Left the North East this morning and saw a few, lots on the motorway bridges and our local fb page is full of them.

the mini roundabout has been painted in my village. Not sure why they can’t put a flag up on their own house - this certainly has racist undertones

TeapotTallulah · 24/08/2025 14:25

Not seen a flag but drove round a mini roundabout today that had been spray painted.

BlueEyedBogWitch · 24/08/2025 14:25

Yes. And it’s nationalism, not patriotism. Makes me sick.

TomatoSandwiches · 24/08/2025 14:26

No, why would there be?

MintTwirl · 24/08/2025 14:26

Yes, lots in my town. I saw a man with a ladder putting them up on every streetlight on a massive main road yesterday. And then when they get removed they will act like victims and say we can’t even fly our own flag.

Kaaardiffgalnow · 24/08/2025 14:26

Nope but I'm in Wales. Anyone flying an England flag around here would probably get very short shrift.

MaryGreenhill · 24/08/2025 14:27

No

HarperStern · 24/08/2025 14:28

Red crosses on the mini roundabouts - fine to fly your personal flags on your personal property but not in favour of vandalising public space.

MzMJ · 24/08/2025 14:05

A lot of people will say 'racism'.

And I think thats exactly why. We've been told for so long that being British is something tonbe ashamed of, it's not something to celebrate. You celebrate other cultures, not ours. It's somehow become a controversial thing to fly our own flag and people want to reclaim it as a positive thing.

Most every country I've ever visited flies it's own flag proudly and it's common to see the flag, but not here.

I think its also a rebellion, not against 'immigrants ' but against the Government, our leadership that has let us down, again and again, iver decades. It's a sign that people love their country. It shouldn't feel controversial to say that.

exactly this. People are fed up being told we can't celebrate our nation,. our flag, and our culture. But other people can celebrate theirs.

I spent 6 months in the USA and people put the American flag EVERYWHERE. National pride is a good thing

Ah yes, America - such an inspirational place, let’s follow their example, what could possibly go wrong?! 🙄😳

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 24/08/2025 14:29

Nope none.

Middle class Labour constituency. They’re horrible and nothing to do with national pride.

Who is apparently telling you this?

Are England rugby fans having their flags confiscated?

flyingsquirrelsagogo · 24/08/2025 14:30

Not where I am. I live in Walthamstow in NE London. It’s extremely diverse here and the local population has made it very loud and clear that we do not accept any far right xenophobic bollocks in our community. There will be the odd outlier, but usually the only time you’d see the George Cross or union flag here is during a major sporting event.
Just up the road in Chingford, it’s much less diverse, and there are England flags flying there.
We are only a few miles from Epping.

This article is interesting:

A St George's flag hangs from a lamppost on an empty street.

The questions about St George's and union jack flags lining English streets

With St George's and union jack flags appearing on many lampposts, we visit the epicentre of the phenomenon to find out why.

There are plenty of saltire crosses about here, but I think they’re associated with other prejudices 😅

When have people been told this? I have never heard of anyone being told they can’t fly the flag on their own property(obviously with planning if they want to put in a massive flagpole), in fact when the football is on there are flags literally everywhere.

spot the reform voters, dangerous nationalism

I know, outrageous isn't it!! English people flying English flags in England. Whatever next?!

I often wonder what people would do if Britain was ever invaded like Ukraine. You'd soon be waving the flags and expecting people to go and defend you. Well good luck, because I wouldn't lift the little finger on my right hand to defend modern Britain, and I'm sure many others feel the same way. Who is going to fight for a country that hates itself, is ashamed of its past and has completely lost its identity? I certainly wouldn't, and I say that as someone whose ancestors fought and bled in both WW1 and WW2.

if you want to blame someone for that, you can blame the far right nationalist groups who co-opted the George Cross a long time ago into something that those of us who are not racist or xenophobic do not want to be associated with.
Is there anything else other than the flag that were are being told that we can’t celebrate regarding our nation or our culture? I’d love some examples.

Ashipcalleddignity · 24/08/2025 14:34

Absolutely loads here in South Northumberland. It's 100 percent all the anti immigration lot as they have been proudly announcing it's them. There's been horrible protests in all the neighbouring towns including Newcastle city centre fo the last 3 weeks. The hatred and venom being directed to not only immigrants but to ANY person of colour in the area is horrific. Anyone who thinks the flags are a symbol of " National pride" and not hatred are either racist or delusional.

Yeo same in my town. It’s making me feel quite uneasy tbh, the racial divide in my area seems to be growing.

Ddakji · 24/08/2025 14:36

No, but I’m in liberal lefty luvvie land where just about any flag appears to be preferable to the English one.

Recently seen - Palestinian, Ukrainian, trans.

bombastix · 24/08/2025 14:36

No. There are Palestinian flags. Tbh I would like a zero tolerance policy on them unless it’s for sport. I don’t want flags of any kind except on government buildings.

If we had been less squeamish about English national identity we would not have got to this point where people can feel grievance. This is all connected with displays of solidarity with Palestine which are becoming increasingly overwrought.

Please given me some examples, apart from the odd assumptions about not being allowed to fly a flag, that shows that Britain hates itself and is ashamed of its past. What aspects of its past, exactly?
this is the kind of thing people say to try and justify culture wars, but then really struggle to given any actual evidence.

Sundaykitchen · 24/08/2025 14:37

No English flags as I am in Wales but there is a demo outside a hotel near Cardiff airport and people are holding Welsh flags.

And yet people are innocently saying that its not a race thing, just a show of national pride…

Nope, this weekend it’s the anti asylum seeker and far right mob trying to pretend it’s because “people are fed up with being told we can’t celebrate our nation”.
