Laundry combination for lasting smell and compliments?

ForFunnyMember · 15/08/2025 16:01

Hi all,
Was just wondering what does everyone use for a long lasting and well complimented and noticed fresh laundry smell to their clothes, bedding towels etc? My routine gets heavily complimented and have gotten friends and family and colleagues onto at least parts of my routine depending on what they liked.
I'll go first:

Detergent: Persil colour protect (liquid) for coloured clothes. Surf tropical Lily (liquid) or sometimes Ariel original liquid for bedding towels etc with scoop of oxi any brand.

Softener: Lenor outdoorable - spring awakening
Scent beads: Lenor Spring awakening (only for clothes, sometimes towels, doesn't last long on my bedding and find it expensive enough as it is)

I dry everything on the maiden inside (sometimes dry my sheets outside) but drying clothes outside takes any smell out for me unless it's super sunny and warm.

oh and please keep it on topic... I am aware of the chemicals, luckily no one in my family has allergies. So if you don't like scented laundry, this one is not for you. Thanks.

tell me your go-to!

Maybe not what this thread is about. But I think how someone smells, including their clothes, is incredibly evocative and personal. Usually though a personal choice of fragrance and toiletries. I don't think I've ever sniffed fresh laundry and thought of a person. Quite the opposite, Its like rinsing them away.

My dad used Aramis. Very 1970s but is now quite the thing amongst teenagers again. It makes me smile when I smell it.

I gave my friend a book and she immediately sniffed it, I was Confused and she said “everything from your house always smells so good”

Bearlady · 15/08/2025 22:39

I miss the Asda Golden Orchard fabric conditioner and haven't found an alternative yet.Lenor used to do a Febreze version in a green bottle and that smelt nice too.
Our towels are good quality Egyptian cotton which are fine with any products. My family and I like having scented laundry which I usually dry outside.
I do use an Eco egg most of the time.
Each to their own regarding washing with and how not a bad topic OP x

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 15/08/2025 22:41

I want my laundry to smell neutral so you can smell my expensive perfume!

What is so wrong about projecting a nice fresh smell into the world I seriously don't get it. Most people out and about smell of fresh laundry or a lovely scent they have put on. Which is not offending anyone, I would rather project a bit of a fresh smell around me either from fresh laundry or a fragrance than not.

Also I am not encouraging anyone to do anything. I was merely sharing what I do and asking people that like a fresh smell on their garments what they use to get it to smell fresh.

Thank you for interacting with the post though.

"which is not offending anyone". You're wrong there, I'm afraid. There are many people, such as myself, who hate smells and feel ill if we cannot escape them. It is extremely antisocial to go into enclosed spaces such as trains or restaurants smelling of anything. Whether you like the smell or not is irrelevant. You should not inflict smells on other people. It's inconsiderate.

Fabric conditioner clogs your machine !

animal (beef) fat will do that, which is one of the ingredients

So if you don't like scented laundry, this one is not for you. Thanks

Irrelevant of allergies, having your clothes smell so strongly of scent that people around you are aware of it and comment at all is really anti social, for everyone who thinks it’s great there’s probably 10 people heaving because it makes them feel queasy. Please don’t encourage this. Thanks

If we are talking anti social stinky smells maybe we should look at banning dogs, smoking and macdonalds before laundry detergent

Exactly. The world is full of smells - some you might like, others you might not.

PuppyMonkey · 15/08/2025 22:52

I'm a Fairy fan but not the silly scent boosters, I can’t abide some of the others, Persil makes me heave. I quite like those laundry detergents tbh. This is a great thread.Grin

CalzoneOnLegs · 15/08/2025 22:53

The name ‘Tallow and Ash’ conjures up an image of a stinking Victorian midden to me. What sort of marketing genius thought that one up ? Still, people seem to be sheeping for it 🤷🏻‍♀️

wherethewildrosesgrow · 15/08/2025 22:53

I use Tallow&Ash (date night).
I find it’s the only scent that can last more than one day on bedding, I have a heavy sweater in the household, due to a medical condition.
You can smell it as you pass the bedroom door.
Its a bit expensive, I buy it when it’s on offer at Tesco

Arraminta · 15/08/2025 22:54

LondonPapa · 15/08/2025 17:03

Tallow + Ash. All you need.

I know it smells glorious, but does it actually get your whites properly white?

MrsBurt · 15/08/2025 22:58

The comfort botanicals fabric softener smells really strong and seems to last ages!

CalzoneOnLegs · 15/08/2025 22:59

LadySuzanne · 15/08/2025 18:05

Is it not a nod to the historical ingredients for soap making? Animal fat (tallow) and lye (derived from potash).

Sorry I did not see your post I have just posted very similar. What an awful brand name and worst of all it’s actually vegan so why are they using such a name that just makes you think of some sinister slaughterhouse and smouldering grates ?

Sorry was meant to quote @MadameCholetsDirtySecret

Screamingabdabz · 15/08/2025 23:02

Ugh. That disgusting stench when you but something from Vinted and it reeks of laundry crap.

I swear people have forgotten what clean clothes smell like. They smell of nothing. If your clothes are drenched in some Fairy FooFoo Flower it means they’re not clean. They're imbued with unnecessary and unpleasant chemicals.

It’s the same vomitous combo as when people use glade plug ins to ‘hide’ dog smell. Or spraying febreeze to ‘hide’ the smell of minging trainers. It doesn’t.

I’d rather forgo the unnecessary and eco disaster laundry products and have my clean clothes smell of nothing. Except my perfume when I want it.

Never has my life been so empty that I needed compliments on my laundry routine.

^ I love keeping on top of my laundry, but even I think this thread is barking

I agree with those who say wearing strongly fragranced clothes in public is anti social. A colleague had migraines triggered by other people’s over fragranced/conditioned clothes and personally I don’t want to be exposed to all those chemicals any more than needed

It's not nice
It's nor fresh

Hth....

Seriously I am not the biggest fan of fabric conditioners, pumping air fresheners, fabreeze etc but wouldn't normally comment on it
But this is ridiculous

manicpixieschemegirl · 15/08/2025 23:07

I knew you were in for a pasting, OP! This is Mumsnet where people want to slap you with an ASBO for using fabric conditioner because the slightest whiff of anything slightly scented will have them blue lighted to hospital. Imagine complaining about the smell of laundry on public transport where the usual smells are unwashed bodies and stale urine.

I use Fairy non-bio powder and almond and manuka honey softener. I also throw in Dettol laundry sanitiser in the pre-wash for towels, bedding, dog bed, etc. Personally, I don’t feel scent boosters are necessary.

Paradoes · 15/08/2025 23:09

I use lidl or aldi powder and I don't use conditioner or scented beads (mainly due to cost)

But I love when people smell of strong washing powder so 🙃 there you go !

I'm a fan of using vinegar or baking soda pre wash

Doglamp · 15/08/2025 23:12

The M&S non bio liquid smells lovely. I alternate between that and powders (persil non bio and fairy bio)
I don’t use any fabric conditioner but I do put a slosh of the dettol lavender sanitiser in for towels, bedding and sports stuff.

sleepwouldbenice · 15/08/2025 23:21

Movinghouseatlast · 15/08/2025 18:30

I've just spent £50 on Tallow and bastard Ash and can't smell a thing. I've used 3 of the samples and none of them smell of anything at all to me!

I really want something natural and eco friendly that just smells 'fresh'. I wash an awful lot of bedding and it gets very stale smelling when it's stored. I clean my machine regularly and dry outdoors.

The only thing that does it is the Fairy beads but they are so bad for the environment.

I can't believe its actually possible to waste money like this

Jamfirstest · 15/08/2025 23:24

I thought I’d taken a wrong turn somewhere and ended up on the Mrs Hinch tips forum wherever on the internet that is……

I’m highly allergic to all sorts as is dd2. Persil is the worst offender but most powders make me want to rip my skin off.

That said I’d pick laundry powder over mildew any day. Anything that doesn’t smell like mildew is a winner imo

JLou08 · 15/08/2025 23:27

I love nice smelling laundry! It's no different to enjoying a nice perfume.
Fairy non bio and Comfort Sandlewood and Honeysuckle for me. I like the Lenor Spring Awakening crease releaser but I don't find the fabric softener strong enough for my liking.

Wateringinaheatwave · 15/08/2025 23:32

Ha! Dd has an amazing nose and can often tell which family has been at our house by the smell their clothes leave behind. Def the case that some are much more distinctive than others.

i have never told them that they smell…
