Where do you food shop?

Lighthearted thread just genuinely wondering where the majority of people do their food shopping & why?

we’re a family of 3 (myself, DH & DS) and for years we’re longtime Asda shoppers. Mainly because, I think, my parents were Asda shoppers when I was a kid so that’s all I knew growing up. Plus, Asda is literally now down the road from our home.

we had a discussion about this at work and I was shocked I was the only one who went to Asda majority of the time. (Everyone else was Aldi or M&S or Tesco.)

so, for the last few months I’ve been driving that bit further and trying Tesco. So far, so good. No complaints and I don’t find it any cheaper or more expensive than Asda. Quality seems much the same too.

what about everyone else?

I'm a long time ASDA shopper. In fact I worked there many years ago !
I still think it's the best value and good quality. I also use Lidl, although it's prices have crept up.

We've had a weekly Tesco delivery since the pandemic and generally manage to get everything without needing top up shops. It's OK, though I occasionally go real life shopping in Aldi and feel annoyed at the money I'd save if we shopped there instead. But I couldn't face doing a full shop in person ever again, for 5 people and with no car.

Waitrose delivery around 3-4 times a month depending. Asda top ups because it’s local and I don’t drive. M&S for fruit and veggie sweets and bakery items when I do my mum’s shopping occasionally. I had to use Tesco on holiday recently and survived. It was a very small store for a non-express/metro but we got what we needed. I’m addicted to Waitrose roasted red pepper hummus though and won’t eat anybody else’s unless an emergency. My need for that dictates how often I order a delivery. Before Covid I shopped weekly at Tesco and loved it. Waitrose put me on their priority list due to being extremely clinically vulnerable whereas Tesco and Asda were shit so Covid made a Waitrose shopper out of me. Asda fruit and veg isn’t great but we go there for things like chocolate, my mum’s coffees, milk and butter if I’ve run out and the veggie marshmallows ds loves. I use a lot of Waitrose essentials range and the staff on deliveries tend to be the same ones and they are always so friendly and helpful. Love a Waitrose shop day! Asda is bloody expensive these days.

Waitrose for main bits, M&S and local Friday market for fruit and veg, country store for cat food.

Yes it's expensive, but quality is better, and it's lasts longer, so less waste.

Tesco. I know the aisles like the back of my hand

Lollipop81 · 21/08/2025 18:17

Asda and aldi

littleblueenvelope · 21/08/2025 18:19

Did a Waitrose online shop! The deals are great and didn’t work out that much more expensive than Aldi, and the quality is much better!

GiveDogBone · 21/08/2025 18:19

Wherever is nearest. Which happens to be Sainsbury’s with my current house, it wa Tesco’s at my last.

Blarn · 21/08/2025 18:20

Ocado or Sainsburys. But I'm getting g less and less impressed by ocado because of the poor quality of M& S food. I shop there as I want better quality. I'm considering trying Waitrose deliveries instead.

restingbitchface30 · 21/08/2025 18:22

Big shop Lidl, top ups coop because it’s at the top of my road. I used to do C&C from tesco but they just got awful with dates and one week completely forgot to do half my shop. Lidl is ok, I just wish they had a bit more variety but I do love that they do different countries each week.

Jennalong · 21/08/2025 18:26

Sainsbury's for most of our shopping , M&S couple of times a month , Waitrose maybe twice every 3 months or so . Asda rarely , Tesco never .

pestowithwalnuts · 21/08/2025 18:32

Sainsbury weekly delivery
M&S for a few treats when I'm in town

ginasevern · 21/08/2025 18:38

I buy different things in different places. Usually Morrisons, Asda or Waitrose and sometimes M &S. Can't say I've ever got on with Lidl though.

Justnevergetsthere · 21/08/2025 18:51

Lidl for most of the shop, and Tesco for fresh fruit and veg and some branded items like coffee, Ariel liquid etc.

SecretNameforMN · 21/08/2025 19:07

I have a weekly delivery from Sainsbury because they charge only £2 for a lunchtime delivery. If I could get up earlier it would be £1.

Every few weeks I have to fork out a couple more quid for an Asda delivery, because they stock certain things that Sainsbury's dont.

I only shop in person in Iceland, and all I buy in there are prawns and salad!

Chinsupmeloves · 21/08/2025 19:10

Aldi most weeks but it's down to locality of other supermarkets for others. Sometimes a click and collect from Tesco, local pop in is Sainsbury's. Asda is miles away so rarely, though I would like one nearer. Xx

Mere1 · 21/08/2025 19:32

Ocado and Lidl, with occasional quick visits to One Stop.

cornflakecrunchie · 21/08/2025 20:06

Tesco online, for donkeys' years.
Can't be bothered going anywhere else & am a food snob so wouldn't do Aldi or Lidl! ;-)

Nifty50something · 21/08/2025 20:10

Costco and Waitrose

BlackBeltInOrigami · 21/08/2025 20:50

My nearest supermarket is Asda, but it’s gone downhill these last couple of years. Less staff, decreased range, shelves empty, so find myself having to go elsewhere to fill the gaps.

Dr13Hadley · 21/08/2025 21:19

We get an Ocado delivery weekly and I do top up shops in either Aldi or Tesco. Went to Sainsbury’s today as I needed to go to the Boots nearby and it was awful; store was dirty, hardly any staff about, clothes everywhere in the TU section and half the shelves were empty. We always used to shop at Sainsbury’s and I’ve remembered now why we stopped!

vickylou78 · 21/08/2025 21:38

Tesco - because it wins hands down for delivery. Lots of delivery slots, hardly any substitutes, always on time, can get the whole shop, competitive prices and food is good and fresh.

PurpleYarnivore · 21/08/2025 21:38

I do my main shop every Monday at either Aldi or Lidl - prefer Aldi but like the fresh bread in Lidl . Then a delivery from Waitrose every Friday with the weekend food , I have a delivery pass.
I tend to pop to Marks and Spencer once a week as well , some things are cheaper there than anywhere else , their tuna in spring water only £2.50 for 4 cans much cheaper than Aldi even . never shop in Morrisons or Tesco and only go to Asda as the dentist is attached to it so once every 6 months .

cruisingqueen · 21/08/2025 21:43

Funnily enough I received a survey from JL about this in my email today.

Moreteaandchocolate · 21/08/2025 21:43

Weekly big shop in Aldi with Tesco top ups.
