Where do you food shop?

Lighthearted thread just genuinely wondering where the majority of people do their food shopping & why?

we’re a family of 3 (myself, DH & DS) and for years we’re longtime Asda shoppers. Mainly because, I think, my parents were Asda shoppers when I was a kid so that’s all I knew growing up. Plus, Asda is literally now down the road from our home.

we had a discussion about this at work and I was shocked I was the only one who went to Asda majority of the time. (Everyone else was Aldi or M&S or Tesco.)

so, for the last few months I’ve been driving that bit further and trying Tesco. So far, so good. No complaints and I don’t find it any cheaper or more expensive than Asda. Quality seems much the same too.

what about everyone else?

Morrisons as its nearby and I know where everything is. Those are the sole reasons. I find it so daunting to walk in to a different supermarket and back and forthing not knowing where the beans are or why the batteries are next to the body washes!

Maybeitsmable · 20/08/2025 20:45

Just-eat.co.uk 🤣

DiordreBarlow · 20/08/2025 20:46

I stopped shopping in Asda because their fruit and veg is rarely British. Onions from New Zealand and mushrooms from Poland.

Katherineryan1986 · 20/08/2025 20:48

Mostly Morrisons (as it’s nearest) a few times a month to Waitrose if we fancy a more leisurely amble round the store. Big stuff like loo roll, kitchen roll, wine we go to Costco.

AdoraBell · 20/08/2025 20:49

Online Waitrose as I spend less money. Today we went to Tesco as we’re in town.

B0D · 20/08/2025 20:51

Sainsbury’s mostly. But I go fairly frequently to Lidl e en though it’s further. I also get veg from the local street market and odd bits in Waitrose

Bitzee · 20/08/2025 20:51

Waitrose and Sainsburys. Sometimes M&S. My closest supermarkets are actually Asda and Whole Foods but I find one grim and the other a rip off so avoid both.

DaveWatts · 20/08/2025 20:52

Aldi for big shops weekly. Sometimes supplemented by m&s, Sainsbury's, Waitrose, coop, farm ahops or local ethnic shops. Meat, wine, coffee, beer, wholefoods all ordered online from various places. Occasionally fill the freezer from Costco.

reluctantbrit · 20/08/2025 20:52

Main shop is Waitrose as it is the nearest one.

Depending what I am up to I also go to Lidl, Tesco and Sainsbury, a bit of M&S if I need to get something while at work.

Asda, Aldi and Morrison are both over 30 minutes away so pointless to drive if I have plenty of other shops around me.

Plastictreees · 20/08/2025 20:53

Mainly Sainsbury’s, M&S and Morrisons. It used to be Waitrose but we no longer have one nearby.

missrabbit1990 · 20/08/2025 20:53

Asda is shit lately. They cancelled an online order of mine with zero explanation. I go to Aldi weekly, Morrisons monthly to get those bits and bobs Aldi doesn’t stock.

Tinytigertail · 20/08/2025 20:54

Delivery from Tesco with Waitrose for top ups and bits I don't like/can't get on Tesco

smallsilvercloud · 20/08/2025 20:55

Lidl or Tesco, Sainsbury’s prices are too expensive now so only small shops occasionally, m&s for occasional treat/christmas
I avoid Asda, it’s not well stocked, bare shelves, often can’t get what I want.

SquirrelFan · 20/08/2025 21:00

Sainsbury's. We get a delivery once a week. They're very reliable and quite often have good Nectar prices on our regular items. They're not very exciting, though, so we buy occasional snacky things from M&S.

luckysdadsway · 20/08/2025 21:00

Ocado!

Offer the best delivery slots and give a real time update on what time they will deliver
Send free gifts
Still deliver in carrier bags and refund you for them if you give them back to the driver
Always great customer service

EveryDayisFriday · 20/08/2025 21:03

Lidl mainly. Other bits from B&M, Costco and a Butcher wholesaler.

PrioritisePleasure24 · 20/08/2025 21:04

Used to be Asda then Aldi cos it was so cheap. But as prices rose it suddenly wasn’t the bargain it was. Completely flipped to Ocado delivery. We had some vouchers/offers and then never left. A lot of basics are competitive from Ocado/M&S. we don’t buy high end or organic. The food quality is great and rarely subs.

The drivers are pretty punctual and friendly. Food is in carrier bags which you give back each week for recycling. Oh and price match Tesco which is a bit 🤷‍♀️

Eta: We have a very expensive coop v close if needed, i pick up some bits in Lidl ( nuts and seeds for example) when visiting family close to one.

Needmorelego · 20/08/2025 21:08

Iceland mostly as their home delivery service is excellent.
Does sometimes work out more expensive than if I went to Aldi/Lidl because a lot of products are name brands but for me it's convenience and reliability that's more important.

Alwayssnacking · 20/08/2025 21:12

Sainsbury's. It's the closest supermarket but I actually get it delivered so not sure why. I have no complaints though, usually have what I wants and items and well within date.

cannyvalley · 20/08/2025 21:14

Lidl for big shop , and then Asda for few bits I can’t get at Lidl (vegetarian sausages etc) … Asda is on the way back from Lidl, so it’s not a bother.

In really like Lidl. I used to like Aldi but I find their fruit and veg is a bit naff these days.

I recently bought fruit from M&S and it was delicious. If I was rich I would probably shop there for all fresh stuff. Alas, I am not.

Rasell · 20/08/2025 21:14

Mainly tesco. Click & collect is so useful and the points are amazing! Have used them for many a day out to zoos, theme parks, cinema and more. Waitrose & m&s for bits and bobs. They're the closest ones to me but would travel to tesco cos I'm such a points fan!

ElizaMulvil · 20/08/2025 21:19

Coop own brands/members offers really cheap. Plus gave £10k to Foodbank!

M&S fruit is brilliant. I made the mistake of giving my baby some melon from there and now he rejects anything other than M&S melon. I have created a middle class monster!

FurForksSake · 20/08/2025 21:22

I had an m&s nectarine earlier and it was the juiciest most delicious thing. It was wondrous.

Ddakji · 20/08/2025 21:26

Always been near a Sainsbury’s so that’s been the main one for at least 30 years. I work close to 2 branches of Waitrose so I pop in there during the week. And there are a couple of branches of M&S not too far so get some nuts and bobs there.

No Asda or Tesco that close.
