How do YOU know it’s a fact though?
Well, the burden of proof is on the person making the claim. If someone says they can cast a magic spell, it's not on me to prove that they can't, it's up to them to prove that they can. Otherwise we'd have to blindly believe anything.
Hitchin's Razor: "That which can be asserted without evidence, can be dismissed without evidence.”
Nobody has ever been able to evidence the existence of magic spells. Ever. And that's a fact.
Why does it matter to you personally if somebody else that you’ll never meet in real life holds these beliefs so much to you?
It doesn't. As I said in a PP, it fascinates me. I love learning about different sub-cultures, why they think and act like they do. What leads people to identify with them.
And as much as you can learn by reading, I've found the best way to do it is to speak to the people involved. But it has to be a two-way conversation. I think it's important to challenge people on their views, rather than just nodding along. I might change their mind. They might change mine, which I'm extremely open to!
Why is it offending you so much that you feel the need to call them out on it and shame them?
It's not offending me at all, I'm not sure what's given you that impression.
I would absolutely love someone to prove that magic is real. Can you imagine? It would literally undo everything we know about the world, our history, science. It could help us understand all manner of so-far unexplained things.
I haven't shamed anyone. I've joined in a discussion on a discussion board because it's something that interests me. If someone takes a perfectly emotionless, rational statement about their hobby/belief as a personal insult, that's on them.
But it speaks to my point; if I'm wrong, why has nobody even attempted to change my mind? Why has the default response been to accuse me of shaming people?
I expect that some of you do genuinely believe that you can cast spells, and don't care what people like me think. I also believe that many of you simply want to indulge in the fantasy with like-minded people, and that's why you take it so personally when someone bursts the bubble.
I find both incredibly interesting.
