Left the North East this morning and saw a few, lots on the motorway bridges and our local fb page is full of them.

And that's why hard pressed councils will have to send people out to take them down.

Nazi ideology was a toxic fusion of racism (including racial hierarchy, Aryan supremacy, and virulent antisemitism), authoritarianism (centered on the "Führerprinzip"-one-man rule-and a total rejection of democracy, liberalism, and parliamentary governance), extreme ultranationalism (emphasizing "Volk," blood, and soil), and militarism (driven by the concept of Lebensraum and an aggressive expansionist military doctrine). All of this was underpinned by pseudo-scientific theories of racial purity and distorted historical myths - culminating in the most devastating war in human history (World War II) and the systematic genocide of millions.

Can I politely suggest that if you see a swastika in the cross of St George then you have no idea what you’re talking about. And perhaps a trip to the history section of your local library is in order.

This is precisely what some of us are concerned about.

spoonbillstretford · 24/08/2025 16:28

No. We sometimes have a union flag and French when we have people over for town twinning. England flags when a sports tournament is on. When the Charlie Hebdo shooting took place we had the French flag at half mast.

I also think that a large percentage of the UK population thinks the American obsession with their flag is at best bloody weird and at worst sinister.

This.

Lion Rampant is a far cooler flag anyway.

This is true 😁

It has to start somewhere

I think we all know what Fascism and the Far Right are about.

So yeah, Red crosses today, swastikas tomorrow.

Bingbongsingalong · 24/08/2025 16:37

A few, but mostly it has been the local Facebook groups that are awash with people posting pictures of flags and complaining about why roundabouts haven't been painted, and then almost immediately making their intentions entirely transparent when they start making predominently racist, but also transphobic comments and spouting Reform bullshit. I have tried politely asking them if they intend to do anything tangible to evidence their support for British values, but they don't seem to like that question, and most don't seem to be aware of what values are even associated with the flag. So it would seem that it's just arbitrary flag flying to prove they are patriotic nationalist . I've learned a whole new language of insults though, apparently I'm a 'melt,' not entirely sure what to make of that to be honest...lovely.

mugglewump · 24/08/2025 16:37

Unauthorised flags in public places and painting the cross of the Syrian (let's not forget) St George is graffiti. If you would object to any other kind of graffiti, do not condone this. It is designed to be divisive and create disharmony. It is not innocent pride in our nation, it's brainwashing. Half the flags are either upside down or at half-mast. How does that say pride in our nation?

There are no flags near me and I am glad because I think they would be an eye-sore (badly erected) and potentially obsure important road signage (hazardous). I am not anti-flag, but I do not like the sentiment behind this populist campaign. Long gone are the days of Cool Britannia when our creative industries were celebrated as the best in the world and the Union Jack had positive connotations of creativity, good design, industiousness and forward-thinking.

Why are people putting out flags?

Really?

MrsSkylerWhite · 24/08/2025 16:40

mum2jakie · 24/08/2025 14:01

It started due to the anti- asylum hotels protest. I've seen flags out today- we don't even have any hotels locally! Just people jumping on the bandwagon. Mind you, we know have a Reform council...

So do we. We’re moving away at the end of next week, thank goodness.

Driving back from Scotland today, couple of union flags on bridges over the motorway between Lancaster and Preston.

MrsSkylerWhite · 24/08/2025 16:41

So actually no, not English flags!

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 24/08/2025 16:46

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 24/08/2025 15:44

Yeah, hijacked is the right term.
The SNP zealots up here hijacked our saltire for their cause and it has saddened me.

What complete and utter nonsense.

Nobody "hijacked" the Saltire. It's the flag of Scotland and represents Scotland in it's entirety.

Everyone in Scotland can choose to fly a Saltire, but unionists chose instead to fly the union flag.

Nobody "hijacked" anything.

spot the reform voters, dangerous nationalism

🥱

HolidayInCambodia25 · 24/08/2025 16:51

Not enough.

HollyhockDays · 24/08/2025 16:59

I live in Northern Ireland and it’s very common for particular areas to put up Union flags for the 12th of July event. It’s territorial marking along with painting the curbstones.

It’s pretty clear what message they’re trying to send doing this in England.

828Pax · 24/08/2025 17:01

passed 3 local mini roundabouts today, all with a Red Cross on them

Gladysknightjustwalkinmyshoes · 24/08/2025 17:04

DemBonesDemBones · 24/08/2025 14:22

No but I’m in Scotland 😆

Aw you beat me to it😁

purdypuma · 24/08/2025 17:13

Not seen any on my street BUT there's a lot popping up in my parents village only 5 minutes down the road. Ex pit village, very near to a hotel where the the riots took place last year with 99% white British population. Mainly St George crosses with a few union jacks mingled in.

I personally wouldn't have one displayed but I think that if folk are told to take them down then there will be an almighty kick off again. FWIW I do think that if people want to display their national flag, preferably the union jack, then they should allowed to do so as local authorities telling people to take them down plays further in to the hands of the racists & fuels the rhetoric that we aren't allowed to have a sense of national pride. Taking down a flag is not going to change how a person feels about asylum seekers.

Avalovelace · 24/08/2025 17:17

Yep, multiple flags all down the M2 overhead bridges. And I saw the twats doing it, climbing the wrong side of the barriers as I was driving under.

WanderingGiraffe · 24/08/2025 17:18

aloofandround · 24/08/2025 16:14

Yes, saw lots today on three motorway bridges on the M6 and then in the little town I was visiting - mix of union jacks and English flags. Thought they looked quite cheery and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with a bit of national pride. The flags all come out during royal events or for football matches and no one thinks twice so why is it suddenly ‘racist’ to do it outside of those times? I am happy when people emigrate to the UK and I’m sure that an English flag flying in England is hardly going to cause offence?

No other country has this fear of flying their own flag - just seems to be a peculiar English hang up.

Edited

I reckon I’m quite well travelled and it’s very rare to see a national flag being flown by the man in the street (except in the USA, or temporarily for major sports/cultural events). I don’t think people all over the world are ‘scared’, there’s just no reason to fly a flag unless you are (trying to) make a statement.

ilovesooty · 24/08/2025 17:19

Sirzy · 24/08/2025 16:25

I wonder how long before an accident is caused by one of the flags falling off a bridge?

Anyone who's found to have put flags on a motorway bridge should be prosecuted.

LemonLymanDotCom · 24/08/2025 17:20

Nope, not a single one, but I am in London, not Brexit/Reform heartlands thank goodness.

Sera1989 · 24/08/2025 17:20

Yes along one of the A roads here. Apparently the council took half of them down but the workers were verbally assaulted by residents. There are also some crosses on mini roundabouts but they’re kind of pink and look terrible, I’ve got lipsticks that would’ve looked better than whatever paint they used

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 24/08/2025 17:23

No. Lots of Welsh flags though!

No but it might prevent some asylum seekers being fearful.
