I'm home alone with my 12 year old twins as my husband is working away and not due back until tomorrow evening. He's about 6 hours away.

Over the last few days I've had a painful boil under my boob. I saw the GP today as it doubled in size overnight. There is a red circle around it. She prescribed doxycycline (2 a day) and said to phone back if it gets worse.

I've been getting more and more unwell. My left arm has started tingling, I'm sweating with cold hands and feet, the pain is indescribable and I'm exhausted. I slept for 6 hours this afternoon and I'm still utterly exhausted and all my joints hurt.

I've had to phone my father in law who is an hour away to come through to sit with the twins. I'm on hold to 111 but a 45 minute wait to call answer as a minimum they said.

I'm not sure whether just to call a taxi when FIL gets here to go straight to accident and emergency.

I'm a little freaked out at how unwell I feel.

My DP had cellulitis on his elbow that grew all the way up to his armpit and fingers. They were giving him Iv daily and sending him home! Until the third day he went, waited for an hour for his turn for IV and fainted in the toilet. They finally put him on the ward and gave IV antibiotics 4 times a day. It’s crazy how some drs ignore how serious it can be especially that the daily does wasn’t working and his swelling kept growing. They also had to drain his arm. It was a very scary week for us because we felt so helpless with lack of urgency from the hospital staff where he was getting more and more poorly

Hope you are feeling OK now OP. Do whatever is best for you to aid your recovery. Your DH sounds avoidant but he will just have to step up at home and look after you and your DC. Don't start doing things yourself. He needs to do it.🌺

I agree with this totally @DarkSuitsSadSongs ! It’s like the put your own oxygen mask on first saying…
It’s important you have the op, stay there and recover and don’t rush it. They will miss you at home for a couple of days, but so much better than this dragging on, not healing properly or you rushing in some way and being off colour for the next few weeks.
Hope you get well soon and the operation goes really well. It sounds so painful xx

Same here. Mine was at the very top of my thigh near my bum. I couldn't sit down!
I was given antibiotics on the Friday and it was a bank holiday. It hit worse over the weekend and I was at the GP first thing Tuesday. Sent straight to hospital and admitted. Does to emergencies didn't have the op until then Wednesday. I was also shocked at the GA but they told me the same, it would have been to painful to do locally.

I hope the op went ok OP and you are on the ward recovering well x

I had a boil right in the crease where leg meets buttock, and I had to sit on one bum cheek for a couple of days.

I think mine was caused by wearing the wrong knickers on a long horse ride, they chafed badly (but only on one side, I must have a lopsided arse) and the boil came up less than 48 hours later.

justasking111 · 08/08/2025 21:35

A friend of DH was airlifted off a yacht during a race. Operated on his bottom he had an abscess. He's never lived it down. But was very ill.

ImustLearn2Cook · 08/08/2025 21:39

@DarkSuitsSadSongs Wishing you a fast recovery after surgery. Sending you lots of love and hugs. 🥰💐

MrsPositivity1 · 08/08/2025 21:44

I hope you are over the op now @DarkSuitsSadSongs and things start to improve

DarkSuitsSadSongs · 08/08/2025 21:50

I'm finally awake and fully back with it.

It wasn't the best news. The ultrasound of my breast had shown fluid so I wad green lit for draining. They did manage to remove a small bit of fluid but couldn't get anymore. They scanned again whilst I was under and all the fluid was gone. There's just a mass of infection left which they obviously can't cut into it.

The surgeon was really kind and said he reviewed the ultrasound from the breast clinic and he agreed that it looked like there was more fluid. But apologised that the abscess wasn't fully ripened so the little fluid they got out won't mean a significant amount of pain reduction and we will need to go again.

I'm having IV antibiotics, they've hooked up an IV paracetamol and are getting me morphine injection for the pain which is worse because now I've got incision pain and pain from the inflammation that's left inside me. So now we wait on it ripening and a pus pocket forming.

I could sob. And actually DH did have a wee tear when he saw me as I look so poorly. The nurse took pity and only kicked him out 10 minutes ago

Oh OP that must be horrible for you. I hope they get the pain under control and that it’s not too long before you’re sorted and home.x

CustardySergeant · 08/08/2025 21:54

Oh no! I'm so sorry you're still suffering pain. I know we were all hoping you'd wake up after the op feeling so much better, but now you're even worse! 😟
Oh well, at least you're safe and being looked after with antibiotics and pain relief, but I can imagine how disappointed you must be.

Byjimminy · 08/08/2025 21:54

Aw, that's a rough deal OP Flowers

Glad your DH showed up and has been there for you. Will have fingers crossed for lots of lovely pus very soon! Hope you get a good night's rest.

Silvers11 · 08/08/2025 21:55

Aw!! Sending you a huge hug @DarkSuitsSadSongs . At least they are keeping you in, but I am so sorry that the op hasn't helped and it will need to be done again. At least your DH is back now and realises how poorly you are. I hope the morphine helps and you can get some sleep

sunsetoverit · 08/08/2025 21:55

Hope you feel better soon op FlowersBrew

Thelosthalfathought · 08/08/2025 21:56

Hopefully once the pain is under control you can get some sleep. Do you get to go home or are they keeping you in until they can resolve it?

OneBrightMorning · 08/08/2025 21:56

Oh, you poor thing. What rotten luck. I hope the morphine helps with the pain.

Megirlan123 · 08/08/2025 21:59

What a shame. Im glad your DH has arrived and is keeping you company.
i hope you have a settled night and can get things moving again tomorrow x

DarkSuitsSadSongs · 08/08/2025 22:01

I asked if I could go home and it was a firm no. He said its not unheard pf for the scan to be misleading on fluid.

The nurse has gone off to get the lovely morphine injection for my bum.

You poor thing, you are so brave and I hope with all my heart that tomorrow finds you in less pain. Morphine is a godsend in my experience as the times I have had it the pain was greatly reduced along with anxiety, everything seemed to fade into the middle distance. Hope it works like that for you, as you are really having a time of it

Clearinguptheclutter · 08/08/2025 22:03

Im sorry it sounds utterly miserable

I just hope you manage to sleep tonight with the morphine and by the morning the IV antibiotics are properly kicking in

@ReadingSoManyThreads ive recently had similar. Out of hours told me I'd had a muscle spasm because I didn't appear to be in agony. Pain got worse so I saw my GP. She took one look at me and asked how my labour's were, I was like erm WTF has that got to do with my pain. She instantly diagnosed me with kidney stones and says a lot of people are on the floor in agony. The fact that I'd driven down to the surgery, was walking normally was because I'd experienced similar pain levels during an unmedicated childbirth so me describing the pain as like childbirth without actually showing outward pain was normal for me. It took a GP to actually look past pain levels and listen to my symptoms for me to actually get treated properly.

Edited

That's really interesting and you have a brilliant GP - my friend had a kidney infection and was absolutely screaming in agony. I had one and had a flank ache but it was manageable (though I couldn't get warm and was trembling violently). I also had 3 unmedicated labours.
