Where do you food shop?

Lighthearted thread just genuinely wondering where the majority of people do their food shopping & why?

we’re a family of 3 (myself, DH & DS) and for years we’re longtime Asda shoppers. Mainly because, I think, my parents were Asda shoppers when I was a kid so that’s all I knew growing up. Plus, Asda is literally now down the road from our home.

we had a discussion about this at work and I was shocked I was the only one who went to Asda majority of the time. (Everyone else was Aldi or M&S or Tesco.)

so, for the last few months I’ve been driving that bit further and trying Tesco. So far, so good. No complaints and I don’t find it any cheaper or more expensive than Asda. Quality seems much the same too.

what about everyone else?

Tesco for household goods, tinned goods, tea, coffee, wine
M&S for fresh food, veg, bread
Waitrose delivery once or twice a month as a change from M&S
Farm shop for meat

BrillantBriony · 20/08/2025 21:56

I have a farm shop within walking distance; and their fields are fully stocked so getting local home grown organic fruit and veg at the moment; sweetcorn, amazing peppers, courgettes etc… the lovely weather has given them a bumper crop so I’m really utilising this as local produce gets pretty bland by January. I prefer buying DH’s meat from the farm shop but he will often stop off at a local butchers and grab something. I have family by the coast so when I visit I bulk buy fresh fish. Otherwise, Waitrose and Asda are my two nearest supermarkets. I love Planet Organic in Chiswick as I can get a good range of gluten free, refined sugar free, yeast free products.

DelilahBucket · 20/08/2025 21:56

Ocado mostly with any top ups at Aldi and Morrisons as they are nearest to where we live.

Neena86 · 20/08/2025 21:58

Sainsbury's because I work there and get a discount 😅

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 20/08/2025 22:00

I don’t stick to one place and get bits and bobs from everywhere except Sainsbury’s which is miles away and ditto Lidl and we don’t have Waitrose in the area. I miss it from where I used to live

Sainsbury’s.
now and again Tesco. If I feel like a treat Marks or Waitrose if I am near one

FlatErica · 20/08/2025 22:17

Borough Market, M&S, Tesco, the corner shop, Waitrose and Earth, in that order. I don’t think I’m typical but I am at least consistent.

OtherS · 20/08/2025 22:18

Waitrose mostly for little bits as it's a 10 minute walk. I have to go past M&S a couple of doors down, but they don't give free coffee! Household or heavy stuff either big Waitrose or Tesco. All my fresh meat comes from the butcher, and veg usually from farm shop. I also put in online orders to bulk buy things like lentils and rice as the type I want isn't usually available in shops.

Derbee · 20/08/2025 22:19

Gousto 5 days a week, and Aldi for all other food.

mamagogo1 · 20/08/2025 22:19

Lidl, it’s the closest, 5 minutes walk and have to pass it every time I drive my car

mintydoggyv · 20/08/2025 22:26

Tesco or Sainsbury's, no Asda near us like miles away , the odd bit from Co op next door nearly but costly

80smonster · 20/08/2025 22:28

Big shop at Sainsbos, fill in bits from M&S and Waitrose.

Ezzalouxoxo · 20/08/2025 22:30

I shop for essentials at Aldi, things like pasta, meat, milk bread etc and some extra bits like off brand pasta n sauce, drinks etc and anything else I don’t find in there or don’t like the quality of I get from Asda. I make sure to use the Asda app too as there’s coupons all the time and you get points to use for coupons

DeirdreChambersWhatACoincidence · 20/08/2025 22:31

Ocado for the bulk stuff like flour and potatoes etc that I can't carry.
Lidl for the smaller bits.

onlymethen · 20/08/2025 22:32

Aldi, we have an allotment that helps with fruit and veg, cook from scratch as retired and have the time. I did pop into Sainsbury’s lately for their wine offer and found myself filling the trolley with delights I didn’t need and that weren’t that healthy but we did enjoy the food as treats.

onlymethen · 20/08/2025 22:34

Hate our Asda, they keep the lights low and the heating off, completely dismal experience.

ExitPursuedByABare · 20/08/2025 22:36

Tesco.

Sainsbury’s if I’m driving past.

Hayley1256 · 20/08/2025 22:39

Ocado, Sainsburys, Aldi and Home Bargains (for cleaning stuff and toiletries)

GreenFlag · 20/08/2025 22:47

Waitrose, M&S, Tesco. Also local butcher, fishmonger, bakery, greengrocer and cheesemongers

SockQueen · 20/08/2025 22:49

Mainly Ocado, with meat from the local butcher. Top-up bits mostly from Asda as it's our local.

pizzaHeart · 20/08/2025 22:55

In no particular order: Aldi, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Waitrose, Coop, M&S
I usually check prices online beforehand.

fitflopqueen · 21/08/2025 00:07

Aldi for a weekly main shop then swing by Tesco on way home for bread if needed. Use local market and butchers too. Now there is only two of us at home we add in the odd Waitrose and M&S shop without thinking too much about the cost. I find Morrisons quite expensive locally and the Coop is just for last minute essentials if passing

Rubyupbeat · 21/08/2025 00:12

I get food delivery. Monday is Ocado and Friday is Sainsbury.
I can't get out just now, I can't drive, so the 2 shops a week are great!
