Left the North East this morning and saw a few, lots on the motorway bridges and our local fb page is full of them.

yes, they seem to be all over London at the moment! It’s lovely, reminds me of The Sex Pistols! Very upbeat, and certainly a good idea to celebrate the Rugby and being British.

I'm not sure that's the vibe The Sex Pistols were going for..

The way to detoxify the flag of St George is for as many people as possible to display it. The two European countries I know the best, Italy and Sweden, manage to be proudly patriotic when they display their flags. In England, there is always the undercurrent of the far right.

Absolutely agree. The flag will only carry the connotation you give it. It seems to me to be very defeatist to think “ our flag has been stolen by the people we dislike, so we can’t use it”. Myopia. The flag endures and has endured.

That’s irrelevant.

CherryVanillaPie · 24/08/2025 16:03

Not noticed any yet but will look out.

PuppyMonkey · 24/08/2025 16:03

My nearest town is a notorious spot for thick as shit racist twats and indeed was in the news earlier this year for its painted mini roundabout, which at least was done because it was actually St George’s Day at the time. Now, Spotted is full of people posting about the latest ones that’ have appeared on their road overnight. It does not make me proud. Sad

A convenient and practical way to display the St George Flag.

It looks really scummy and horrible. It is not the done thing in the UK - despite whatever people claim it has right wing racist undertones. Anyone claiming otherwise is either lying or hasn't bothered to look closely at the social media channels promoting it, (a bit like when Britain First share a post saying we shouldn't kick puppies).

Not in the context of your post??

Notagain75 · 24/08/2025 16:05

No and I'm very happy about that

Nazi ideology was a toxic fusion of racism (including racial hierarchy, Aryan supremacy, and virulent antisemitism), authoritarianism (centered on the "Führerprinzip"-one-man rule-and a total rejection of democracy, liberalism, and parliamentary governance), extreme ultranationalism (emphasizing "Volk," blood, and soil), and militarism (driven by the concept of Lebensraum and an aggressive expansionist military doctrine). All of this was underpinned by pseudo-scientific theories of racial purity and distorted historical myths - culminating in the most devastating war in human history (World War II) and the systematic genocide of millions.

Can I politely suggest that if you see a swastika in the cross of St George then you have no idea what you’re talking about. And perhaps a trip to the history section of your local library is in order.

Plenty of posters on here have described the situations in their home towns where far right groups have lead this activity and shouted about it on SM. I haven’t seen any posts where someone has described a counter protest to this, where people have put up the UF or GC and shouted loudly that it’s to claim it back from those groups. So right now, this flag waving is absolutely going to be seen in support of nationalism and “getting are country back”. How could it not be?

Maddy70 · 24/08/2025 16:07

Embarrassing isn't it?

Lots where I live. There was also a protest outside a hotel housing asylum seekers yesterday. Utterly shameful.

I don’t use CHATGPT, and I’m a technology writer by trade. I know what it spits out is an inferior product.

Yeah, hijacked is the right term.
The SNP zealots up here hijacked our saltire for their cause and it has saddened me.

Lion Rampant is a far cooler flag anyway.

I'm not.

Is it a rule?

aloofandround · 24/08/2025 16:14

Yes, saw lots today on three motorway bridges on the M6 and then in the little town I was visiting - mix of union jacks and English flags. Thought they looked quite cheery and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with a bit of national pride. The flags all come out during royal events or for football matches and no one thinks twice so why is it suddenly ‘racist’ to do it outside of those times? I am happy when people emigrate to the UK and I’m sure that an English flag flying in England is hardly going to cause offence?

No other country has this fear of flying their own flag - just seems to be a peculiar English hang up.

That'll be because of the links to the far right, football hooligans and racists.

I wonder how much this is all going to cost the already struggling councils to repaint things?

If they can have rainbow coloured zebra crossings, I have no issue with St George’s cross on a roundabout.

SeaSoul · 24/08/2025 16:16

@Jamesblonde2 if you're a UK tax payer you'll be paying public servants to take down the flags on the M6 before they become a safety hazard.

savvy7 · 24/08/2025 16:23

Yes there are some in Cheshire. Union Jacks on motorway bridges. I don't approve at all.

I suggest that if you can't see the link then you are not looking hard enough.

Sirzy · 24/08/2025 16:25

I wonder how long before an accident is caused by one of the flags falling off a bridge?
