Laundry combination for lasting smell and compliments?

ForFunnyMember · 15/08/2025 16:01

Hi all,
Was just wondering what does everyone use for a long lasting and well complimented and noticed fresh laundry smell to their clothes, bedding towels etc? My routine gets heavily complimented and have gotten friends and family and colleagues onto at least parts of my routine depending on what they liked.
I'll go first:

Detergent: Persil colour protect (liquid) for coloured clothes. Surf tropical Lily (liquid) or sometimes Ariel original liquid for bedding towels etc with scoop of oxi any brand.

Softener: Lenor outdoorable - spring awakening
Scent beads: Lenor Spring awakening (only for clothes, sometimes towels, doesn't last long on my bedding and find it expensive enough as it is)

I dry everything on the maiden inside (sometimes dry my sheets outside) but drying clothes outside takes any smell out for me unless it's super sunny and warm.

oh and please keep it on topic... I am aware of the chemicals, luckily no one in my family has allergies. So if you don't like scented laundry, this one is not for you. Thanks.

tell me your go-to!

I know right?

In my almost 41 years of life, I can honestly say I've never once complimented anyone on their laundry routine!

Neither have I, in over 60 years of life. It's just so...utterly trivial. Can you imagine a man asking other people about their favourite laundry smells?

SirChenjins · 17/08/2025 15:25

In my late fifties year I have now reached the age where the field that I used to grow fucks in the shape of caring whether randoms on the internet like fabric softener or think laundry threads are trivial is completely and utterly barren.

Look, if you can’t afford nice things, that’s fine. But others can. Don’t dress up your opposition through scents or anything else when it’s clear you’re bitter you’ve not got the money to spend.

It's not even that expensive? Then again, my opinion of what's pricey nowadays us completely skewed by Instagram. I'm now content to buy Purdy & Fig despite bloody knowing it doesn't clean anything at all, but it smells fabulous.

It’s fabric softener, not Chanel No. 5.
Still, if it makes you happy 🤷🏻‍♀️
Please don’t accuse other posters of being bitter, though, it’s just too ludicrous.

Someone coming in a house and saying they like the smell of the drying washing is not "complimenting someone on their laundry routine" it's just saying they like a smell. It's not that deep. Certainly not worth sneering about.

GenieGenealogy · 17/08/2025 18:43

Some of the people on here are a washing powder company's dream.

"Does your washing smell as fresh as it did when you put it away 3 months ago"?

Normal people - never thought about it, who cares.
MN laundry obsessives - eeeek! no it doesn't! Better spend £10 on scent boosting plastic things!

"Does your regular washing powder kill 99.999999% of BACTERIA???"

Normal people - meh, bacteria are everywhere, if it's clean that's all that matters.
MN Laundry Obsessives - ooooh that's SUCH a concern, I better add yet another product into my routine!

I think the main problem is that the laundry companies have convinced a large number of people that fresh/clean means highly scented. If something is not highly scented, it is therefore not clean. Which is clearly bonkers but there you go.

Ecover sandalwood is decent.

To me it’s the same as anything

I could get clean with unscented soap but I would rather have a nice scent. I love perfume and scent in any form so of course I choose the laundry stuff that smells nice to me rather than an unscented one
other people prefer unscented antiperspirant

I use the dettol stuff for sweaty armpit gym clothes and because I’m immunocompromised

I don’t really care what other people use if they want unscented but people seem to have a lot to say if someone wants a particular laundry scent

Am also missing the point of this thread but I don’t think you should use softener on your towels as it reduces their efficacy.

I've been using it on my towels for many decades, and they dry me just fine.

However I certainly don't use any highly scented ones. Those I use barely have any scent, and not enough for anyone to be able to smell it on my clothing - which is dried outside on the line all year around anyway.

I really don't get why anyone wants the artificial smell of chemicals on their linens.

SouthernNights59 · 17/08/2025 22:54

Arraminta · 16/08/2025 09:12

Hard agree. Far too many people overload their washing machines, only wash at bloody 20 degrees FFS and use inferior laundry products. The resulting aroma of fusty biscuits on all their clothes is highly unpleasant.

Some of us live in countries where it is common to wash everything in cold water, and I can assure you that our clothes do not have an "aroma of fusty biscuits".

We even have notifications on TV suggesting we wash our clothes less and use cold water - shock, horror!!

As for all this nonsense about the "strong smell" of fabric conditioner, it is possible to get some with very little scent.

Peak mumsnet post btw. You’ve managed to rile a load of miserable sods up over “checks notes” laundry smells.

I love smelling clean laundry, better than that slightly mildewy/fusty smell that’s so prevalent in public, going by this thread I can see why.

I personally use daz powder and yellow lenor. I also get told I smell nice. Apparently that means I’ve failed in life according to this thread 🤣

I know, it's hilarious what people can manage to get their knickers in a twist over.

DelafieldDiary · 18/08/2025 06:58

Scent boosters? Scent beads? Goodness, modern humans are all a bit silly aren’t they?!

DelafieldDiary · 18/08/2025 07:22

When people obsess about laundry, wash everything after one use, think ‘sanitiser’ is needed for pre washing etc, I assume they probably don’t work and definitely don’t have much else going on with their lives.

It’s just all part of people falling for marketing and over consumption of unnecessary products that are also full of chemicals and crap.

Washing just needs to be clean doesn’t it? 🤦‍♀️

Agreed, people should really get a proper hobby, laundry isn’t it.

doodleschnoodle · 18/08/2025 07:36

Ladies, we are all posting about laundry at 7.30 am on an online forum, I don’t think anyone should be on their high horse about other people’s hobbies or how they spend their time 😂

Winteriscoming80 · 18/08/2025 07:37

Bloody hell the op clearly stated that this thread was for people who like nice smelling clothes!
you didn’t have to read or comment..that’s just bitchy.

I cannot believe how many pp’s don’t like smelling clean.
I’m on your team op,i like nice smelling clothes!

So if you don't like scented laundry, this one is not for you. Thanks

Irrelevant of allergies, having your clothes smell so strongly of scent that people around you are aware of it and comment at all is really anti social, for everyone who thinks it’s great there’s probably 10 people heaving because it makes them feel queasy. Please don’t encourage this. Thanks

I an often gagging as one of my neighbours line dries her washing and must put a tonne of fabric softener in each load. You can smell it a mile off.

It doesn't make you any more clean!!

GenieGenealogy · 18/08/2025 07:51

You have fallen for the marketing that clean = artificially scented laundry products.

midlifeattheoasis · 18/08/2025 07:54

I’ve just discovered the new Surf in the clear bottles (the pink one), the fragrance is subtle but lovely.

I cant stand the overbearing fragrance of laundry.

What is the spray crease release that some of you have mentioned ?

What is so wrong about projecting a nice fresh smell into the world I seriously don't get it. Most people out and about smell of fresh laundry or a lovely scent they have put on. Which is not offending anyone, I would rather project a bit of a fresh smell around me either from fresh laundry or a fragrance than not.

Also I am not encouraging anyone to do anything. I was merely sharing what I do and asking people that like a fresh smell on their garments what they use to get it to smell fresh.

Thank you for interacting with the post though.

I would hate the smell of laundry to clash with my scent. I prefer the smell of outdoor dried clothes (just low scented washing powder, no conditioner)

saveforthat · 18/08/2025 08:47

There is nothing in the whole (laundry routine) world that beats hanging out your washing on a sunny windy day and bringing it in smelling of the fresh outdoors (especially bedding). That's my laundry routine.

I was that poster and I live in the UK. I was alluding to when people wash bedding and towels at only 20 degrees. It cannot get them properly clean, especially when they overfill the washing machine too.

dahliadream · 18/08/2025 09:27

I love nice smelling laundry and I use Tallow and Ash. Some of it is too strong but Little Miracle is so lovely.
