A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

“David Lammy previously claimed that his mother relied on Tax Credits to raise him. Lammy was 31 (years not months) when Tax Credits were introduced.”

He will be a media feeding frenzy I think but may prove a useful foil to Starmer ie deflect attention?

To be fair, I am aware that I probably cut Labour a lot less slack than I do Tories, but there a a handful on MN who just can't see how their reaction would be totally different if AR was a Tory.
There is no way theycwould accept any Tory calling a Labour politician scum either.
No self awareness whatsoever.

This is the big divide, I think.

Labour devotees have to believe that they and their politicians are morally better. It’s a big part of the left’s evangelism. It’s all bollocks, but the left would fall apart without the myth.

The end result is that any Labour wrongdoing has to be excused and Tory misdemeanours have to be wheeled out again and again.

It also means that a ‘virtue gap’ has to be constantly talked up, very often with exaggeration or outright lies.

If you look at the Rayner threads they’re peppered with accusations that Jeremy Hunt did worse than AR about SDLT with his 7 flats. It’s a pack of lies. Even Dan Neidle’s said there was absolutely nothing wrong with Hunt’s purchase.

The really big one is the massive lie about PPE corruption. That will come back to haunt the left one day.

But this loathsome left-wing posturing does raise the inevitability of hypocrisy. Just sticking their fingers in their ears and shouting “LA, LA, LA, can’t hear you” seems to be the left’s answer to that.

twistyizzy · 07/09/2025 08:53

Actually maybe I should support Lammy, he believes in the value of independent and grammar schools!

Sky News are running a story claiming younger voters are increasingly likely to be attracted to Reform than any other political party

I can believe it.

My 17-year-old DS wouldn't vote for Labour if his life depended on it. Although, tbh, he probably wouldn't bother to vote anyway - too much hassle!

OhShesSweetButAPsycho · 07/09/2025 09:01

Get rid of Keir Starmer and bring back Boris Johnson! The country will be jumping from the frying pan into the fire if Farage gets into power.

Surely backbenchers Inc now Rayner will rebel if they do this?
It's exactly what I've said on other threads, where Reform go, Labour follow

Reform are setting the agenda. Military barracks too.

Labour are scrabbling. Still the crossings are high anyway.

And then finally to end on this morning:
Unions really not happy with Labour: "anger at Labour ministers from inside Unite’s ranks was high, she said, bringing the union close to cutting off party funds"

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2025/sep/06/unite-sharon-graham-labour-has-one-year-to-get-it-right-farage-starmer

“….Farage is not the answer, but he is a good communicator. And whether we like it or not, when he is talking about net zero, and about what’s happened to communities and workers, people are hearing what Labour used to say.”

She said that, with high inflation already taking a toll on household budgets, mooted tax rises in Rachel Reeves’s autumn budget would be the final straw for many Labour voters.

She’s not wrong!!

They are just lurching from left to right to far left to moving towards far right.
It's chaos! No coherent strategy or plan.
They had 14 years to prepare and all they give us is chaos. Pure incompetence.

You know they won't take advice from anyone 🙄 otherwise they wouldn't be in current mess

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 07/09/2025 09:17

Wasn’t Sharon Graham meant to be the more moderate candidate for the Unite leadership? I hate to think what a leader less sympathetic to Starmer would have to say about this government.

Andy Burnham on Laura K on BBC1 just now, blaming AR’s treatment due to her being ‘the crime of being a northern working class woman ‘ and ‘something he himself has had to put up with over the years’. I know Andy’s background. He’s from the same part of the north west as me and that is where he has built a strong power base. But he’s educated and not strictly working class like AR. It annoys me when politicians talk down their backgrounds to make themselves appear to have overcome their difficult upbringings, and have been subject to awful snobbery etc. when, in fact. they’ve had the protection of the Labour Trade Union movement

Yes the hypocrisy and nonsense of moral high ground is ridiculous. It’ll see them out.

I still clearly remember rewatching PMQS when Keir was Leader of the Opposition and framed himself and his party as the people who acted with the utmost morality and integrity. And the Tories were all misbehaving delinquents.

The thing is I want whoever is in Government to do well - for all our sakes. I also want an effective Opposition who can hold them to account, but right now we have neither and grifters like Nigel (sorry but I am not a fan) are taking advantage.

I echo the earlier sentiments of Bring Back Rishi!

I agree, particularly about Farage. I am a bit mystified about why hard questions about things like tax and spend and how growth would be achieved aren’t being asked by Reform supporters.

And I have every expectation that Reform’s rhetoric on small boat immigrants would bite them every bit as hard as “smash the gangs” has done for Starmer.

I’d be a bit more forgiving about the lack of opposition though. Badenoch was always going to be on the back foot. Her successor will have an easier time. I hope it’s Cleverly.

Yes agree 100%. It's only cos Labour are spectacularly shit that they are polling low, there is no coherent organised opposition from Tories. If Labour were halfway competent at this stage then there would be a battle with Reform.
Reform aren't effective opposition, they are just taking votes from pissed off voters from other parties.
Labour are handing Tories an opportunity but Tories aren't capable of grasping it....

CaveMum · 07/09/2025 10:14

Out of interest, and I know not everyone is a TRIP fan here, but have you listened to their Leading interviews with former Conservative Ministers? Jeremy Hunt was the most recent, but came across very well.

Going back they also interviewed Theresa May and John Major, as well as plenty of others, so they’re worth a listen.
