Foods where the cheap bog standard version is better than the naice posh version

"Greek style" yoghurt is foul. It has a weird texture and tastes strange and is less nice in every way than standard plain yoghurt.

Kettle Chips just aren't as good as ordinary crisps.

Poncy houmous in tubs is never as good as the basic kind.

"Steak mince" is dry and tasteless compared with normal mince.

etc. etc.

Aldi plain crisps are so much better than branded ones! This is a good thread.

Richmond sausages.. cheap pasty yummyness. My DH totally disagrees and buys posh sausages that I hate as they have a texture. Luckily I don’t eat them much, but give me a cheap hotdog or Richmond over the farm shop ones.

Totally came on to mention Richmond sausages too!

Also - ordinary supermarket value baked beans. I find the sauce in Heinz beans too sweet and cloying, and much prefer the cheap option. I chuck in a pinch of herbs and a squidge of tomato puree. Lovely.

And give me bog-standard Nescafe over anything out of a coffee maker. Way too much faff for the eventual beverage to be worth the hassle.

Agree Greek ‘style’ yog is a waste of time but proper Greek yogurt, ie the strained variety, is much nicer than a standard natural one.

Absolutely.

mondaytosunday · 15/08/2025 14:52

Tesco finest scones are not nearly as nice as their cheaper regular range.

TheodoraCrumpet · 15/08/2025 14:59

Aldi ice creams and lollies are great. Also prefer their beans and mayonnaise to branded versions. When I go poncey I go all the way, so Stokes ketchup rather than Heinz, or artisan handmade chocolates, not Hotel Chocolat. But Moser Roth is pretty good too, and I'm a sucker for a Racer bar.

They might have all been the same person! Did you ever see them in a room together?

Hmmm thinking back on it I don't think we ever saw their faces as The Ambassador was always hidden behind a tower of Ferrero Rochet, the Milk Tray man was usually bundled up in ski gear and TMFDM only ever showed the back of his head and dapper white suit. So you could well be on to something!

Aldi or lidl magnums. The nutty ones.

Ferrero rocher ARE posh. The ambassador serves them.

Dunnes Stores own brand fake magnums. And they’re much cheaper!

The Iceland knock off Finders Cripsy Pancakes are better!! They’re £1 for four of them!! I guess there is no posh version of a crispy pancake at the end of the day though. I don’t eat them often as they give me and DH insomnia (the knock off ones) but they taste so good. The fact they give us insomnia probably means they’re awful for us, but oh well - only eat them when the kids aren’t about and only when we don’t need to sleep early.

Catsandcannedbeans · 15/08/2025 15:09

Oo also when I was veggie Morrisons used to do a knock off sage and onion veggie sausage !! So much better than Linda’s!! Now DD is veggie and I got her some the other week, she loved them! I made a point to tell her when she’s grown up to get these as they’re better and cheaper.

kim204 · 15/08/2025 15:15

We love Lidl mayo better than branded, their chocolate puddings with a runny middle are nicer than Gu and their cheap wholemeal sliced loaves are much nicer than Waitrose's cheapest wholemeal loaf.

Hotel Chocolat are not posh chocolate IMO though! That's just good branding. It's like saying Thorntons are posh. Artisan Du Chocolat are amazing properly posh chocolates. Saying that I do like a Ferrero Rocher and used to love Cadbury's until it was bought out, now not so much.

💯agree and it's the only one allowed in my house. Only eat Hellman's if I'm out and have something with chips but I'm always left a bit 🤢 at how greasy it tastes.

MirrorMirror70 · 15/08/2025 15:29

Cheap packets of noodles from the corner shop are way better than Bachelor’s supernoodles. Generally the cheapest ones plus the more Korean writing all over the packet, the tastier they are.

Totally agree with this! I hate Hotel Chocolat. Problem is my very kind (and slightly pretentious) cousins always send them to us for Christmas. I’d rather have a Freddo.

I have a good friend who gifts me a box of Hotel Chocolat every Christmas and birthday.......totally overpriced, there are so many cheaper brands I love and prefer.

Talipesmum · 15/08/2025 15:34

PiggyPigalle · 15/08/2025 14:24

Nearest Tesco is 17 miles away, I will try them next time I'm over there, as there's no egg. Hate eggy taste.

Ah they’re not Tesco specific, most places sell them, in with the yoghurts.
Sainsburys version: https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/cr%c3%a8me-caramel-milk-desserts-with-caramel-sauce-4x100g

Asda https://groceries.asda.com/product/chocolate-caramel-desserts/asda-creme-caramel-dessert/910001410710

Morrisons, Iceland, coop etc etc. Packs of 4-6, £1-£1.75 depending on how many.

It’s really difficult when it’s a gift, isn’t it! In my family it is the height of bad manners to say you don’t like a gift but it such a waste of their money. I give them to the small, locally run dog charity to raffle off as luckily they always arrive well before Christmas. And my family love dogs so it’s not like I’m just totally wasting such a lovely gift.

Last year we got a very fancy tin of biscuits made by I think it was Biscuiteers? I’d really love to tell them not to spend money on these things but they really love them so think it’s a real treat. I’d much prefer a packet of ginger nuts or rich tea

I like those cheap nasty chocolate buttons with hundreds and thousands on. Not even sure they can legally be called chocolate.

Oh home bargains sell them 89p Jazzles or Jazzies. Bottle of Sauvignon and a bag of these. Im fine.

I couldn’t eat them😂 i have to buy posh and my posh are local Edwards of Conwy🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

BCBird · 15/08/2025 17:05

The problem with posh sausages is they taste too much like meat😂. I.like a sausage with a bit of 'give". Don't question wat 'meat' it is🙄

M&S chicken soup is 😋 only 75p iirc

I can vouch for their tin of
mushroom soup too.

deeahgwitch · 15/08/2025 18:13

Like you @BunnyLake the high cocoa plain chocolate is never going to win me over a bar of ordinary milk chocolate.
And I have tried, really tried. 😀

SingtotheCat · 15/08/2025 18:14

Aldi women’s antiperspiran. In a can. Better than Mitchum nowadays.

I agree, Hotel Chocolat is hard and just not chocolately. Just a bit boring.
Sorry everyone, but I really don't like Ferrero Rocher, never have.
M&S do a nice box of dark, milk and white chocolates now, lovely mixture and the whole family's first choice.

Batchelors are horrible. I like the Maggi ones.

Omg cheap disgusting sausages are definitely my guilty food pleasure! Everything else we buy is organic/butchers/farm shop
meat wise but I hate proper sausages, the texture is too ‘mealy’ and chunky and they make me heave. The paste of a cheap
sausage is smooth!
I maybe have a couple once every 6 months, dh shakes his head when he’s cooking them for me on the bbq; they’re so full
of fat and grease that they keep setting the coals on fire 😂 everyone else refuses to eat them but they’re perfect in my eyes!!
