I'm home alone with my 12 year old twins as my husband is working away and not due back until tomorrow evening. He's about 6 hours away.

Over the last few days I've had a painful boil under my boob. I saw the GP today as it doubled in size overnight. There is a red circle around it. She prescribed doxycycline (2 a day) and said to phone back if it gets worse.

I've been getting more and more unwell. My left arm has started tingling, I'm sweating with cold hands and feet, the pain is indescribable and I'm exhausted. I slept for 6 hours this afternoon and I'm still utterly exhausted and all my joints hurt.

I've had to phone my father in law who is an hour away to come through to sit with the twins. I'm on hold to 111 but a 45 minute wait to call answer as a minimum they said.

I'm not sure whether just to call a taxi when FIL gets here to go straight to accident and emergency.

I'm a little freaked out at how unwell I feel.

I'm finally awake and fully back with it.

It wasn't the best news. The ultrasound of my breast had shown fluid so I wad green lit for draining. They did manage to remove a small bit of fluid but couldn't get anymore. They scanned again whilst I was under and all the fluid was gone. There's just a mass of infection left which they obviously can't cut into it.

The surgeon was really kind and said he reviewed the ultrasound from the breast clinic and he agreed that it looked like there was more fluid. But apologised that the abscess wasn't fully ripened so the little fluid they got out won't mean a significant amount of pain reduction and we will need to go again.

I'm having IV antibiotics, they've hooked up an IV paracetamol and are getting me morphine injection for the pain which is worse because now I've got incision pain and pain from the inflammation that's left inside me. So now we wait on it ripening and a pus pocket forming.

I could sob. And actually DH did have a wee tear when he saw me as I look so poorly. The nurse took pity and only kicked him out 10 minutes ago

Oh, you poor thing. At least you are in the right place for pain management and IV antibiotics. Hope you get better soon. 💐

AnotherNewName456 · 08/08/2025 23:18

You poor thing. Thinking of you and hoping for ripening soon.

nunsflipflop · 08/08/2025 23:25

I really feel for you. I have a condition which means I have these infections a lot. Currently on holiday with a beast in my vulva that I’m desperately trying to ignore.

Have you had these before?
Are they around your breasts, armpits, bum and genitals and thighs?

If so, once this is over you need a referral to a dermatologist that specialises in Hidradenitis Supprativa. There is no cure but there are several treatments they can try.

Gentle hugs for you OP

I asked if I could go home and it was a firm no. He said its not unheard pf for the scan to be misleading on fluid.

The nurse has gone off to get the lovely morphine injection for my bum.

I’ve been sending good thoughts from California.
I hope they’ve made it across the Atlantic to you.
Girl you’ve been through the wringer! ❤️

I was thinking sepsis too (I've had it, I honestly thought I was dying, I've never felt so ill). If you feel like you're rapidly declining, definitely phone 999.

Me too. It was horrific- absolutely awful.

bloomingbonkerz · 09/08/2025 06:42

Ouch

AMurderofMurderingCrows · 09/08/2025 07:39

You poor thing, you've really been through it. I'm so glad you went to A&E AND stayed against the nurses advice. Hoping you have a speedy recovery ❤️

Good morning, how are you today?

I had a little rash under my boob, heat related and it was excruciating so I can only wince at the pain you must be suffering.

I hope they sort it soon..

I'm a 42E and found a little relief wearing a tighter bra that didn't fit under my boob so lifting the boob away from the skin. Uncomfortable in other ways but maybe it'll help when you are recovering.

Hope you get back home soon and safely.

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 09/08/2025 08:21

You poor thing, @DarkSuitsSadSongs, you’re really being put through the mill. Glad you’re in the right place and being treated at least. Virtual (gentle!) hugs for you.

Spookedbythespiders · 09/08/2025 08:38

Hope you are comfortable OP

itsgettingweird · 09/08/2025 08:41

Hope the morphine jab gave you a wonderful nights sleep.

Hope you get some good news today. So sorry you are going through this - abscesses are so painful.

StandFirm · 09/08/2025 08:45

Sending you good wishes OP. I had horrible mastitis when I tried to breastfeed my first child and it was excruciating - worse even than the aftermath of the emergency C section that left me with a severely bruised abdomen and kept me 2 weeks in hospital... Any pain to do with the breast seems to me to be generally completely underestimated!

NovaF · 08/08/2025 22:53

Throwing this out there, should it ever flare up again. When you feel better look up hydradenitis supparativa. Reason I write this is is because I had some horrific bursts of what the drs diagnosed as cellulitis - went to hospital multiple times, was horrific and like you made me feel so unwell, temp high, cold hands/feet. Dr’s rarely spot it, just mentioning it incase this happens again, had big cysts that would not drain. Sending big love OP

I feel for you, @NovaF. I have a friend with HS and she gets really dreadful episodes of it that seem to go on for months. It took a few years for hers to be diagnosed.

LakieLady · 09/08/2025 09:02

Hope you were able to get some sleep last night, OP, and that they're able to do more to resolve this today.

Bettertimesahead101 · 09/08/2025 09:05

As soon as I saw your post, I thought it sounded like cellulitis as it was almost identical to my first experience of it. Since then, I have had it six times, each time less serious as the last as the body (apparently) learns to fight it. But, one thing that has helped my anxiety massively is that the hospital recommended that I always keep a stock of the antibiotics with me so that I can self-medicate, as soon as the symptoms start, without the rush to A&E. I always speak to a doctor by phone before taking them. This has been particularly reassuring when I go abroad or away from home for extended periods. Maybe discuss this with the hospital before you are discharged? Cellulitis is a truly awful illness and I hope you recover soon. Also, they should be able to advise you on how to prevent it e.g. antibacterial lotions, cleaning wounds and probiotics in your diet. Good luck.

In so sorry you’re poorly. I am glad you started this thread though. It’s been lovely to see the support you have received and I’m so glad you trusted your gut and stayed at A and E. I really hope you feel better soon.
You sound like a wonderful person and a fabulous mum xx
