Happy September and Autumn to you all.

Watched GMB this morning and nice to see what Philip’s said being challenged and some facts being added.

Also did a bit on Angela Rayer and it didn’t matter how many times they said the flats her only home it seemed to be repeated she has 3. But was great to hear the woman (forget her name but posh well known ex MP) say she admires how she’s aspired to be where she’s at whether she agree with her actions or not and it’s more about optics than her actions.

Also once again it being acknowledged that the hotels was what Tory’s set up and even Andrew Pearce (sp?) of the DM said the Tory’s lost control of immigration and Labour has inherited this mess not created it.

Drove into city this morning for ds training and flags everywhere and graffiti of red crosses on signs .

DS was furious!

There's been some peculiar shenanigans going on with this thread today. This morning I couldn't refresh properly and get updates on this thread, but could on others.

Yes, I've had to log out umpteen times over the weekend and then log back in to post.

Nick Robinson on R4 this morning held Philp to account on Hotels and consulting locals.

All politicians should have their hypocrisy pointed out, esp when its so blatant, as was Philp.... trying to erase his actions in opening the Bell Hotel in the first place.

bombastix · 01/09/2025 10:06

I was just about to post this @Alexandra2001 has beat me to it. It is quite amusing but also very serious. Look this man wants to lead us or be part of the next government. Perhaps people are waking up to the reality that increasing nationalism will destabilise and not improve the UK.

The other thing is Jack Straw saying that the GFA is not a barrier to leaving the ECHR. That’s true.

What is also true is that the Convention countries can negotiate changes to the ECHR and implement policies which are much tougher on asylum and migration. It looks like Yvette Cooper is starting to follow more of a Danish model in this respect, all of which is currently ECHR compatible.

itsgettingweird · 01/09/2025 10:13

Glad to hear R4 also held him up.

As an aside I was reading again the other day how Badenoch is encouraging councils to appeal against hotel use and then thought “you were part of the creation of this”

I kept wondering why she was always being mentioned - then I remembered she’s LOTO 🤦🏼‍♀️

I think that probably shows how irrelevant Tory’s have become against Reform and in general?

I mean someone who’s interested in and discusses politics daily forgetting that fact …….. 🤦🏼‍♀️

She’s making an announcement later?

Notonthestairs · 01/09/2025 10:18

Yes, we can leave the ECHR.
But we would be in breach of the GFA.
As we would under the Windsor Agreement.

Which leaves things, at best, messy.

Lalgarh · 01/09/2025 10:18

Reshuffle incoming.

He's sacked one of his Comms chiefs and replaced one with a former Blair apparatchik turned lobbyist

It came out over the weekend regarding family reunification which is a Danish policy rebadged.

The Home Office will also be using adjudication rather than the full judicial process for asylum seeker claims.

I would assume more Danish style policies based on this depending on how the Labour vote looks.

I don’t think it’s as complex as that. Straw is right. The GFA is an agreement that can be updated to guarantee the human rights of those who are subject to it now, as can the Windsor Framework. This is not impossible. It depends on agreement.

If the ECHR is amended by its Convention members it might be totally unnecessary. We will see.

PandoraSocks · 01/09/2025 10:30

As @Lalgarh says, lots of changes inside No. 10

BIossomtoes · 01/09/2025 10:15

Yes a good article. Actually very balanced.

It’s a double edged sword because people need time off to be fit enough for the job but you can’t argue with the fact Farage has taken the opportunity to “play PM”.

It’s one of the issues we’ve talked about lots - Labour comms just isn’t up to the job and it needs improving.

Especially because I think they have actually done lots but it’s being drowned out.

I know they won’t a lot of time looking at other countries approaches to things before the GE. They looked at lot at approaches to childcare too.

According to Diane Abbott, Jack Straw is incorrect. "The ECHR is written into The Good Friday Agreement for good reason. It is the guarantor of anti-discrimination which is central to the GFA, and an international guarantor is needed because the GFA is a treaty between Britain and Ireland."

itsgettingweird · 01/09/2025 10:40

BIossomtoes · 01/09/2025 10:35

Tim Allan is a really good appointment. He’s a heavyweight with decades of experience. He wrote this letter to Milliband years ago but a lot of it is still relevant.

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2010/oct/03/ed-miliband-tim-allan-labour

That’s powerful

BIossomtoes · 01/09/2025 10:43

My understanding is that both Straw and Blunkett are recommending suspending some aspects of the EHCR temporarily. Neither are suggesting it should be ditched or even that all of it should be suspended.

Sadly, Diana Abbott you announce Saturdays winning lottery numbers today, and there would still be a rollover come Sunday.

E2A: Which gives me an idea for a way to force the media to want to report things they tend to avoid ....

Karistyleaftea · 01/09/2025 10:44

I quite like Darren Jones too, he comes across well in appearances.
However good Labour's comms become , they will always be up against a media which serves its own agenda , seemingly.
There are some good things coming along from Labour, in my opinion.
