The autumn conscription in Russia will be the largest in nine years, The Moscow Times reports.
From 2016, when 152,000 Russians were called up in autumn, to 2022, when the number dropped to 120,000, official figures had been declining. In autumn 2023, the Kremlin announced 130,000 recruits, compared to 133,000 in 2024.
In 2025, however, the total annual figure has reached 295,000 people — the highest number in the past nine years.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the allocation of €2 billion for Ukrainian drones, stressing that if Ukraine is the first line of defense, military assistance must be increased.
According to her, this support will help Ukraine scale up and fully use its potential, while also allowing the EU to benefit from the technology. Von der Leyen added that Europe must deliver a strong and united response to Russian drone incursions along its borders.

Bloomberg reports that Russia is selling gas to China at prices significantly lower than to Europe and Türkiye, deepening its dependence on Beijing.
According to the Russian Ministry of Economy, over the next three years gas for China will cost at least 27% less than for Türkiye and several European buyers, with the gap expected to widen to 38% by 2025. The average price of exports to China is estimated at $248 per thousand cubic meters, compared with $402 for Western markets.
Having lost much of the European market, Gazprom is now relying on China, though sales there are less profitable, highlighting Moscow’s growing reliance on Beijing. Deliveries through the Power of Siberia pipeline are set to reach full capacity of 38 billion cubic meters annually in 2025, while the planned Power of Siberia 2 via Mongolia could add up to 50 billion cubic meters a year for 30 years. Expansion of the Far Eastern route is also under consideration.

🇺🇦 A clear register of Ukrainian children abducted by Russia is needed, and Ukraine is working on this together with international partners, President Zelenskyy said.
According to him, it is very difficult to find information about these children, because there are thousands of them, so Ukraine cannot cope with this task alone.
The issue was discussed at the UN General Assembly summit on the return of Ukrainian children, attended by more than 40 countries.
“Many countries, thanks to their connections, economic ties, and intelligence, will help find and fill this register with real data. This is point number one, what we agreed on. This is a question for years, unfortunately. When it comes to thousands, tens of thousands of children whom Russia hid illegally, it is very difficult to find them,” Zelenskyy said.

🇺🇸🇺🇦 The U.S. is coordinating the 5th and 6th weapons packages under the PURL initiative, President Volodymyr Zelensky said.
According to him, Belgium, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Iceland, and Luxembourg have already declared their readiness to contribute to the upcoming 5th package.
Since August, partners have funded several packages of U.S. weapons for Ukraine:
🔴1st package — $578 million from the Netherlands;
🔴2nd package — $495 million from Denmark, Norway, and Sweden;
🔴3rd package — Germany announced plans to finance it with $500 million;
🔴4th package — $500 million from Canada.
Ukraine’s goal is to secure $1 billion in PURL funding each month — Zelenskyy said this would allow the full potential of the initiative to be realized.
▪️PURL is a new mechanism created by the U.S. and NATO to supply weapons to Ukraine. Under this system, Ukraine prepares a list of priority needs, which includes the weapons most urgently required on the front. NATO allies then purchase American weapons.

The Czech analytical group Online Risk Labs reported that 286 anonymous TikTok accounts expressed support for the far-right SPD party, which currently polls third with about 13% support, and the far-left Stacilo!, which is polling just above the 5% threshold needed to enter parliament.
Both parties believe that the Czech Republic should leave NATO and the European Union.
It is noted that candidates promoted in these posts may not have been aware of it.
Parliamentary elections in the Czech Republic are scheduled for October 3–4, 2025. Recent polls show the opposition ANO party of former prime minister Andrej Babiš in the lead. The party promises higher social benefits, lower taxes, and expresses skepticism toward some EU policies.

Denmark is calling up several hundred reservists in response to drone incursions, local broadcaster TV2 reports.
The exact number of reservists has not been disclosed, but the report notes it concerns “several hundred.” They are believed to have been called up due to the situation with drones entering Danish airspace.
Earlier, Sweden and France announced they would provide Denmark with assistance in countering drones during the upcoming EU summit in Copenhagen, including radar systems and a helicopter.[ @notimagain it really does sound as if these drones were Russian and probably came from that landing ship that was in international waters nearby. ]

🇫🇮 Finnish President Alexander Stubb said he will not issue an order to immediately shoot down Russian objects in the country’s airspace.

He made the remark in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s statement on 23 September that NATO countries should shoot down Russian aircraft that violate their airspace.

October 1st marks Defenders Day in Ukraine—a day to honor and thank every defender for their courage and heroism.
This year, our defenders are addressing the world to remind everyone what Ukraine is fighting for: a safe childhood for Ukrainian children, the chance for families to stay together and not be torn apart by war, safe and peaceful land, Ukraine’s internationally recognized borders, justice for every innocent victim of this unlawful invasion—and a free, independent Europe.
THANK YOU 🇺🇦 https://t.me/United24media/35885

Germany has reported widespread drone flights over critical infrastructure, according to Bild.
Drones have been observed above a university clinic, power plants, local parliament buildings, and the refinery supplying fuel to Hamburg Airport.
The perpetrators remain unknown, but experts note similarities with incidents in Denmark, where drones previously forced airport operations to shut down.
The Bundestag is currently drafting legislation to allow the military to shoot down suspicious drones outside military facilities.

Trump called Medvedev a “stupid man” who works for Putin. He said Russia had recently issued threats, and in response he sent nuclear submarines to its shores. “I did it because he mentioned the word ‘nuclear.’ Just as a precaution. We can’t allow people to throw that word around,” Trump told US military generals and admirals.

According to Zelenskyy, the draft resolution on returning Ukrainian children will be presented this year.
The president also addressed the situation at the Zaporizhzhia NPP, which has been without power for seven days due to damage to the power grids from shelling—the longest blackout in the station’s history. “It is important that the world understands the potential consequences. We are counting on an appropriate response,” Zelenskyy emphasized.
In addition, they discussed the situation in Gaza and former President Trump’s initiative to establish peace. Zelenskyy called it “a strong initiative” and said Ukraine is ready to contribute to making the peace proposals work.

🇺🇸NATO is still determining whether Russia deliberately violated Estonian and Polish airspace, said Secretary General Mark Rutte.
He also noted that it remains unclear who is behind the drone incursions in Denmark.
“When it comes to Poland and Estonia — it’s obviously the Russians. We’re still investigating whether this was intentional or not. But even if it wasn’t — it’s reckless and unacceptable,” he said.
▪️Denmark has already faced several drone incursions — spotted over airports and military facilities, forcing temporary flight suspensions. One such incident on September 23 was described by the country as the most serious attack on its critical infrastructure.
▪️On September 19, three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets entered Estonian airspace over the Gulf of Finland without permission, staying there for a total of 12 minutes.

In Poland, authorities have detained Ukrainian citizen Volodymyr Z., whom Germany suspects of involvement in the Nord Stream gas pipeline explosions.

Again, this is really heartwarming to see the Royal Family showing their support to Ukraine and its people. The fact that Prince Harry and Princess Anne travelled to Kyiv in person to show their support would be a massive moral boost for the Ukrainians.

The US is supplying intelligence information to facilitate Ukraine's deep strikes in Russia. In addition to target coordinates, this would include other information like the location of Russian air defense assets.

The fact that Trump is considering allowing Ukraine to acquire Tomahawk cruise missiles has been widely reported. The WSJ is reporting that a variety of other deep strike weapons are also on the table, including the relatively new Barracuda missile from defense tech upstart Anduril. This is significant in part because these cost about $200k each, vs over $1m for the Tomahawks, so they could be used in much greater numbers at the same cost.

U.S. to Provide Ukraine With Intelligence for Missile Strikes Deep Inside Russia - Trump has approved sharing targeting data with Ukrainians as the administration weighs sending powerful weapons

Separately, it's been reported that 38% of Russia's oil refining capacity is off line, and they are trying to import motor gasoline from Asia, which will be slow, difficult and expensive.

This is good news surely? Apologies for my ignorance/lack of memory but did the Biden administration ever provide this type of intelligence?

This is good news surely? Apologies for my ignorance/lack of memory but did the Biden administration ever provide this type of intelligence?

It is very good news. The Biden administration only provided intelligence on Russian targets in occupied Ukrainian territory or very close to the Ukrainian border.

The location data isn't that critical for the oil refineries. They can be seen in great detail in open source or commercially available satellite surveillance data. Information on the disposition of Russian air defense units is much more valuable, as it allows Ukrainian long range drones to route around them.

I think that Trump has finally concluded that he has to help Ukraine inflict greater pain on the Russian economy to motivate Putin to end the war.

Edited to add that I strongly suspect that the US is now providing data on other high value targets besides the oil refineries. The Ukrainians recently attacked a warehouse housing thousands of Russian drones. It's unlikely that they would have known about it without US intelligence. So intel on military targets deep inside Russia is likely being provided as well.

Russia’s oil refineries have shut down nearly 40% of their capacity, The Moscow Times reports.
As of September 28, 38% of primary refining capacity—about 338,000 tons per day—was idle across the country. The combined capacity available for gasoline and diesel production fell by 6% in August and another 18% in September. This level of downtime is historically unprecedented, surpassing the August record of 23% (206,000 tons per day) and earlier records from May 2022 (196,000 tons per day) and May 2020 (164,000 tons per day).
According to statistics agency Siala, around 70% of the downtime was caused by Ukrainian drone strikes. By the end of September, Ukrainian attacks had disabled roughly a quarter of Russia’s oil refining—about 236,000 tons per day.
In September, four additional Russian refineries halted production after UAV attacks. These include Kinef in the Leningrad region, Russia’s second-largest refinery, and Rosneft’s Ryazan refinery, among the country’s top five. Kinef stopped on September 14, Ryazan on September 5, Novokuibyshev on September 20, and Gazprom’s Astrakhan gas refinery on September 22.
As a result, gasoline production in September dropped by 1 million tons, creating a domestic market deficit of up to 20% of consumption, a source told Kommersant.

On Tuesday, September 30, Odesa was hit by severe weather, receiving nearly two months’ worth of rainfall in just seven hours. The storm claimed ten lives, including one child, who drowned, and caused flooding on multiple streets while damaging municipal infrastructure.

🇪🇺 Several EU countries are blocking the idea of using qualified majority voting to speed up Ukraine’s accession, Politico reports.
France, the Netherlands, and Greece oppose the move, fearing they would lose their veto rights over candidates they consider problematic.
For these countries, the veto is seen as a key instrument of national sovereignty: Greece wants to retain the ability to stall Turkey’s accession, Bulgaria to control North Macedonia’s process, and Croatia to influence Serbia’s.
At the same time, some leaders — including Finnish President Alexander Stubb — support efforts to introduce more flexible decision-making mechanisms, especially for Ukraine.
▪️The debate over qualified majority voting arose in the context of Ukraine’s accession process and Hungary’s veto.

A new modification of the Shahed drone equipped with a night-vision camera struck a moving train in the Chernihiv region for the first time.
The first drone hit the locomotive, stopping the entire train, after which additional drones targeted other cars in the convoy. During the attack, the Shaheds also came dangerously close to Ukrainian air defense helicopters.
Despite Russian claims that fuel tanks were hit, the Chernihiv prosecutor’s office released photos showing that a grain car had been struck.

British firm MGI to send strike drones to Ukraine with a range of up to 250 km
British company MGI Engineering, founded by a former Formula 1 engineer, has announced plans to send inexpensive, medium-range strike drones to Ukraine.
The company said it will deploy SkyShark loitering munitions (kamikaze drones) in Ukraine within a few weeks. The SkyShark is a loitering munition with a warhead of 10–20 kg, a flight range of about 250 km and a maximum speed of around 450 km/h.

Two young Ukrainians who had been handed draft notices by Russian forces have been returned to Ukraine from occupied territory.
One of them received a summons at just 17 years old. Upon turning 18, he decided to flee to avoid being forced to fight against his own country.

Both are now safely on Ukrainian-controlled territory, receiving support and working on restoring their documents.

The European Commission’s plan of creating a “drone wall” on the union’s eastern border has met a tough reality in Copenhagen — opposition from EU member states without a border with Russia. European powerhouses, such as France and Germany, have expressed scepticism about the idea

I wonder if this "drone wall" was one of those ideas that sounded great as a catch phrase for the politicians to use when dealing with the media but didn't look quite so clever or acheivable when the defence and technical specialists got involved.

It's fair enough and probably achievable to harden/defend point targets such as airports and other sensitive sites against drones, but I'm not sure you could wall up the whole eastern border of the EU...the critics might be right in saying the money might be better spent elsewhere.
