Tea and coffee on waking

I'm wondering if this is a generational thing. I'm mid fifties and myself and DH always have drank either tea or coffee as soon as we wake up. Our young adult dcs don't. Where I work it is only the older staff that drink tea and coffee at all. The younger ones usually have just water or cold drinks. Do you drink it specifically on waking and if do what age roughly are you?

I’m in my 40’s and the first thing I do when I wake up is put the kettle on!

realslimshade · 23/08/2025 09:41

2 mugs of tea first thing and I’m 41

DeirdreChambersWhatACoincidence · 23/08/2025 09:42

43 and I have a very large tea in bed before anything else happens.

Well, it's not the first thing I do on waking but after having a shower and getting dressed I do have a cup of tea with breakfast every day. Mid 40s.

Cobbstown · 23/08/2025 09:42

Quite a few people these days and at my work don't drink hot drinks like tea and coffee. I feel they are missing out!

Cherrysoup · 23/08/2025 09:43

Same age as you and seriously strong coffee first thing, always. My mum, 87 this week, has a fag then coffee. A friend, same age as me, doesn’t drink tea or coffee, which always strikes me as odd. Obviously we’re all different!

chiefscoutsgoldaward · 23/08/2025 09:43

Late 40s and I always start the day with a cup of tea in bed!

DD15 does as well though, but that is probably because we bring her one.

Ekkekkkeekkkekk · 23/08/2025 09:45

Myself and DH do tea (I drink Rooibos because I cannot do caffeine) and short.coffee first thing.

DD does a huge glass of water then a short coffee. She’s always fasted in the morning. I gave up trying to get her to eat breakfast when she was 9. She’ll go till lunchtime then have her first meal.

Venalopolos · 23/08/2025 09:46

Mid 30s and I have a cup of tea or coffee when I start work, so not as soon as I get up but early doors.

The grads at my work also drink tea or regularly have a take away coffee so I haven’t noticed a generational change on this.

TaborlinTheGreat · 23/08/2025 09:47

Dh both have tea (or dh sometimes coffee) on waking. So does 20yo dd. Ds 17 is showing no inclination to drink tea or coffee.

Lougle · 23/08/2025 09:53

DH makes me tea when he leaves for work.

Denim4ever · 23/08/2025 09:58

Shower, coffee, fruit, toast and off to work. DS 20 pretty similar, but doesn't always bother with toast when at uni. DH likes cereal, DS and I not so much.

It's often the only time I have coffee, even when I used to meet my parents for coffee I'd usually have hot choc or tea. I tend to have herbal tea at work and bring my own even though work provide tea bags, milk and instant coffee. If DS is at home we might have a cup of tea in the afternoon otherwise I don't really bother.

bloodredfeaturewall · 23/08/2025 10:06

coffee first thing. don't talk to me before that!
dh doesn't drink hot drinks at all, he drinks cola instead.

dc (older teens) have a glas of water. never a hot drink.

Imperfectpolly · 23/08/2025 10:11

I'm 35. We have coffee first thing in bed.
At work, the juniors (around 21) mostly drink tea.

RampantIvy · 23/08/2025 10:13

DD is 25 and always starts the day with a coffee.

Firstshoes · 23/08/2025 10:14

It seems some younger people still drink it. I can't imagine starting the day without one. The first thing I check when I book a hotel is that it has a kettle Grin.

My children are 50%-
2 aged 35 and 38 love their tea and coffee
2 aged 28 and 39 never touch it.
At work, we have 3 under 30s, and only 1 of them drinks hot drinks.
It’s definitely less popular amongst the younger generations. Tho my middle DGD14 loves tea, and many ‘old lady’ things- print long skirts and dresses, glasses on a chain, lace etc. it’s adorable!

NewYorkSummer · 23/08/2025 10:15

Coffee for us. DD in her 20s always has a cup of tea though!

828Pax · 23/08/2025 10:17

I'm 39 and as soon as I am downstairs I have 2 coffees before I can do anything else!

Davros · 23/08/2025 10:18

I’m 65 and save my first tea for when I’ve showered and dressed and got myself downstairs to have with food of the gods, I.e. toast

Tea definitely x2 before I leave the house. Hotel I check same, took travel kettle to Kefalonia and Salou in July. So sad, I had to get it out of hand luggage for scanning in the airport and got some very weird looks!

GreenAndWhiteStripes · 23/08/2025 10:19

I'm 51. I typically have one cup of coffee a day, but not first thing - usually a couple of hours after waking up.

My parents are in their 80s and drink loads of cups of tea! My kids are late teens and don't drink much tea or coffee.

JudyP · 23/08/2025 10:19

52 and I get up at 6 ish and don’t have my first tea until I’m sitting in work at 8.30 ish - still feels ‘first thing’ to me but now I’m thinking about it it’s really not!

DD is 25 and always starts the day with a coffee.

Mine is 26, likewise, one strong black.
Her BF isn’t fussed - he drinks tea in the day, decaf in the afternoon, but not coffee. They both like herbals some of the time.
Im 64 - 2 large mugs of tea and then later one milky coffee, more tea during the day switching to decaf mid afternoon.
dh used to drink a lot of coffee but just has one or two decafs as caffeine isn’t good for his health issues. Sometimes decaf tea or herbals, but has to drink 2-3 large glasses of potassium solution a day.

HugHog · 23/08/2025 10:22

I taught my kids to like tea and coffee because I always think that adults who don't are missing out! I started them on decaf tea at about 10 and now they enjoy it, we have a cup of tea together in the morning. My oldest likes coffee now too, she kept trying it until she liked it. I feel like it will make socialising easier in some small ways and is also just one of life's pleasures.
