Man Falls To His Death At Wembley Oasis Concert

Just reading a thread on Redditt about this. Terrible situation. The thing that sticks with you the most is the insane amount of alcohol that was being consumed ( it hasn’t been stated that the man who fell was drunk but a lot of people were) & apparently Wembley Stadium proudly claimed they’d sold 250K pints. Not sure if that was in one night. Many concertgoers had been drinking all day & some could hardly stand up, plus the stadium floors were like ice rinks from spilt beer (it was being thrown everywhere). I don’t drink anymore but even when I did, I couldn’t get my head round why people feel the need to get absolutely steaming drunk to have a good time.

no the thing that sticks in my head is that someone died - what an awful thing to happen

springbabydays · 04/08/2025 09:35

Well it's a potential factor yes (and we don't know if this poor man was drinking, or if others nearby were either) but the design of stadia seating now means that there is a risk of falling even to sober people. Some places are just not safe and something really needs to change.

Sorry I didn’t mean for one second to gloss over that - it’s horrendous.

There was a lot in the thread about safety. Some seats are scarily high up with very steep steps

It's awful. I felt unsafe at the O2 at a gig recently - our seats were so high up and the stairs were so steep. And there were a lot of very drunk people....

Yes. At a football match or sports event, people are perhaps more likely to be seated, for at least the bulk of the event. I’m not sure in England, but in Scotland alcohol can’t be served during football matches. At a gig, as well as the potential impact of alcohol, people are more likely to be dancing/standing/moving around, increasing risk.

What a terrible thing to happen

FanofLeaves · 04/08/2025 09:54

Yeah someone falling at one of those concerts seemed like an accident waiting to happen to be honest. I always think it when at the O2 in the high up seats.

SupposesRoses · 04/08/2025 09:56

There was a thread on here a few days before the concert from a poster afraid to go as her seat was high up. At the time I thought she was overly anxious.

They sold significantly more beer at the Oasis gigs than at any other event Wembley has ever hosted. They must have made a fortune.
Having run from the top to the bottom after a Take That concert many years ago (rushing for the Tube) I can see how easy it would be to slip.
Obviously, we don’t know what happened to this poor man. It could be anything.
However, it is also clear that many people were buying a LOT of alcohol (no idea of how much got drunk v how much spilt). One of my pet peeves at gigs is drunk people and the smell of spilt beer so very glad I didn’t go.
I’m surprised people could afford that much beer after paying for tickets and merch.

No alcohol during (men’s at least) football. Plenty of alcohol at Twickenham/Murrayfield for the rugby though.

I was at Wembley last weekend, I can see how this could have happened, people were very drunk, and it was very steep, also everybody was standing and dancing for the whole concert in the seated area. It was beyond amazing, but I can see how it could be dangerous too.

These places are awful higher up you are. The really steep stairs too. I'm surprised there's not more injuries. I was watching Peter Kay at the O2 in the gods and was on the edge of a panic attack throughout and praying I didn't have to stand up to let people past.

TokyoSushi · 04/08/2025 09:59

£28 for 4 cans of beer at Wembley as a 'special offer' - people were drinking it by the boatload.

DyslexicPoster · 04/08/2025 09:59

Was on a thread not long ago talking about the scary O2 seating height and angle. It's the fear of falling from the top as it's so steep. Now knowing it's possible to fall to your death is next level.

But we don't know yet the circumstances. Poor people. Very sad.

Absentmindedsmile · 04/08/2025 10:00

It’s so strange. I went to an oasis concert back in the day (94/5/6). At that concert that day / night, a man died. It was a member of the crew fell off something. Horrible.

BarOne · 04/08/2025 10:00

So sorry to hear this. It’s always a tragedy.
A friend went an couple
of weeks ago and there was a fight behind her. Men pushing and shoving each other out of their seats. Only One young security guy to try and sort it. A bunch of women stopped it in the end. But particularly scary because of the height of the seats. People having to were move away so as not to fall

Motomum23 · 04/08/2025 10:02

It's made me incredibly anxious of my high up front row seats to blackpink in a fortnight! Absolutely horrendous way to go and I really really hope he was so heavily intoxicated he had no idea what was happening tbh.

Firstshoes · 04/08/2025 10:03

I once booked to see a show at Manchester Palace. I didn't realise quite high the seats were. I couldn't do it! I was edging along the wall and had to leave. Goodness knows how people manage high up at the O2 or Wembley !

Ohthatsmeback · 04/08/2025 10:04

Absolutely horrendous news.

Tbh there was a thread last year where Oasis concerts were discussed and quite a few pp talked about how a lot of the drinkers piss into their glasses and then throw them at people. I think this happens at other gigs but Oasis concerts are particularly bad. So for that reason alone I wouldnt want to go to one.

WaltzingWaters · 04/08/2025 10:07

I love a drink myself, but I really don’t understand why people would want to get properly drunk at a concert they’ve paid hundreds to attend, to probably end up completely forgetting due to excessive alcohol! (Plus for me, I’d miss half the concert running to the loo every ten minutes if I were drinking that much!).

Very sad about this man’s death.

blackpink will be quite different to Oasis.

Mumofyellows · 04/08/2025 10:08

Recently saw Lana Del Rey at Wembley and was sat high up, luckily at her concert there wasn't any rowdiness just standing and swaying really, but I was still very anxious and when I had to pop out to the loo my legs were shaking. We saw Oasis at Heaton Park, and I was so glad after seeing Lana that we were not seeing them at Wembley as I had a horrible feeling with all the booze and the way people would be wanting to jump about I wouldn't have coped at all up there.
Its very sad that someone lost their life there, they definitely need to review the rules around drinks in those seats as from what I have heard it was out of control at points with people absolutely wasted in seats very high up.

Agreed, saw Oasis a few weeks ago at Manchester and we didn't drink at all, wanted to enjoy it all and not lose our spots with constant bar and toilet trips.

JustMyView13 · 04/08/2025 10:11

I’ve been there during the football, and this was an accident waiting to happen. The amount of times I’ve seen people climbing up onto walls & railings they shouldn’t, and they’re one slip of the foot away from disaster.
I wasn’t there, so can’t comment on this occasion, and am by no means suggesting the person was drunk and / or climbing an area not designed to be climbed, but when I have seen it happen, it’s been drunk men who cannot be told to get down.
I’m sure the coroner will get to the bottom of it. Very sad for the family left behind, and those that witnessed it.

EmmaHarte · 04/08/2025 10:15

A bit like phones, alcohol seems to have taken over so many entertainment experiences. Last few concerts I’ve been to, including a v expensive and reflective one, not rock or pop, people constantly getting up to get more booze, then to go to the loo. Everyone having to stand to let them pass. I guess the venues make a lot of money from this.
