If you live in England and are not white are you considering leaving the country?

I'm really starting to worry about our future here now that anti immigration / nationalistic feelings are running so high. Our town is full of flags, reform is on the rise (and is pushing everyone, including the other parties further and further to the right) and every day there is news of some sort of anti immigration / anti asylum seekers / stop the boats protest. Dh has said for the first time ever that he doesn't feel safe anymore when out and about. I worry about the kids' future. They were born here and consider themselves British but what if a large proportion of the population doesn't? I feel it's just going to get worse.

I don't really want to leave. I have lived here for more than 20 years. I feel at home here. My kids are at home here. We have a massive mortgage and I don't really fancy starting all over again now that I'm in my mid forties. Also, not sure where we could go as the whole world seems to be becoming more right wing and intolerant and more importantly we obviously both would need to find new jobs first.

Is anyone else worried? Is anyone else considering emigrating? At what point would you say that we (as in anyone visibly not ethnic English or Anglo saxons or whatever, ie not white) need to get out?

Resolve what problem though? Depends entirely on what you define as a problem, and how big a “problem” it really. And no I do not want our prime minister to encourage the frothing at the mouth that a certain portion of the population are doing. What he could do is explain to the public that the reason life feels shit for so many people is because of;
Decimation of our public services by the Tories.
Brexit
Low growth in the economy.
Growing inequality of wealth.

Those are the real issues that need addressing, and none of them were caused by immigrants.

But can’t you see that the current problems we have might not have been caused by immigration, but immigration certainly exacerbates the problems? We have no homes to house them. They’ve come with no money, so will need to go straight into social housing once they get granted asylum. There are huge waiting lists, and people are having to live in cramped unsuitable accommodation already. At what point do we say, ‘sorry, no room here’ or do we just continue to bring them in regardless of whether our infrastructure can accommodate them?

we're Irish and if reform are voted in we are definitely moving home. (I've been re-watching handmaids tale from the start and honestly it's chilling seing how suddenly things can change!) look at the US with how quickly the abortion laws / woman's rights have changed!

I understood that the abortion cut-off date in Ireland was only 12 weeks in a healthy pregnancy? Farage was suggesting reducing the date in England from 24 weeks to 22 weeks. I'm not planning to vote Reform but I might agree with this policy after further discussion.

The housing issue is definitely related to immigration and some of them do get priority on waiting lists at the expense of the people already here and waiting patiently

also the dodgy money laundering shops tend to be run by them as well

Of course it is. Just as the vehement dislike for left wing ideology is a right wing stance. That’s what having opposing ideologies means.

But I maintain that the two examples you gave are not indicative of “far left” thinking. There are many on the right who also despise Trump and your “welcoming illegal immigrants with open arms” example is simply a straw man as I don’t see anyone on the left in the UK doing this.

We'll agree to disagree.

The housing issue is because we don’t have enough affordable housing, because it hasn’t been built.

There are many problems this country has that are caused by a series of politicians letting us down.

They’re exacerbated by the immigration, in that more people are trying to access stretched services, but the reason they’re stretched isn’t immigration.

What an offensive thing to say. I wonder if you turn your nose up at these very same people when you see them repairing roads, emptying your bins, coming to fix your plumbing, electrics, picking fruit, cleaning hospitals, houses etc, packing in factories.

The working class people that you seem to despise are the back bone of this country, without them industries would grind to a halt. You'd do well to remember that.

Thank you. What a despicable, classist post. Awful.

If I spoke English or had relatives in England already, yes of course I would. As would you, if you had to flee this country.

Have a think about what you would do, if you had to run. Would you go to a country you know nothing about, can't speak the language and know no-one?

They're not 'emigrating' you know 🙄

They're "fleeing persecution"...

If I was being ran after my a man with a knife and I feared my life. I'd run in the first fucking house with the lights on ! Never mind whether they spoke my language or knew a friend of a friend residing there !

WAKE UP!

Awful isn't it. The naiveté and if ignorance is staggering.

I'm working class. Paid off mortgage aged 35. Degree entry profession. Almost finished a masters. But....guess I'm still thick hey....

I’m working class. But apparently my MEd, reasonable income and “privilege” (😂) make me a liberal elite leftie.

I’ve spent the last however long being informed I can’t possibly be working class, because I don’t own a flag or join the “immigration cause,” which is apparently the hallmark of the working class.

Oh also I live in an area with high levels of deprivation. With my MSc (almost 😁) and no debt to my name and a paid off mortgage. How dare working class people like me get above their station . Thing is, ignorant bigots like that over privileged madam , honestly think working class people are not professionals, not degree holders, not skilled or intelligent. Only middle class people can be those things...... Apparently.

And a high percentage do stay in the first few countries.
they don’t all come here.

The countries with the highest numbers of asylum seekers asked for financial aid to cope. This should’ve been offered as they’re accommodating the lions share.

Yep. Similar back story to mine. I loathe the hypocrisy and constant displays of classism, wrapped up in increasingly vulgar hate speech. And it is always coming from only one direction...

No. Obviously they don't all come here. I expect many genuine refugees do seek refuge in the first safe country. But, nobody bar nobody crosses a channel in a dinghy under the name of fleeing persecution. How on earth many options were there before that looked like a safe idea ? Many.

It's economic migration.
In which case , apply legally.

We are in London and not white and notice a lot more racism. We feel the UK isn’t welcoming to poc and are looking to leave. Despite politeness at a superficial level, the message is clear. We are looking at Australia.

A (white) Aussie friend living here in the UK for decades was telling me how racist Australia has become since he left. That's just one anecdote though...

There's someone ranting about this on our local Facebook group today. Apparently they should be housed in tents, to put them off. Quite where those tents are and what we do with the people in them when it's freezing/snowing/blowing galeforce winds, I do not know. These people aren't blessed with brains.

Edited

To be fair, a number of European countries, including Denmark, the Netherlands and Germany have housed asylum seekers and refugees in tents or tent cities, including during periods of snow and cold weather conditions.

Are you a poc? Are you worried about the increase in racism and are you intending to leave the uk?

People respect them though, as those countries have a no nonsense approach and clearly and calmly state their case. Their natives and busy apologising for existing first and foremost.

The people doing almost all of the jobs you are listing here near me are immigrants. I very much respect the jobs that they are doing.
I am not sure if that is the point you are making, I hope it is.

The protests are against “illegal” immigration, so unless you are illegal why would you feel the need to move? People have had enough of the government spending our taxes on illegals instead of looking after our people regardless of ethnicity backgrounds.

Maybe because even though I was born here the colour of my skin means I’m suddenly getting abuse in the street. Looking Pakistani for example, even when you’re not has become an issue. I have Punjabi Sikh friends being called racist names suggestive they are Pakistani Muslims. And things are even worse for the Pakistani communities being treated as if they are all affiliated with the tiny, tiny minority who have been involved in grooming gangs.
Unfortunately racists don’t stop to check if a person was born here or came illegally, the hatred is being directed at all of us regardless.

"poc" you mean black or brown ? No I'm not. Am I worried about the increase in racism ? I think there is debate to be had whether there is an increase in racism. Or is there far more to it than that? I'd argue a lot of the current angst is not rooted in racism. Do I think it's a concern that a small number of people are using rte excuse to target anyone that doesn't look like a white Brit? Yes I do think that's a big problem and is wholly unacceptable. I don't believe though , that small number of people represent "Britain become more racist" I think it's scare mongering and hyperbole.

Am I planning to leave the UK ? No. Because on balance, it's a pretty fair and decent place to live for all (at this time of writing)

I don’t agree

also why do we have to keep building on our green fields which is compromising environmental issues and food security.

less immigrants would mean more housing. It never used to be a problem and families could afford housing
