Labour isn't working - Thread 6

A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. Labour isn't working.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

@twistyizzy I was berated last night by a man at a function I went to for not liking Starmer and feeling politically homeless. He also made a comment about women as if we were a homogenous mass. It was at that point that I remembered why I went off the left many years ago partly because of the rampant misogyny hidden behind concern or issues. It’s the hypocrisy I can’t stand, Rayner buying a second home is the latest example.

ThePhantomoftheEcobubbleOpera · 28/08/2025 09:16

My kids have dual nationality but I'm not sure about moving abroad being the easy answer. DH has lived here as long as he lived in his home country now and, despite it being on everybody's hit list of places they'd move to, it has problems if its own that don't get much of an airing and others coming down the pipeline.

It's an option but if you have a solid, supportive and warm family it's a lot to give up and hope you can bridge the gap with visits home and zoom. And then once you've bought a home, built a business, started a family - it's a lot to chop and change.

Anyway, I have my fingers crossed that things will get better with a change in government.

I hear you; I had a similar interaction with a lefty man who was trying to ridicule me on our towns FB page. This was online so I felt more comfortable saying to him that he was being patronising and this was more telling about him than me. He didn't reply so presumably he's gone off in a sulk LOL. And yes I can't stand hypocrisy either and its rampant on the left.

Although, full declaration, my reluctance to think about my kids moving abroad might be led by how pathetic I'm being about buying all the bits my eldest needs for uni today.

I live in hope! Imagine Labour actually got another term 😱

Well Starmer said he would need at least two terms to put everything right. What a joker.

Time for yet another "reset"? Cos the other billion ones worked so well

ThePhantomoftheEcobubbleOpera · 28/08/2025 09:55

Two terms is unlikely when there seems to be more an d more mumblings that they won't survive the first one.

Panic in the markets will force Starmer into an early election.

Allister Heath description of Reeves as Wile Coyote, cycling mid-air having run off the cliff made me laugh but, jeez, this shit is dire.

TwoTierBbq · 28/08/2025 10:06

It is dire I don't know why it's not getting as much horror as Truss from the media ??

ThePhantomoftheEcobubbleOpera · 28/08/2025 10:20

I think it was because we knew immediately that the mortgage interest rates would jump from historic lows to something far more significant. It was a financial fact that the public understood and could see the impact of in their own budgets.

I'm not sure many understand the scale of borrowing, what is means when the interest rates are higher on that borrowing, if they know what a gilt is, what it means for benefits and services when it rises.

I just don't think it makes for easy headlines.

ThePhantomoftheEcobubbleOpera · 28/08/2025 10:49

Looks like Torsten Bell has got his way and landlords will pay ni on landlord income. Or in other news, more costs to be passed to to renters - add it to the increased costs and the decrease in supply that follows from the minimum EPC in rental home changes and the renters rights bill.

CruCru · 28/08/2025 11:26

I’ve been pondering the NI on rental income proposal and I don’t hate it as much as the other ideas (I am a landlord). Presumably those NI contributions will be a credit towards the state pension.

I think the ideas I hate are those that make people feel insecure. Introducing a lifetime limit on cash gifts is going to enrage loads of people - even if they wouldn’t leave an estate large enough to generate inheritance tax. I also hate VAT on school fees but that has been covered on MN so comprehensively that I don’t think I’ll go into it now.

My understanding of conservatism is that, if you pay your taxes on time and commit no nuisance, you should be left alone. Introducing an idea that giving your children money / gifts will leave them a problem later on is not leaving them alone.

ThePhantomoftheEcobubbleOpera · 28/08/2025 11:33

I'm just a bit despairing about how many changes they are willing to push through so quickly without standing back to see the outcome of each and if it amounts to an own goal.

The NI rises on employers would have been fine in isolation too but then you add the minimum wage rises and incoming enhanced employment rights and it compounds to have the opposite effect of the intention, and now we have more joblessness, more people to support on benefits and less revenue for the Treasury.

TheNuthatch · 27/08/2025 23:22

<<hugs>> Sorry you're feeling like this.

It's a difficult decision to make. All I can say is that when our son first moved abroad, it felt like he was going to be a million miles away. The reality is that flights are cheap and regular. I can get there, or he can get here in a few hours. I'm so glad he left, another of my dc plans to do the same.
My DH also has itchy feet. He's quite nomadic. We moved around a lot (including abroad) before we had kids, but decided to raise them here. If our business fails, I know he will want to leave again.

I think if you’re used to living in different countries the decision to move is easier. Let’s hope your business thrives despite the government. DP lived and worked abroad for 3 years so he’d be up for the move.

Arrearing50 · 28/08/2025 12:27

Agree nobody is looking at the overview on how much all these small fiddly changes are hitting particular groups. It’s all ‘that group can pay’ ‘that group can cope with losing x’

Southwestten · 28/08/2025 13:42

If spite is the motivation for introducing taxes and regulations then no amount of plausible arguments against them will make the slightest difference.

Absolutely right. The same goes for most of the rabid Labour comrades. Awful.

Yep. Astonishing when you think they didn't even exist a couple of years ago.

Crikey; it really is signalling that a lot of people aren't happy.

Hollyohara · 28/08/2025 15:29

A lot of people are very unhappy.

2,538 adults on this poll. I’d still like to see a much bigger sample size. Although we know that eg. Reelection polls are notoriously unreliable!
