I'm home alone with my 12 year old twins as my husband is working away and not due back until tomorrow evening. He's about 6 hours away.

Over the last few days I've had a painful boil under my boob. I saw the GP today as it doubled in size overnight. There is a red circle around it. She prescribed doxycycline (2 a day) and said to phone back if it gets worse.

I've been getting more and more unwell. My left arm has started tingling, I'm sweating with cold hands and feet, the pain is indescribable and I'm exhausted. I slept for 6 hours this afternoon and I'm still utterly exhausted and all my joints hurt.

I've had to phone my father in law who is an hour away to come through to sit with the twins. I'm on hold to 111 but a 45 minute wait to call answer as a minimum they said.

I'm not sure whether just to call a taxi when FIL gets here to go straight to accident and emergency.

I'm a little freaked out at how unwell I feel.

Oh I’m so sorry. I hope the morphine enables you to rest and tomorrow is better x

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 08/08/2025 22:05

You have had the most awful 24 hours, surely the next 24 can only be better !
I was rather concerned that a taxi might refuse to take you last night due to the vomiting, I was relieved when I read that you were at the hospital.

GoodGollyMissDolly · 08/08/2025 22:05

Oh you poor thing 😢😢 I’m so glad you’re in the right place getting the care you need, I really hope they get you sorted soon and you can rest up and recover at home. Try and get some rest now, hopefully the morphine will help with that!

@DarkSuitsSadSongs you poor darling I never thought I'd hear the words ripening and puss forming in a positive sentence 🤣.

At the very least at least experts are all over it now.
Id definitely speak to the medics you called earlier on your journey and tell them where and what's happened now

Speedy recovering. 😘

montelbano · 08/08/2025 22:08

Pleased you are getting the treatment you so badly needed.
Think you have grounds for complaint about you initial triage(and to stop errors like this happening again) so a letter to PALS would be quite in order, I would also write a detailed and very graphic description of everything (especially the details of the surgery) that has happened since you saw the hospital doctor and personally hand it to the triage nurse. She needs retraining

PerhapsaSillyQuestion · 08/08/2025 22:09

Ps I'm glad your DH had a tear for goodness sake !!

JulietSierra · 08/08/2025 22:10

Ah no I’m so sorry to hear this. Hope you get some good pain relief and manage a few hours sleep.

Stay strong op. You’re in the right place and they’ll look after you. This will all be over soon. Sending lots of get well wishes to you.

KatsWhiskas · 08/08/2025 22:10

Also sending you one! Please let us know how things go x

That's really interesting and you have a brilliant GP - my friend had a kidney infection and was absolutely screaming in agony. I had one and had a flank ache but it was manageable (though I couldn't get warm and was trembling violently). I also had 3 unmedicated labours.

I mentioned it to my husband and he thinks I internalise pain because my only vocalisations during labour were telling him when they crowned that we weren't having more kids. The kidney stones were absolutely excruciating, I couldn't breathe deeply and I could only pace at its worst.

GabriellaMontez · 08/08/2025 22:23

You poor thing. As they say ' this too shall pass' - hang in there and hope you feel better tomorrow.

whatwasthatnoise · 08/08/2025 22:25

That sounds a bit more positive than when you first posted 24 hrs ago. I hope the boil 'ripens' 🤢 quickly so it can be drained again. Glad you got to see your DH, and he saw how poorly you've been (not that I'm glad about that, but you know what I mean). Sending speedy recovery vibes.

DetectiveDouche · 08/08/2025 22:28

Just wanted to drop you a line OP, to say I've been following your story and think you are really brave. Sending you lots of good luck vibes and well wishes for a speedy recovery 💐

LakieLady · 08/08/2025 22:29

Oh no, OP, this sounds awful.

I really hope that they can get it sorted tomorrow.

murasaki · 08/08/2025 22:32

You poor thing. I'm so glad you got checked out when you did and hope the morphine kicks in soon. My dad still fondly reminisces about how good it was when he had his knee replacement. I think he got in trouble re the self push button....

WearyAuldWumman · 08/08/2025 22:45

Sending you best wishes, OP. Glad you're now getting the treatment you need.

HevenlyMeS · 08/08/2025 22:47

mommatoone · 08/08/2025 22:48

Gosh OP, what a 24hours it has been for you! . Really hope you get sorted soon. It sounds like you are in good hands. Big hugs x

Mimosa3andmore · 08/08/2025 22:50

Thinking of you op. You're very brave (I'm in my 50s and have never had an anaesthetic, operation or hospital). I'm so glad you went to hospital last night. Hopefully your dh will properly step up over the next few days and weeks. I'm sure he didn't realise quite how ill you were initially. Your fil sounds great too. Take care and I hope they manage your pain properly in hospital and you get some sleep tonight 💐

Dawnb19 · 08/08/2025 22:53

I've been keeping up with this thread. OP your children are fine you need to put yourself first for once. Don't discharge yourself and use the time in hospital to relax. Your husband can step up and look after them.

My mam had a small cyst drained once. It was small so only required a thin needle and no cuts and she said it was so painful for days. My mam has a really high pain threshold as well. Yours is a lot worse than hers. You need rest and strong painkillers.

NovaF · 08/08/2025 22:53

Throwing this out there, should it ever flare up again. When you feel better look up hydradenitis supparativa. Reason I write this is is because I had some horrific bursts of what the drs diagnosed as cellulitis - went to hospital multiple times, was horrific and like you made me feel so unwell, temp high, cold hands/feet. Dr’s rarely spot it, just mentioning it incase this happens again, had big cysts that would not drain. Sending big love OP

scotvic · 08/08/2025 22:58

gosh what a dreadful time you have had, I’m so sorry! Well done for coping so well and hoping that you feel better very soon. I had cellulitis on my leg and it did take quite a few days to go down even with maximum antibiotics - and they sometimes have to juggle around to find the ‘right’ / best antibiotics for your particular infection. Also I don’t think you can have IV antibiotics at home, which might mean recovery takes longer. Good luck!!

TattyHatty · 08/08/2025 23:13

I thought I had that and then it turned out to be MRSA. I dealt with huge abscesses in my groin area, breasts and upper legs for 4 years before I was able to get rid of it
