Laundry combination for lasting smell and compliments?

ForFunnyMember · 15/08/2025 16:01

Hi all,
Was just wondering what does everyone use for a long lasting and well complimented and noticed fresh laundry smell to their clothes, bedding towels etc? My routine gets heavily complimented and have gotten friends and family and colleagues onto at least parts of my routine depending on what they liked.
I'll go first:

Detergent: Persil colour protect (liquid) for coloured clothes. Surf tropical Lily (liquid) or sometimes Ariel original liquid for bedding towels etc with scoop of oxi any brand.

Softener: Lenor outdoorable - spring awakening
Scent beads: Lenor Spring awakening (only for clothes, sometimes towels, doesn't last long on my bedding and find it expensive enough as it is)

I dry everything on the maiden inside (sometimes dry my sheets outside) but drying clothes outside takes any smell out for me unless it's super sunny and warm.

oh and please keep it on topic... I am aware of the chemicals, luckily no one in my family has allergies. So if you don't like scented laundry, this one is not for you. Thanks.

tell me your go-to!

in your opinion its a waste of money but in reality the person can spend their money on whatever they like it doesn't affect you in the slightest

Plenty of people have explained how it does impact them, and the environment
But your happiness tops that

Rufusroo · 17/08/2025 08:19

when I was a child (back in the Sixties) my mum washed our clothes in Tide and line dried them. If I close my eyes I can still recall the smell of the laundry drying in the sun

I did not agree with the person buying them j was responding to the rude comment from you on what is such a wate of money- people are fully entitled to spend on what they want
however to point to your comment on the environment I have read a bit on tallow and Ash ( as the comment was in repose to the perosn spending money with then)- as never heard of them before this - they are a substantial brand who sell environmental friendly products aswell as produce in the UK. so to quote your happiness tops all yes this one actually does.

I throw some bath and body works laundry detergent and/or fragrance booster in along with my regular detergent when washing bedding and towels:

They change the scents available a lot. They don’t have it on the site at the moment as it’s seasonal, but I bought up some bottles of Vanilla Bean Noel at Christmas to use through the year.

Do they ship to the uk?

If you have got limitless money then knock yourself out
And ironically others with the smell

OP, I love fresh scented laundry too, my preferences is the blue Sainsbury's softener, which has a lovely fresh scent.

Only on Mumnet have I found people who don't like nice scents, and furthermore, think their preferences should be proritised over the preferences of the person doing the laundry and wearing the clothes!

My least favorite smells are those musty smells from unscented clothes dried too slowly, but presumably some people enjoy smelling like that, and thats their choice.

“Only on Mumnet have I found people who don't like nice scents”
… erm, no. Just that everyone’s idea of a “nice scent” is not the same as yours! Have you genuinely only ever surrounded yourself with people who have exactly the same taste and smell preferences as you have in all aspects?

I don’t care how you like your clothes to smell, but I’d prefer not to smell it unless I’m up close. The idea of “projecting a nice smell out into the world” and using so many chemicals that other people can smell it from a distance, as OP claims, often makes me want to vomit if I don’t like to smell - especially on public transport etc. OP thinks this should be prioritised over other people’s choices (not to smell it)), which is exactly what you are somehow claiming is the other way round.

( I feel the same with perfume - it’s a scent for you and possibly your loved ones, not for me on the other side of the office.)

There’s a wide range of difference between musty yucky washing and intensely chemically-infused perfumed clothes. I don’t want to smell either a mile off, and my idea of “fresh” is low chemicals, a clean washing machine (not clogged with gunk from pods and gel) and line dry where possible in fresh air. Possibly a hint of detergent or residual conditioner smell when close enough.

Look, if you can’t afford nice things, that’s fine. But others can. Don’t dress up your opposition through scents or anything else when it’s clear you’re bitter you’ve not got the money to spend.

This. I wish I’d never discovered it as it’s £££ but I keep going back to buy it as nothing else cuts it now I’ve used it.

OP you have been warned!!!

I have no commercial interest in T&A btw. Wish I did though given what I spend on it 😂

Which one do you recommend? I’m thinking oud?

teksquad · 17/08/2025 10:30

I'm in the middle here. I dont get the hate for fabric softener, but I really dont see the need (or justification) for scent beads or whatever the third product is after conditioner.

I use Tesco non bio liquid and Fairy fabric conditioner, all in medium amounts and everything in a (heat pump) dryer as I have not got the time or patience with a large family and fulltime job to hang things on the line.

Nobody has ever complimented or complained but the kids say they like the smell of their bedsheets.

Why is a utility room photo in the OP? 😆

no one has limitless money but with what they have they can spend on what they want
spending it on a sustainable company that uses environmentally friendly material and manufactures in the UK therfore providing jobs in UK is a good way to spend "limitless " money

Me too 😁

It's like a weird AI post

Speenmoor · 17/08/2025 10:57

If you like scented laundry then this stuff is the way to go. You need a teaspoon in the wash and you will smell it all over the house

kifra.com/uk/category/laundry-perfume/

Speenmoor · 17/08/2025 10:59

You can buy it on eBay by the way

teksquad · 17/08/2025 11:05

the wierdest thing avout this post is the picture of the utility room with the dryer on top of the counter instead of in the obvious space underneath next to the washing machine. So weird, AI gone rogue?

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 17/08/2025 11:08

I wash my clothes in whatever detergent is cheapest at the time and then line dry. Everything smells lovely and fresh! Occasionally a few drops of essential oils in the 'softener drawer' or some Zoflora in same, if I'm washing especially stinky stuff. Other than that nothing because I don't like the artificial smells - partly because I work in a supermarket and you can smells Aisle Six (fabric softeners and 'scent boosters') from miles away.

TheLarkAscendingRose · 17/08/2025 11:08

I like the smell of ariel pods. Someone said they liked the smell of my fairy outdoorable softener when they visited. It smells peachy.

I think op means they said "What's that nice smell?" Rather than "I wish to compliment you on your laundry routine "

quickncncncnc · 17/08/2025 11:56

I was bullied at school because my clothes smelled of cigarette smoke (1990s, my mum smoked 20 a day).

Now as an adult I like it when my clothes smell of fabric conditioner and I actively look for products that have a fragrance strong enough to still be smelled after the clothes have dried. For my clothes and for my family’s.

So, thank you @ForFunnyMember, I am going to get some Surf tropical lily as another poster has recommended it also! 🌺

WinterRoad · 17/08/2025 12:47

The thing is, it's not "a nice scented laundry smell" it's a disgusting, overpowering pong.
It's really anti social to inflict it on others.

I know right?

In my almost 41 years of life, I can honestly say I've never once complimented anyone on their laundry routine!

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 17/08/2025 13:21

I buy surf tropical and the washing is hung outside as much as possible. It smells fine. I dont bother with softener or anything.

to you it is
same as some people like Chanel perfume and some don’t. You’re never going to please everyone
