Naked biker riders - has this been through your town, did it make you use your car less? ?

On the way into town yesterday and there was a bit of a hold up on the way, not unusual on a Saturday lunchtime.

As we moved along towards the town centre I realised it was the Naked Bike ride lot. Around 20-30 people biking along at a snails pace. From what we could see they were all men and all older men at that. I had no idea yesterday was our town's lucky day for this event as I don't read the local news etc.

Now, I am all for body positivity and have no problem with nudists or naturists expressing their bodily freedom but within their own spaces (nudist beaches, campsites etc).

A quick google tells me these events are a peaceful protest about the over use of cars, oil and global warming etc but surely most people are going to look at a load of naked people on bikes and go 'Ahh, my eyes, my eyes' or 'Well, that was weird' and move on with their lives, I can't see many people googling to find out why these guys were stark bollock naked and think 'Oh yes, I must use my car less'

All I saw yesterday was a group of old nude men (I didn't see any woman), one was even wearing a weird kinky looking rabbit mask. I know there are lots of people supporting these guys or saying it's really nothing to get hot under the collar about but let's be honest, surely, for some of these people it's a major kink or they are just exhibitionists who will use any old excuse to get their kit off in public. Or maybe at 52 I have just had a gut load of men and 20-30 wrinkly old over-tanned bodies riding towards me when I was just getting on with my day was enough to give my perimenopausal gut the major ick yesterday (although it even turned my dd18 stomach green and she loves wearing next to nothing!).

I’m in Colchester and this happened here too yesterday. I had no idea there was an environmental message behind it so not sure they’re getting that across effectively…

SerendipityJane · 10/08/2025 11:35

I can hear DM - on being told this news - saying "Must chafe a bit" without a pause in the needles clacking.

NamefromNowhere · 10/08/2025 11:41

I saw this a few years ago. I was on the bus with my 6-year-old DS. To be honest, I thought it was unnecessary. If I decided to cycle through town naked, I'd be arrested. So why is a big group allowed to do it? The group I saw were men and women all completely naked. Not something I want to see, or want my child to see.
If it was protesting something, then it really want clear.

Yes, it was Colchester. It was being discussed on the local FB group but no-one was discussing the environmental issues these people are supposedly protesting about. I am sure there are more productive ways of raising awareness!

Yeah I'd more more interested in fully clothed people clearing litter

SerendipityJane · 10/08/2025 11:53

Why ?

That's my gripe, they really don't appear to be pushing the actual cause, simply riding through UK towns naked isn't going to do much for their campaign imo and I can just see this becoming a magnet for exhibitionists and pervs.

A bunch of flaccid willies and bums flapping in the bike motion - yeah that's immediately going to make me leave the car at home.

Let's be honest here - it's an excuse for men to get their knobs out. They never really do move past that fascination with the fact Mother Nature gifted them a willy do they?

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 10/08/2025 12:03

I’ve seen a load of them in central London on a very hot day, and TBH all I thought was a) that they were giving everybody on very busy Piccadilly a good laugh, and b) that many of them must have ended up with sunburnt willies.

Nitgel · 10/08/2025 12:03

Just pervy blokes hiding behind a cause. I was in hastings and saw the naked cyclist there. Grim all round.

tinyspiny · 10/08/2025 12:05

They are nude because it works , it gets people talking and the issue they are protesting about gets mentioned and thought about even if it’s as an aside to the nudity . Would the OP have started a thread if they had been a big group of clothed cyclists - no so point proved . As to the actual point of whether it would make me use my car less - no .

LittleSkeletonSailor · 10/08/2025 12:07

It's gross.

Its just an excuse for pervs to be pervs.

My son was in our Town centre when they came through, he is autistic and was really freaked out by it.

But all it gets people talking about is the fact they are all naked. I doubt many people witnessing this yesterday (or any of the towns they are likely to frequent this summer) will pop on to google, find out about the reason for this naked protest and then make positive adjustments in accordance to the cause.

I support many worldwide campaigns and charities etc and none of them have to resort to nakedness to gain awareness. I can not see how this works and as I say it will simply draw perverted people to this who most probably don't give a shiny shit about the cause.

If I (or others) had witnessed a bunch of clothed people peacefully protesting yesterday, all handing out posters and literature regarding their cause then people would feel comfortable to stop them, have a nice chat and look further into this issue. Who the hell is going to want to stand there, potentially with their children in tow and chat away to a man standing there with his tackle on show? It's grim and I shy away from causes like this.

We've had it in my town too - some of them were even on the public hire bikes!!!

Well I will lay bets that they are all white, because if they weren't they'd be lynched as sex offenders off small boats.

smallglassbottle · 10/08/2025 13:41

Exhibitionists hoping for a bit of attention.

They can't get a point across without involving their genitals.

It's a key pivotal essence of their being.

Why listen to a well educated professor when an idiot with an exposed cock is on offer? I know which argument I'd take more seriously.

It's too make people feel uncomfortable more likely but so many people will defend it. Normalising it for little boys and making little girls belive it's body positivity to see men cocks unsolicited in public.

PauliesWalnuts · 10/08/2025 14:08

I’m a passionate cyclist and I hate the naked bike ride (and the monthly Critical Mass protest rides).
It’s not pretty, horrifies most people or annoys them, and doesn’t work. The only thing that will get people out of cars is either better and frequent public transport, or petrol costs going so high that people can’t afford it. I save £9.00 a day on my commute if I ride, and that goes towards a holiday. That’s my motivation, not some bloke with his cock out.

but would you have started the thread if they’d been fully clothed - no , so by doing so you have already spread the word about their cause and that is what they are aiming for . I really doubt anybody wants to see a load of unattractive genitals and if anything it would make me use my car more to get away from the area quicker .

VintageMarket · 10/08/2025 14:22

These things have been going on for years now.

Surely they're old hat and don't do any good.

Nothing makes people use cars less.

Bonbon249 · 10/08/2025 14:44

To answer the person who wondered why an individual would be arrested for riding their bike naked, I believe it would be a Public Order offence - Behavior likely to cause fear or alarm. I'm not sure how a big group of them get away with it but perhaps the police don't want to deal with their wrinkly old asses!

HostaCentral · 10/08/2025 14:58

You can go a out your business naked though. There is a naked local rambler locally. Everyone knows him, the police won't come out even if there is a complaint because he's just rambling, not deliberately causing offense. Causing offense is not against the law.

Bonjamin · 10/08/2025 15:02

The whole point of the Lady Godiva story was that no one was supposed to look at her, Geoff.
