Foods where the cheap bog standard version is better than the naice posh version

"Greek style" yoghurt is foul. It has a weird texture and tastes strange and is less nice in every way than standard plain yoghurt.

Kettle Chips just aren't as good as ordinary crisps.

Poncy houmous in tubs is never as good as the basic kind.

"Steak mince" is dry and tasteless compared with normal mince.

etc. etc.

I'm so glad there are others on MN who like their chocolate cheap! Every time we get one of those threads that go on about how Cadbury chocolate is "vile" and "tastes like palm oil" and that people have now chosen to buy 90% cocoa chocolate bars, I wish they'd send me all of their crap, delicious chocolate.

TomatoSandwiches · 15/08/2025 12:45

Sainsbury's own wheat biscuits, Weetabix has a cellulose mouth feel in comparison, unnatural.

Richmond sausages.. cheap pasty yummyness. My DH totally disagrees and buys posh sausages that I hate as they have a texture. Luckily I don’t eat them much, but give me a cheap hotdog or Richmond over the farm shop ones.

100%. Posh sausages don’t work in things like a fry/grill-up or sausage sandwiches. I even had some Tesco Finest sausages with caramelised red onion with a grill-up once. They don’t work. Some of the 100% pork ones I’ve tried are far too chewy.

BunnyLake · 15/08/2025 12:51

I have a wide range of tastes in food but I often find any food that has been ‘fancied’ up is worse than the just plain bog standard version (fancy sausages with honey and all sorts of extra flavours cannot beat a good unadorned pork banger!).

Oh I see sausages have been mentioned 🤦‍♀️

Greggs sausage rolls, over the artisan/hand-made ones.

They're just nice. I've made my peace with it Grin

This, or any normal sausage roll. The artisan ones have herbs etc that just get in the way of the sausage flavour, far too much sausagemeat for the pastry, and often a weird texture.

MistyMountainTop · 15/08/2025 12:55

We had a Higgedy quiche last night, I now know that I prefer the Sainsbury's or Waitrose ones of the same type!

Lol. I do love Swiss and Belgian chocolate but as much as I’ve tried , the high cocoa plain chocolate is never going to win me over a bar of ordinary milk chocolate.

Wonderknicks · 15/08/2025 12:58

Hotel Chocolat is vile, I just don't get it. Cadburys, on the other hand... (I know, I know but I still like it)

Sladuf1 · 15/08/2025 12:58

Doughnuts are another one for me. I don’t eat them regularly but give me a cheap jam-filled one from the supermarket any day,

Yes agree!

A box of Ferrero Rocher and a box of Dairy Milk. All that’s needed. No posh chocolate,

I agree with both of these but can I also add in Malteasers.
I did a favour for someone recently and to say thank you they brought me a box of Lindor chocolates. It was a lovely gesture and I did appreciate it...but I'd rather they'd saved a few quid and got me a box of Maltesers from Poundland instead!

NaeRolls · 15/08/2025 13:01

Plain dairy milk chocolate is better than dark chocolate.

Maraudingmarauders · 15/08/2025 13:04

Coleslaw. I want it crunchy and vinegary not cheesy and creamy and sickly.

FurForksSake · 15/08/2025 13:06

Aldi knock of ferrero rocher are very good. Better even.
Lidl mini ice creams and ice cream cones are better than any of the full price alternatives.

Lidl xtreme cola is as nice as Pepsi max.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 15/08/2025 13:12

M&S chicken soup is 😋 only 75p iirc

Agree, just try not to think what actually goes into them, though!

mickandrorty · 15/08/2025 13:16

Asda yellow label beans are surprisingly nice! cheap cream cheese tastes better than the expensive stuff. I really like the 80p fish fingers although I have never questioned the fish content. M&S £1 tomato ketchup is really good as well. Oh and iceland do knock off pringles which I think are nicer than actual pringles.

Vates · 15/08/2025 13:17

Just read the whole thread and definitely agree about coleslaw. I just get asda own that has a tangy taste and crunch instead of the posh versions. Hate the creamy versions and cheese ones.

When I used to eat meat I would always buy the cheap sausages because of the smooth texture. I stopped eating meat because of texture; gristle, sinew and bone make me feel sick.

Had to buy heinz tomato ketchup because they were out of own brand. Still 2/3 of bottle left as it was so thin compared to the one I buy (asda own).

Fruitsherbert · 15/08/2025 13:23

Aldi or lidl magnums. The nutty ones.

Ferrero rocher ARE posh. The ambassador serves them.

Empress13 · 15/08/2025 13:23

Aldi own mayo so much nicer and cheaper than Hellmans IMO

jollygreenpea · 15/08/2025 13:26

I'm another chocolate person.

I have said repeatedly get me the cheaper stuff, a bag of mars, snickers, twix, kitkat etc. rather than the expensive Hotel C or Thorntons.

Sadly they still keep wasting their money, I am grateful for the gift though, it's just I don't eat them.
We still have a couple of boxes from Christmas untouched.

beachwalkx · 15/08/2025 13:27

I love really cheap “chocolate” that isn’t even chocolate
white mice, fish and chips, jazzies, iced chocolate cups… a pick n mix full of them is the dream!

whosqueen · 15/08/2025 13:30

HarryVanderspeigle · 15/08/2025 08:53

I like those cheap nasty chocolate buttons with hundreds and thousands on. Not even sure they can legally be called chocolate.

Agree, they’re delicious.
They’re called Jazzies.

White mice, fizzy cola bottles, space raiders crisps. Cheap and delicious afternoon snack..

So much is personal preference

Greek ‘style’ yoghurt I don’t like at all. But actual Greek yoghurt is delicious. But it’s way more expensive.
I’m not a crisp fan but I definitely prefer artisanal styled ones over walkers which I think taste of stock cubes.

i don’t know what ‘normal mince’ is. There is 5%,10%, 20% etc fat
