Laundry combination for lasting smell and compliments?

ForFunnyMember · 15/08/2025 16:01

Hi all,
Was just wondering what does everyone use for a long lasting and well complimented and noticed fresh laundry smell to their clothes, bedding towels etc? My routine gets heavily complimented and have gotten friends and family and colleagues onto at least parts of my routine depending on what they liked.
I'll go first:

Detergent: Persil colour protect (liquid) for coloured clothes. Surf tropical Lily (liquid) or sometimes Ariel original liquid for bedding towels etc with scoop of oxi any brand.

Softener: Lenor outdoorable - spring awakening
Scent beads: Lenor Spring awakening (only for clothes, sometimes towels, doesn't last long on my bedding and find it expensive enough as it is)

I dry everything on the maiden inside (sometimes dry my sheets outside) but drying clothes outside takes any smell out for me unless it's super sunny and warm.

oh and please keep it on topic... I am aware of the chemicals, luckily no one in my family has allergies. So if you don't like scented laundry, this one is not for you. Thanks.

tell me your go-to!

I like the Lenor Outdoorable Spring fresh but only half the amount. That is enough scent for me to be not too overpowering but pleasant.I use a basic non bio powder and prefer to line dry.

I am laughing at the idea of people
complimenting your laundry routine - it really takes all sorts

Irrelevant of allergies, having your clothes smell so strongly of scent that people around you are aware of it and comment at all is really anti social, for everyone who thinks it’s great there’s probably 10 people heaving because it makes them feel queasy. Please don’t encourage this. Thanks

I couldn't agree more. I choose laundry detergent based on how faint the chemical smell is (I use Aldi powder, if you're interested) and don't use fabric conditioner ever, at all, because I can't bear the smell. If I lived in a hard water area and maybe needed it, I'd be hunting high and low for an unfragranced one.

I line dry clothes outdoors as I love the scent of clothes dried that way. So fresh and lovely.

I'm currently suffering from a serious eye infection which ,I kid you not, is made unbearable by 'scent'. Sat next to a woman in a waiting area who had that faux 'fresh laundry' (aka too many chemicals) smell and by the time I was called my eyes were streaming... My laundry smells fresh because it's washed properly in the least scented powder I can buy (powder smells less than liquids) without any softener (unnecessary) or dryer sheets! I'd rather someone complimented me on my shoes than how artificial I smelt!

What is so wrong about projecting a nice fresh smell into the world I seriously don't get it. Most people out and about smell of fresh laundry or a lovely scent they have put on. Which is not offending anyone, I would rather project a bit of a fresh smell around me either from fresh laundry or a fragrance than not.

Also I am not encouraging anyone to do anything. I was merely sharing what I do and asking people that like a fresh smell on their garments what they use to get it to smell fresh.

Thank you for interacting with the post though.

A well complimented laundry smell?
Is that even thing?

My go to, is wash with a pod, add a cap of comfort , hang and dry.

I always immediately think that people who massively and artificially over-scent their clothes (and homes, cars etc...) like this are trying to cover up something much worse.

But also agree that I'd rather not be known just for the pungency of a fabric conditioner!

I have family members with sensitive skin, so it's non bio laundry liquid and absolutely no fabric conditioner. Clothes dried either outside on the rotary airer or indoors on the pulley with a dehumidifier running. When dry they smell of precisely nothing except fabric.

childofthe607080s · 15/08/2025 16:53

”what’s wrong with projecting a Nice fresh smell…”

the air round here is fresh and as such it doesn’t smell of anything - your nice fresh smell isn’t the smell of clean freshness at all

and I think other people are right to warn you of the health implications

StreetStrife · 15/08/2025 16:58

My mum's laundry smells very strong: she uses lots of detergent on the shortest possible cycle, and marvels at the convenience. I find all her laundry makes me itch and doesn't actually feel clean as it's just not rinsed properly. Horses for courses.

I do exactly the same and also like Aldi powder because the smell doesn't overly linger.

LondonPapa · 15/08/2025 17:03

Tallow + Ash. All you need.

FlowersandElephants · 15/08/2025 17:04

I like persil liquid or pods, any fabric conditioner and any scent beads. Apart from lenor and I think the outdoorables stuff is awful!
I don’t understand drying inside most of the time, get it on the line as soon as the cycle is finished! Spray with crease release once it’s dry for more scent.

FloraBotticelli · 15/08/2025 17:04

I love scented laundry OP! Tbh I only ever smell it on other people when hugging them, and only close family have commented on mine when hugging me or DS. I use Surf tropical lily (same as you?) and sometimes Comfort honeysuckle & sandalwood conditioner (I don’t use it all the time as clogs up the machine and just don’t need to)

DustlandFairytaleBeginning · 15/08/2025 17:07

Scent beads have microplastics in them that you are putting directly into the water- the treatment plants can't get them out agaihn. Please don't use them- its really not necessary when so many other things make laundry smell lovely!

Comefromaway · 15/08/2025 17:08

I have some quite expensive clothes that I want to last so I never use fabric conditioner. I use fairy gel or liquid for most clothes & a specialist wool/silk liquid for the rest.

scented washing powders & liquids smell artificial and sickly.

The only thing I occasionally use is a decreasing spray that smells like Tom Ford! I kid you not! I spray dry clean only clothes with neat vodka to neutralise bacteria & odours then use this spray to refresh them/help the creases drop out v

🤢 I definitely don’t recommend them, very highly scented and, even at quarter dose, overpowering and unpleasant.
I use Persil non bio or Aerial, a small amount of Comfort and dry as much as possible outside.

QuitMoaning · 15/08/2025 17:17

Am also missing the point of this thread but I don’t think you should use softener on your towels as it reduces their efficacy.

Reallybadidea · 15/08/2025 17:17

I think I'd rather be Margaret Thatcher than to feel that people complimenting me on the smell of my washing represents some sort of achievement in life.

QuitMoaning · 15/08/2025 17:19

I meant Fabric conditioner not softener.
