we take Labour Vs Tories as the comparison.

Andy Burnham on Laura K on BBC1 just now, blaming AR’s treatment due to her being ‘the crime of being a northern working class woman ‘ and ‘something he himself has had to put up with over the years’. I know Andy’s background. He’s from the same part of the north west as me and that is where he has built a strong power base. But he’s educated and not strictly working class like AR. It annoys me when politicians talk down their backgrounds to make themselves appear to have overcome their difficult upbringings, and have been subject to awful snobbery etc. when, in fact. they’ve had the protection of the Labour Trade Union movement

Yes didn’t Andy Burnham go to Cambridge? I do feel some sympathy as I’m from the same town as Angela and have the same accent. I would say when I was younger I definitely met with prejudice and assumptions due to my accent when I moved south from the north. However I was well read and so were my parents so I was well-spoken. Just a strong accent.

I also attended a sink comprehensive school. Going to university and meeting people who’d been to private schools was a massive shock. Very different lifestyles and backgrounds.

The best move Angela ever made in life was to get involved with the Union at Stockport Council.

I think in the event of her losing her seat at the next election a place would probably be found for her at one of the larger unions.

Listening to Badenoch and Farage being interviewed by Kuenssberg this morning, it's easy to see why some people are swayed in favour of a Conservative/Reform coalition: they both talk virtually the same language when discussing immigration.

When Labour loses the next election the question, I suppose, is what would be worse - Prime Minister Farage, blinking and confused by actually taking up residence in No.10 with no real idea of the way forward, or a Con/Reform coalition which might moderate some of Reform's tunnel vision strategies?

I'm not sure Farage will want a coalition will he? At the moment he will surely want to win on his own? Maybe the closer to the election we get that may change. ...very interesting times ahead. I reckon Tories would 100% do a deal

CaveMum · 07/09/2025 10:39

The problem with a Reform/Con coalition is that Nigel will only accept PM, from what I can see.

The main reason why the Lib Dem’s went into coalition with Cameron was because in their discussions with Labour they insisted they only do it if Gordon Brown stepped down, and he refused. I can see a similar attempt by Reform. Of course if the Conservatives have significantly more MPs than Reform it just wouldn’t fly, but if it’s close I can see a lot of deals being done.

Anyone come across Katie Lam, MP for Weald of Kent? She’s only new but George Osborne mentioned her on a recent PC episode and says she was considered a rising star, and possible future leader.

Agreed, the very last thing Farage would want is a deal; he appears egocentric vainglorious, which is why I really worry that Reform might actually win the next election.

Yes, she's fantastic. Have a google, you should be able to find some of her speeches etc. She's very impressive.

Yes.

She has a lot of common sense.

She's calm, composed and can speak in a clear and concise manner.

I like her a lot.

Never heard of her so I'm off to research

TheNuthatch · 07/09/2025 10:54

As for Farage, I'm still clinging onto the idea that he doesn't actually want to be PM.

Also, what Katie Lam maybe lacks in theatrics, she makes up with her methodical approach.

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 07/09/2025 11:02

I think it was Katie Lam who made such a powerful speech about grooming gangs. She can probably take a great deal of credit for forcing the government into its u-turn on the subject - and indirectly seeing off Lucy ‘dog whistle’ Powell.

Lam and others aside, though, it is revolting that decent MPs and others who raised this issue (I’m leaving out the repugnant Robinson and his followers) got labelled racists…and then Labour decided they were in fact right to call for investigation. There ought to be many, many grovelling apologies over this.

Yes she did. It was a very powerful speech. She definitely moved the dial.

It's a standard tactic from the left to throw the words 'racist' or 'bigot' about though, isn't it? Immigration, sex / gender issues etc. If you don't think agree with the left's extreme viewpoint, you're a bigot, end of.

Nobody is racist simply because they're concerned about levels of immigration and who we're allowing into the country. Similarly nobody is a bigot for understanding biology and wanting to preserve women's and children's rights.

And by the same token, I call the left racist and bigoted. They don’t see it though. A huge part of the problem.

Typical pointing out the speck in someone else's eye, and failing to see the plank in your own (might as well go biblical on them!).
