Witches - spell help

Hey, looking for some advice as in all the years of spell work I have never had this happen before.

i did a spell on the full moon, all very well intentioned, to help me save money. I lit a candle in a special place to me, set my intention, and the candle blew out quite quickly. It was near a window, so I took it to mean spell completed ie wish made.

i took the candle home and lit it again later on the lionsgate portal night to strengthen my resolve. The wax kind of dripped on to my finger and burned me a lot. I’ve never had that happen before. I looked it up and some say it’s a warning (what can it be warning me about, it’s literally just to make me save money 😂) or - very differing view - the spell needed some kind of karmic or energy payment from me, and I “paid” with the burn to add strength and resolve to the spell.

any thoughts? I’ve done this a long time and never cast bad or ill intentioned spells so I don’t know what this was about! Has someone hexed me?

blessed be x

In a woo context, of course I don't.

That’s sad. Life is so much more beautiful when you embrace its mysteries.

@IHateWasps ok wasp-hater (what’s that all about? Don’t the wasps have a right to exist too?) we don’t need your skepticism here.

I’m sorry that you don’t believe in anything at all, you are missing out on the wonderful power of the human mind and all that it can accomplish. Of course sometimes that backfires and people go down the wrong path, but when belief is channelled in the right direction it can achieve incredible things.

Let the OP have her beliefs. There is no need to be scornful and unkind about it.

Sounds awfully like this is drifting into curing cancer with the power of positive thinking.

Excellent question OP.

Because blowing out a candle and making a birthday wish is special. We can all stop if we want. But people don’t… why not, if it’s “nonsense”

My advice on saving money is to stop buying candles.

I adore mysteries and spend a lot of my spare time reading about them. There's zero mystery about spells and making wishes on birthday cake candles.

Why not get the universe to manifest you the winning euromillions numbers?

Most people stop that by the age of about 11...

The human mind is incredibly powerful (see the placebo effect), and taking time to focus on what you want and how you might make it happen, are all very valid. Using the ritual of lighting a candle and using that to help you focus, also harmless (apart from the burn 😁)

it becomes unhelpful when someone worries about a perfectly explicable event (hot wax from said candle dripping and causing a burn) being down to “magic” (someone hexing her). Then it’s bordering on mental illness.

What's bad energy?

It means you are dragging people down by being negative. Aka:

Killing the mood.
Buzzkill.
Draining to be around.
Sad sack.
Downer.
Hard work.
Turn-off.

If you can’t look up at a star and make a wish on it, that’s sad for you. Please don’t call me stupid or suggest I’m going to sign up to a pyramid scheme just because I find joy in something that you can’t. Lots of people find joy in gardening like yourself, I don’t and that’s ok ☺️

I’m not a gardener. I’m disabled so I’d struggle with my particular needs and it isn’t really my thing but I do have a gardener. I actually don’t mind wasps that much and I appreciate how incredibly important they are to the ecosystem but I’d just received my first ever sting that day hence the user name.

There’s plenty of wonder to be found in the beauty of the real world. There’s no need to make up harmful nonsense and yes your “spells” are about as logical as pyramid schemes.

Because as a species we enjoy rituals and traditions. Not because anyone actually believes that they have cast a spell or wishes come true.

I defend OP’s right to look for meaning in a ritual or ceremony or religious practice that she imbues with significance.

It is a leap to say it’s mental illness.

mumda · 14/08/2025 11:43

My advice is your candle has been made with the wrong diameter wick.
Was it from a reputable supplier?
Are they a burn once candle and then you're supposed to dispose of it in a special way?

lastminutetrip · 14/08/2025 11:45

HermioneWeasley · 14/08/2025 11:40

Because as a species we enjoy rituals and traditions. Not because anyone actually believes that they have cast a spell or wishes come true.

Of course I cannot part the sea with a spell. But can I strengthen resolve and determination in myself mentally by lighting a candle and focusing on the task. Of course. Those things work all the time. It’s simply goal setting.

You see this in 5 year plans and quarterly financial accounting.

the burn was significant to me because i do believe in bad energy and people not wanting you to have things. As perfectly evidenced here in this thread. I can’t even have my belief system when I’ve not said a bad word about anyone else’s beliefs.

OP posts:
BunniB · 14/08/2025 11:47

@HermioneWeasley I disagree. Many people retain a sense of magic in the mundane, and also in the traditions of daily life. Of course, if you wish for something far fetched (eg superpowers) then you’re not likely to see your wish fulfilled. But if you wish for something within your reach, you retain a sense of hope and excitement.

People can do a lot of good with a sense of hope and excitement. Frankly what is the point of anything, if we don’t have that?

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 14/08/2025 11:47

lastminutetrip · 14/08/2025 11:27

Sure. If you blow out the candles on a birthday cake and make a wish, is that not the same?

How about knocking on wood for luck?

Edited

Eh?

I don't do either of those things.

BloodandGlitter · 14/08/2025 11:48

Just the other day a poster was complaining about other posters mocking Christianity and saying it never happens to other religions but obviously Paganism is also fair game for mocking.

If you don't believe in a religion someone else does that's absolutely fine but you don't need to sit and be a spiteful twat about it.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 14/08/2025 11:47

Eh?

People across the world do so everyday. It is a common practise, will you accept that people blow out birthday candles and do knock on wood?

pinch punch first day of the month… Never done that?
wished someone luck on their first day at work? Never done that?

sure

Meddling in what, exactly?
The OP got burnt by candle wax. How is that meddling? It's just a minor injury.

That is very wise. It can be frightening and you can get out of your depth if you are not careful to stay educated and keep things in perspective. This happens in religions - see Extremism/Cults. Some people are inclined towards obsessive habits - yo-yo dieting, exercise, sexual fetish, drinking to excess. But most people keep things under control and just live contentedly and harmlessly minding their own business without things spiralling into personal crisis.

NapoleonsToe · 14/08/2025 11:54

Tradition. Nothing more. They're just sayings left in our language from the past.

That's in response to why do people still quote superstitious sayings.
