Millie Bobbie Brown adopts

Millie Bobbie Brown and her husband have adopted a baby. It’s so refreshing to hear of a celebrity adopting rather than using a surrogate. Especially as we heard of another celeb using surrogacy yet again this week.

She's always seemed quite down to earth.
Who's recently had a surrogate? I know MN absolutely hates them and I haven't come to my own conclusions about it yet, I can see both sides at the moment.

Michelle Williams recently used a surrogate for her 4th child.

Joss Stone has also adopted. I like her and Millie, you’re right Millie does seem down to earth.

They seem like a nice couple, they love animals and would appear to be wise beyond their years I am happy for them.

Ds1 has a poorly concealed crush on MBB so I know all the ins and outs of her love life in furious ' Who gets married at 18?' and ' what the hell kind of name is Jake Bonjiovi' outbursts!

21 is very young to adopt. It is theoretically possible in the UK but very unlikely as social workers would have all kinds of concerns.

I adopted aged 39. It is challenging for many reasons. I hope they have lots of support.

The UK and USA adoption 'systems' are quite, quite different though, aren't they?

She's always talked about wanting children young, wanting a big family, and that she's interested in adopting. Good for her, she does seem wise beyond her years as pp said.

It seems insane to me for 21- and 23-year-olds who’ve been married a year to be approved as adoptive parents. It’s nothing against them personally, but it’s incredibly young to be entrusted with the raising of a child who will, almost by definition, have significantly higher emotional needs (and quite possibly medical needs) than a baby they conceived themselves.

Yes I was shocked for similar reasons. Seems a very precarious set of circumstances for a vulnerable child. I guess people turn a blind eye to the welfare of children when the glitz of Hollywood is in the mix.

Blimey, she’s living on fast forward, isn’t she?

Well, in both you can adopt children from the care system at no cost but with a lot of assessment. In the US you can also adopt privately - prospective parents find a pregnant woman who wants to relinquished the baby and pay her "expenses". The film 'Juno' features this kind of adoption. There are far fewer checks.

Whatever, parenting a biologically unrelated child is not necessarily straightforward. Babies removed at birth can suffer from the separation from birth mother - this is known as the 'primal wound' and it can have ongoing implications.

Also, the birth mother may have taken drugs, alcohol, have been highly stressed. The baby may have many additional needs.

Adoption is often very challenging, though rewarding. But for a 21 year old to sign up for it is remarkable.

I was looking for a thread on this. I mean, what the hell? I don't really believe it. Is this a child made to order? What normal social workers in their right minds would hand over a child in foster care to such a young couple in the spotlight? I just don't believe the authenticity of this. I know adoption personally from many sides and this arrangement is batshit and not likely to be in the best interests of the child.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 21/08/2025 21:23

I imagine there are sadly more babies available to adopt in the US due to their insane abortion laws.

It will probably be a private adoption, not the sort we have here.

AppropriateAdult · 21/08/2025 21:30

I’m sure it’s a private adoption, I can’t see it being approved otherwise.

Squeezingintomyjeans · 21/08/2025 21:41

I’m not sure why it’s seen as a good thing - it just seems like celebrities using their money to get what they want rather than doing things the way normal people have to. You can bet money has changed hands and while they may be good parents - I don’t know anything about them - it feels wrong to me.

And yet no one vets teenagers having babies.

I know obviously they can't, but you get my drift.

Oh no.is he raging she didn't find him 😀

She seems very mature for her age (although i had a baby at that age) she seems a nice girl and a lovely couple good luck to them

But the point is that children who have been permanently separated from their natural mothers have a much higher rate of emotional difficulties which can be lifelong, as well as being more likely to have additional physical/medical needs. It makes it even more important that adoptive parents have the maturity and life experience to cope with more-demanding-than-average parenting, which nobody in their early 20s is likely to have.

OhDorWheresthesalad · 21/08/2025 22:03

It smacks of socially acceptable surrogacy. They've only been married 5 minutes .

NooNakedJacuzziness · 21/08/2025 22:06

We’re missing the most shocking part - Jon Bon Jovi is a grandad!!

No, but adoption is a very extreme event in the life of a child. It means severing the biological relationship with birth mother and father and giving it to strangers. It should only happen in exceptional circumstances. But in the US it is often done for money.

Gooddry · 21/08/2025 22:12

Ansolutely a private adoption

EachandEveryone · 21/08/2025 22:16

This is no different to surrogacy.
