"Greek style" yoghurt is foul. It has a weird texture and tastes strange and is less nice in every way than standard plain yoghurt.

Kettle Chips just aren't as good as ordinary crisps.

Poncy houmous in tubs is never as good as the basic kind.

"Steak mince" is dry and tasteless compared with normal mince.

etc. etc.

Branston baked beans are so, so much nicer than Heinz. Usually £2 or so for four tins in Hone Bargains.

I prefer Branston beans to Heinz totally but I also have a tin of Aldi baked beans in the cupboard and I actually quite like them. I buy the small tins of Branston in Farmfoods where they are currently 59p a tin. In Morrisons they are 70p and Waitrose 80p! 😮

i dont like the oil they use in Kettle crisps

It's gross. Walkers are way nicer. Kettle chips just taste of fat. Walkers taste of potatoes.

Yes agree!

A box of Ferrero Rocher and a box of Dairy Milk. All that’s needed. No posh chocolate,

Totally agree with this! I hate Hotel Chocolat. Problem is my very kind (and slightly pretentious) cousins always send them to us for Christmas. I’d rather have a Freddo.

Talipesmum · 15/08/2025 08:44

The cheap crème caramel desserts that are about £1 for 4 are absolutely delicious and I sometimes prefer them to the proper, made with cream and custard and burnt sugar fancy creme caramel puds that are 3-4 times the price. I do like those too, but there’s something so brilliant about the basic ones. Totally reliable.

I don't think you are supposed to eat persil.

Well actchewelley, persil is the French name for parsley, so of course you can eat it…. 😁

BlueEyedBogWitch · 15/08/2025 08:50

Any supermarket’s basic salted tortilla chips are better than Doritos. Sainsbury’s basic ones in the orange packet were the best. Not seen them for ages.

Salad cream is better than mayonnaise.

The best mustard is the American stuff in the yellow bottle.

HarryVanderspeigle · 15/08/2025 08:53

I like those cheap nasty chocolate buttons with hundreds and thousands on. Not even sure they can legally be called chocolate.

Agree Greek ‘style’ yog is a waste of time but proper Greek yogurt, ie the strained variety, is much nicer than a standard natural one.

This.

GeniuneWorkOfFart · 15/08/2025 08:54

Kettle chips are vile. Big dry mealy slabs that taste of old oil 🤢

Budget range full fat cream cheese is way nicer than actual Philadelphia.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 15/08/2025 08:59

I’d agree with the posh chocs example, except for chocolates from Friar’s of Keswick - at least the 2 lots we’ve been given - liqueur cherries and the Nut Platter,
Otherwise I’d just as soon have a box of Maltesers, or a bar of Fruit and Nut, any day.

deeahgwitch · 15/08/2025 09:13

I HATE Ferraro Rocher @FancyBiscuitsLevel
Give me Hotel Chocolat instead, any day.
They closed the one Hotel Chocolat shop we had in Dublin, the only one in the whole of Ireland, sadly.
It was a bit expensive though - €5.50 for a bar 😮

I understand. I"ve had posh chocolates but have realised my palette is far too unsophisticated to appreciate these😂

Alltheprettyseahorses · 15/08/2025 09:22

Kettle chips have really gone down the pan imo.

I'd never buy Kelloggs or Heinz, not even when they're pennies in the local Heron. Supermarket own brands tend to be much, much better.

Toilet rolls - the cheap ones, 6 double rolls for £2.39 from Aldi or Lidl, are great. Not the asda version though.

Going against the grain, I definitely think Aldi's Greek style yoghurt is the best yoghurt on the market. It's always delicious, thick and creamy when both Greek and Greek style tend to be hit-and-miss and also has the perfect consistency for using as an ingredient.

rainbowstardrops · 15/08/2025 09:26

I buy Tesco baked beans, much nicer than Heinz in my opinion.

Milliejacksonhouseforsale · 15/08/2025 12:23

Kettle chips particularly the ready salted have a disgusting oily aftertaste.

ThejoyofNC · 15/08/2025 07:23

The aldi knock off of McCoy's flame grilled steak crisps are delicious and half the price.

Love Aldi. This could describe most of its products.

LemondrizzleShark · 15/08/2025 12:27

God I don’t agree with any of these! I obviously have expensive tastes 🤣

The lentils/rice/coconut milk etc from random brands in the “ethnic” food aisle is much better and cheaper than the posh brands in the main food aisles. Going into an actual Nigerian/Chinese/Indian cash and carry is even better, but obviously you don’t get many of those in rural Devon.

BashfulClam · 15/08/2025 12:29

We’ve been trying out some supermarket own brands to offset the cost of living. Most are ok, I’m not paying £7 for a jar of coffee when the ‘finest’ version is nice for £3

WinWhenTheyreSinging · 15/08/2025 12:31

Not ‘off the shelf’, but fishfinger sandwiches are always worse for tarting up. Thick plastic white bread, butter, salt, pepper and tomato ketchup, all the way. Got to be cod fishfingers though, away with your pollock.

i have mentioned before my love of Ferraro Rocher. They are fabulous. However I keep getting given posh chocolate, which is nice, but I want the ambassador to spoil me, not hotel chocolat. I think get posters helpfully telling me about very expensive chocolates that taste just as good as forerro rocher, which is nice, but I’d still rather have the £5 box of golden balls than some £20 box that’s not as nice.

The M&S Ferraro Rocher dupe is lovely, and even cheaper

Skissors · 15/08/2025 12:37

Xmas puddings. Not necessarily the cheapest is best but mid range is better than the most expensive, which often has too much nuts and other stuff in.

Burgers 🍔, again I feel mid range price wise is better than the most expensive

AAudreyHorne · 15/08/2025 12:38

The kids tell me that the Aldi and lidl own brand strawberry cornettos are way better than actual cornettos because the strawberry sauce goes all the way down the cone and isn't just a tiny bit of sauce on the top.

TaborlinTheGreat · 15/08/2025 12:39

Disagree with almost all of these except the Jaffa cakes. Aldi's are way better. Enjoying the usual umpteen different spellings of Ferrero Rocher Grin

KitsyWitsy · 15/08/2025 12:40

Supermarket cornettos.. just seen the pp mention this too. We get the ones from Morrisons and they are much nice than actual cornetos!

Gotback · 15/08/2025 12:40

Tinned salmon over fresh any day. With salad cream, not mayo.
