Man Falls To His Death At Wembley Oasis Concert

Just reading a thread on Redditt about this. Terrible situation. The thing that sticks with you the most is the insane amount of alcohol that was being consumed ( it hasn’t been stated that the man who fell was drunk but a lot of people were) & apparently Wembley Stadium proudly claimed they’d sold 250K pints. Not sure if that was in one night. Many concertgoers had been drinking all day & some could hardly stand up, plus the stadium floors were like ice rinks from spilt beer (it was being thrown everywhere). I don’t drink anymore but even when I did, I couldn’t get my head round why people feel the need to get absolutely steaming drunk to have a good time.

Well it's a potential factor yes (and we don't know if this poor man was drinking, or if others nearby were either) but the design of stadia seating now means that there is a risk of falling even to sober people. Some places are just not safe and something really needs to change.

I went to the Summertime Ball and our seats were in the 500's and I was having kittens, as all it would take is one person to fall, and everyone would go down like dominoes. I wouldn't willingly buy those seats again.

While I agree with a lot of what has been posted about excessive drinking at gigs, it seems disrespectful to do so in the context of a fatality we know very little about.

I have posted to say I was in no way meaning to gloss over the death as it’s horrendous. I do sincerely apologise if I have offended anyone or been disrespectful

Without wishing to be curmudgeonly, how are we simultaneously in a CoL crisis and also spending mega bucks on events like this? Travel, possibly accommodation, tickets and alcohol at those prices? Let alone merch. I’m amazed places still sell out.

Exactly, and all to make two louts who can't even sing richer all the time.
They must be laughing all the way to the bank.

I can’t believe how high some stadium seating is. I went to the Co-Op stadium in Manchester last year and our seats were right at the top, it was terrifying and I spent a lot of the gig feeling anxious. An man sat next to us lost his footing and fell on to the people in front of him, had they not been there it would have been a nasty accident

I was there at the Coop last year watching Stevie Nicks - a completely different vibe to Oasis and I also felt anxious, I was on the top tier too - I wouldn't book those seats again. I don't drink but can easily see if I had lost my footing it could happen.

Rosybud88 · 04/08/2025 12:51

I went to see Oasis at Wembley probably around 2008 and I wouldn’t go again due to the sheer amount of urine that was thrown. I’m sure some beer gets spilt but generally - it’s not beer being thrown at those prices! It was awful.

I’d expect this happened due to slippery surfaces - terribly sad.

I remember when I was 11 (last Year of Primary) and we went to a Theatre in Central London and we were up in the Gods, so to speak
I was absolutely terrified .
I don't go to the Theatre much but if I do I make sure I am not right up there

It’s the only place I ever go, because I go a lot and I’d rather be there for 3 shows than in a different seat for only one! The steepness and safety in a theatre is nowhere near what you get I. The big sports venues. They don’t feel unsafe to me at all (and I’m very bad at heights).

I appreciate why posters are focusing on the alcohol because so much has been sold.

But surely stadium design shouldnt allow for this to happen in any circumstances. People trip, get jostled etc. the design should allow for that.

Agree - honestly, for the safety of the people below (who he presumably landed on) it shouldn’t be possible to fall over the safety railing even if you are trying to.

VivaDixie · 04/08/2025 12:59

That said I went to Heaton Park to see Oasis a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it - there were a few people drunk but to be honest it was a good atmosphere, everyone just dancing and enjoying themselves, I didn't feel I had to get out of anyone's way, in fact I was dancing and singing with loads of strangers. I certainly didn't get any pissy drinks thrown at me.

So yep they are a genre - but all the Oasis fan hate certainly wasn't my experience of the gig.

I was relieved to be on terra firma though. RIP to this poor bloke.

MrsSlocombesCat · 04/08/2025 13:02

I took my son to see Muse at Wembley Stadium and I am scared of heights so being in the upper seating area ruined the whole thing because I felt so nervous. I'm certainly not surprised someone fell it seems very precarious up there, it's a very steep angle of a seating area.

It is awful, it’s lucky he didn’t land on someone and injure / kill them
as well.

Ohthatsmeback · 04/08/2025 10:04

Absolutely horrendous news.

Tbh there was a thread last year where Oasis concerts were discussed and quite a few pp talked about how a lot of the drinkers piss into their glasses and then throw them at people. I think this happens at other gigs but Oasis concerts are particularly bad. So for that reason alone I wouldnt want to go to one.

Been to Liam and Noel solo many times, yes it's true. People don't want to move from their space so pee in a cup (typically men as I can't figure how a woman could do that easily stood up 😂) then first song comes on and pee gets launched. First gig I ever went to was kings of Leon, and it happened then too. It's more of an indie/rock gig thing but it didn't happen when I saw my chemical romance.

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 04/08/2025 13:07

250k pints / 90k people = < 3 pints each

Yes, not everyone will have been drinking or drinking pints but it really isn't a huge amount per person.

siliconcover · 04/08/2025 13:16

Sidebeforeself · 04/08/2025 11:23

How on earth do these stadia pass H&S regs? Perhaps , sadly, now there will be some new rules introduced. I am terrified of heights and just simply will not go if I have to sit high up. Also you are paying £££ to watch a screen.

It's different but: I was at the Trooping of the Colour in 2022, (fairly 'high up' but not very) We were all told to stand for the National Anthem and two women directly in front of me fell through the floor under their seats (rotten). It being a military thing it all carried on until some seats in the stand opposite also collapsed. I have never been nervous before but now, after the absolute shambles that was the evacuation operation I'd be much more wary of large scale events.

They are but they were rich before this tour. Louts? Maybe but rags to riches and they escaped their upbringing which is the dream. The Gallaghers made it and now pay a lot more tax (probably) than many of you who complain about taxation do. And they haven't left the country.

TheLemonLemur · 04/08/2025 13:19

Awful tragic situation. I used to work in a large arena - event safety staff on the floor were on zero hours contracts with little to no training in customer service or basic first aid.

I witnessed many accidents, spilled drinks and people falling down stairs. Not all were alcohol fueled but some were it made me wonder why people spent £100s on tickets, drinks etc in some cases they never even seen the show as would be ejected before or during it

StillChangingForTheBetter · 04/08/2025 13:24

I've been to Wembley multiple times and I've never thought there was a risk of falling to be honest.

Pedallleur · 04/08/2025 13:25

Stadia are all over the world some being bigger than Wembley. And every year millions of people go to events in them and don't die. It was an accident. Possibly something exacerbated it eg drinking, a fall, a momentary loss of balance.

Figcherry · 04/08/2025 13:26

The amount of drunk women in their 40's at a Take That concert over 10 years ago put me off watching bands at arenas forever.

wevetalkedalittlenotalot · 04/08/2025 11:41

I went saw oasis there last Wednesday. Was pitch standing so didn’t experience the seats (although we were in the gods last year for Taylor Swift).

The alcohol situation was insane. The second oasis appeared on stage pints of beer started being chucked around. Someone poured a pint of beer down the back of my head, someone else down the back of my legs. Not intentionally, they were just drunk and unsteady.

A guy came back from the bar having bought 8 pints of beer and only one survived - his Dad was literally taking fully pints out of the trays and throwing them at the crowd.

We moved out of the crowd after about half an hour and had a much nicer time on the edge of the floor. Which I stuck to due to all the beer 😬

I’m really sorry to hear about the poor man dying. The atmosphere was so MALE and at times intimidating (although my partner is massive so generally I would get banged into then there would be MASSIVE apologies when they clocked my partner was with me).

complete contrast to the Eras tour which was female energy, peace and love and I honestly don’t remember anyone being drunk.

When we got off the coaches from Taylor all the fans were so respectful and calm walking back to hotels etc. Most were adults so ot wasnt the fact it was kids. There were easily 100 people.

Then there were two groups of loud, drunk obnoxious men being absolute pita. Those 2 groups totalled about 10 people but were causing so much more grief and noise and issues.

When we were checking out of the hotel the lady behind the desk said that the hotel had been crazy but that it had been full of the nicest guests ever and that she wished all guests were swifties.

Oldglasses · 04/08/2025 13:51

I was there last night, didnt' know that someone had died the night before until this morning. Terrible.
We were seated- in the first tier though - and my DH remarked about how steep the top tier was. In the block next to us a couple of fans were on their companion's shoulders - madness and never seen that in a seated area before, only in the standing and i've been to a lot of concerts over the years.
I don't drink so just had water and DH had 1 pint, but there were loads of people going out for more drinks and some very pissed people around. It was all very good natured though where we were. We only saw a bit of argy bargy walking out afterwards. I would say the floor was more sticky than slippery though - a bit like old nightclub floors.
Last year we were high up in the O2 and those seats were vertigo-inducing. Reallly steep. Def not doing that again.

I was there last night and didn't know they'd been a fatality the night before, and reading news reports it happened right at the end of the gig so it looks like it occured when he was leaving (it finished about 10.10).

A bit like phones, alcohol seems to have taken over so many entertainment experiences. Last few concerts I’ve been to, including a v expensive and reflective one, not rock or pop, people constantly getting up to get more booze, then to go to the loo. Everyone having to stand to let them pass. I guess the venues make a lot of money from this.

I would say that alcohol is becoming less of the experience generally, and that part of the reason Oasis was so bad was that it was middle aged men trying to relieve the pissed up 90s.

Hoppinggreen · 04/08/2025 14:08

I went to see Beyonce in Manchester a few years ago (seated) and it was ruined by drunk people. Security were pretty good about chucking people out but as one point a full plastic pint of something went flying over our heads and covered the people in the row in front and people were up and down all evening to get more drinks.
Apart from anything else if they have paid £100 plus for a ticket why spend half of that time queuing at a var or in the loo?

Yes, not everyone will have been drinking or drinking pints but it really isn't a huge amount per person.

Loads of people there wouldn't even be old enough to drink, people were taking their children. So you're talking about the average adult person probably having four beers over two hours, even three beers in two hours is enough to be drunk though. And that wouldn't have been the first beer of the night likely.
