Foods where the cheap bog standard version is better than the naice posh version

"Greek style" yoghurt is foul. It has a weird texture and tastes strange and is less nice in every way than standard plain yoghurt.

Kettle Chips just aren't as good as ordinary crisps.

Poncy houmous in tubs is never as good as the basic kind.

"Steak mince" is dry and tasteless compared with normal mince.

etc. etc.

I like those cheap nasty chocolate buttons with hundreds and thousands on. Not even sure they can legally be called chocolate.

I think they're called Jazz drops. I love the white "chocolate" ones.

DiscoBeat · 15/08/2025 13:41

The Winiaru mayo in the Polish section is lovely. Souvh nicer than Hellmans and cheaper. - I buy half a dozen jars when they're on offer

The cheap crème caramel desserts that are about £1 for 4 are absolutely delicious and I sometimes prefer them to the proper, made with cream and custard and burnt sugar fancy creme caramel puds that are 3-4 times the price. I do like those too, but there’s something so brilliant about the basic ones. Totally reliable.

Do you mean these? I used to make them often.

oooo interesting. I used to like Kettle chips as a treat but have absolutely loathed them the last few times I bought them (agree, Walkers much better). I wonder if they have changed the recipe? Way too oily.

manicpixieschemegirl · 15/08/2025 13:46

A McDonald’s cheeseburger is much better than those monstrous “artisan” ones. I don’t need a 5 inch thick burger on a huge brioche bun with 20 different toppings and sauces spilling out - it’s gross.

Aldi lasagne is better than Charlie Bighams.
Aldi Greek style yogurt is lovely, especially with fruit and honey.

LittleBitofBread · 15/08/2025 13:56

What Greek yoghurt are we talking about exactly? I thought Greek or Greek-style yoghurt was just the thick stuff? What's strained yoghurt?

Toddlerteaplease · 15/08/2025 13:58

My mum gave me some smoked salmon. Thought it was from Booths. Turned out it was Sainsbury’s value range.

Any supermarket’s basic salted tortilla chips are better than Doritos. Sainsbury’s basic ones in the orange packet were the best. Not seen them for ages.

Salad cream is better than mayonnaise.

The best mustard is the American stuff in the yellow bottle.

Sainsburys still do good tortilla chips. They come in a clear pack and are a fraction of the price of the posh ones.

FAGE is the brand you’ll see in the supermarkets for the strained Greek yoghurt, which I really like and is one of my daily sources of protein. That’s thick stuff - whipped cream consistency and has a noticeably nicer flavour.
“Greek style” yoghurts in my experience aren’t always that thick and a few I’ve tried have been the same consistency as a Muller yoghurt. These tend to be a lot cheaper for a pot. I’m not a fan of “Greek style” yoghurts.

Ok, thank you. 'strained' to me suggests thin and watery, which is the opposite of what I thought Greek yoghurt was!
I've never tried Greek style. Don't think I'll bother!

So much is personal preference

Greek ‘style’ yoghurt I don’t like at all. But actual Greek yoghurt is delicious. But it’s way more expensive.
I’m not a crisp fan but I definitely prefer artisanal styled ones over walkers which I think taste of stock cubes.

i don’t know what ‘normal mince’ is. There is 5%,10%, 20% etc fat

Normal mince is going in the butchers then choosing the bit of beef your budget allows for the recipe. Ask their advice if unsure. Then ask them to put it through their mincer while you wait. Then you know exactly what you're getting.

Oh yes, I think they are called Jazzies or Jazzles and I sometimes buy a bag if I see them.

SmurfnoffIce · 15/08/2025 14:15

Potato salad. I sometimes buy the fancy version made with whole or half new potatoes and the extra thick sauce, but I always end up thinking the bog standard 85p tub with small chunks and that mayonnaise that seems to set/clog slightly is just as satisfying.

Whereas normal mince for me is picking it up from Aldi
no local butchers, the ones that do exist are open 9-5 weekdays and way too expensive

Yes agree!

A box of Ferrero Rocher and a box of Dairy Milk. All that’s needed. No posh chocolate,

Back in my day Ferrero Rocher WAS the posh chocolate 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Nearest Tesco is 17 miles away, I will try them next time I'm over there, as there's no egg. Hate eggy taste.

Jazzies. I worked in a sweet shop back when I was a student and those were my best sellers, along with flying saucers. Which I could never understand because they taste like cardboard.

Timeforabitofpeace · 15/08/2025 14:34

I doubt any is better, but it might be the same. Sometimes, exactly the same.

Myblueclematis · 15/08/2025 14:37

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta: I worked in a newsagent in 1970-72 after school and Sunday afternoons and we had large boxes of loose chocolate buttons, smarties, coconut mushrooms and the Jazzie buttons too. My treat was a bag of 2oz. of buttons, smarties or Jazzies to eat while I walked home.

My other favourite sweet was chocolate limes but if I ate too many it made my tongue sore. 😆

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 15/08/2025 14:38

i have mentioned before my love of Ferraro Rocher. They are fabulous. However I keep getting given posh chocolate, which is nice, but I want the ambassador to spoil me, not hotel chocolat.

This just reminded me of the random rumour that did the rounds at primary school that The Ambassador, the Milk Tray man and the man from Del Monte all shared a house together.

😂😂😂That would certainly be an interesting house share.

They might have all been the same person! Did you ever see them in a room together?

Shop branded cornetto ice creams are much better than the branded version. The cheaper ones have melted chocolate inside the cone 😋
