I've put a couple of autumnal decorations out and a pumpkin spice reed diffuser. Loving how it's not too hot to sleep at the moment.🍂🍁🌰🍄

TheGrimSmile · 08/08/2025 11:17

I love autumn. I love wrapping up in coats and scarves. Drawing the curtains at night. Lighting the fire. Staying in and not feeling like I should be out doing something. I used to love Bonfire Night - but that seems to have been usurped by Halloween. But there's also something a little melancholic about it too. It's a strange feeling. I think I'm just a natural depressive.

TheGrimSmile · 08/08/2025 11:18

Oh and the main thing: being able to sleep at night in a cool bedroom.

ImWearingPantaloons · 08/08/2025 11:19

Cannot wait to get my hoodies and slow cooker out!!

Hiya, OP. Just to let you know, we've moved your cosy autumn thread from AIBU to Chat for you as we thought it would be a better fit here.

Sunday roast dinners and spending more time with the teens because they are out and doing stuff in the summer but come the colder darker months they hang out with us a bit more eating, playing games, reading, homework, debating and chatting.

And going away October half term, when you get off the plane and it's noticeably warmer than where you left, that's fun as well.

What do you like to make in your slow cooker? I tend to make the same thing in mine and fancy trying something new.

ididitandthatsgood · 08/08/2025 16:10

I normally make my own bits of seasonal decor and really enjoy it. This week I was ordering some clothes from Next and saw a cute autumn garland. It’s just arrived and is so cute.
We’ve made blackcurrant and apple jam this week from a lovely walk gathering blackberries and my Mum’s apple tree.
I’ve even got scones in the oven.
I just saw a PP has made plum jam and I’m now assessing the plums situation as DH brought some home from a friend at work.
I’m not a happy person at the moment but thoughts of Autumn are cheering me up 🍂🍁

I make the Taming Twins Beef curry which is gorgeous but she’s got so many slow cooker recipes - so good!

MrsVinceVega · 08/08/2025 16:51

Autumn is my favourite season.

Autumn leaves - just so beautiful
Cooler weather - much less need for sunblock, staying in the shade or having to stay in (I'm a redhead and can burn even with frequent application of factor 50)
Nicer clothes - knitwear, layers, coats, hats, scarves, boots, slippers, pyjamas - I'm looking forward to the autumn and winter clothes hitting the shops.
Colder weather food - soup, stews, fruit crumble, pies, etc
Being cosy at home - log fire, cups of tea, hot water bottles
Autumn walks - I enjoy walking so much more in cooler weather, even if it rains.

I make a lovely pork stew with sauteed onion and browned diced pork rib chops, big chunks of carrot, celery and leek, rosemary, whole cloves of garlic, a handful of red lentils a very small amount of stock. Cook on high for 6-8 hours. I really love how the vegetables taste after being slowly cooked with the meat.

I have learned not to put potatoes in, they go a horrible spongy texture. I assume it's because 8 hours is too long to cook them. If we want potatoes with the stew I cook them separately in the usual way.

I've also made bread in the slow cooker when we were without an oven for a while. It worked, but looked strange as it didn't brown as it would normally.

Autumn is my favourite season and it's DD's too. We're going up to Edinburgh end of October and are genuinely hoping for brooding, stormy weather with a definite chill in the air. We intend to sit in various coffee shops drinking our cinnamon lattes and watching the rain fall outside. In the evening we're going to get into bed early and watch The Gilmore Girls.

Absolutely cannot wait!

ThatRealFawn · 08/08/2025 18:49

This may be a silly question because it sounds easy to make but I’ve never attempted a blackberry jam before, does anyone have any recipes?

This is my type of thread! Love autumn so much, the darker evenings make for perfect scented candle weather. My birthday is the first week of sept and I've asked DH to take me autumn shopping and he isn't allowed to moan, he has to be enthusiastic! My kids are neuro divergent so the calm colour base that goes with the autumn is perfect for them! Love a blanket and my oldie, cups of tea, even enjoy the steam coming off the dog on a walk in the fresh mornings! I've got an autumn themed tattoo with conkers and orange leaves which I love. Conker picking is my favourite, along with the garden centers bringing out their seasonal bits.

ididitandthatsgood · 08/08/2025 19:13

Just remembered that my sweet DGD is old enough for conker hunting now 😍

Equal quantities of fruit to sugar.
Bring to the boil and stir until the sugar has dissolved.
Continue to boil until setting point is reached. Test this by spooning a little onto a plate, cool for a minute and see if it 'sets'.
Pour into sterilised jars.

That's it!

Sterilise tge jars by washing them then either put through a hot dishwasher cycle or pit them in the sink and cover with very hot water. Don't forget to also sterilise the lids and any spoons or ladles that touch the jam.

CutiePatootee · 08/08/2025 21:34

I’ve always been an Autumn lover, I just love everything about it. Top faves are the food, stews, traybakes, Sunday roasts, soups, then crumbles and sponges for pudding.

When I was a child, I loved Bonfire Night, having a new winter coat and wellies, my cosy little bed and Christmas on the horizon.

Im an Autumn baby too, so maybe that has something to do with it. I like snuggling, I’m currently watching tv under various fleece blankets, with my PJs on, as I’m freezing. Bed is lovely too, we get to cuddle to sleep rather than DP flinging the quilt off randomly cos he’s too hot!.

This Autumn will be special in a different way, we get to welcome our new puppy!! We lost our lovely old girl in June and I’m missing her so much. We decided to wait a couple of months before getting another, and it’s been hell, if I’m honest. Just can’t wait for those dog walks again, with a new fluff ball around, playing in the leaves.

piscofrisco · 09/08/2025 08:22

Jumpers. Boots. Coats! I love Autumn. I usually go quite hard on trimming up the house but I think we will be moving this year so it might not happen. So instead I’m going quite hard on autumnal wardrobe planning instead. I’ve just ordered some boots and a jumper so I’m ready for the first crisp day. (That said last year was so mild where we are that if this year is the same it will be bloody December before I can wear them)

Amazing thank you!! Im planning on doing some foraging today so I’ll attempt a batch and see how it goes!

That's brilliant! Let me know how you get on. Blackberry jam is so delicious.

I love autumn and hate the heat, I have absolutely no idea why I thought i could survive living in the South West of France.

I have a fair to do tomorrow and its going to be 35 in the shade. Meep.

I cant wait to wear jeans again, get my hoodie on, and get raking leaves. And also make pottery that doesn't dry out too fast, and maybe even needs bringing indoors to be by the wood burner to dry out. It means I can take more time over each piece and decorate it with more intention.

Also, to harvest the crops. Clear the beds and polytunnel out and sow fresh seeds for spring. And put in next year's garlic, shallots and onions which have been stupendous this season.

And soups. We love soups.

Hedjwitch · 09/08/2025 11:02

I am surprised at all the people decorating their houses for autumn. I just use the same stuff all year round..crockery,bedding etc. How very boring I am.
I used to love autumn for many of the reasons already stated but as I've got older I dread it as brings winter with it.Commuting in the dark, long tedious evenings etc. I prefer being out in the garden and growing herbs and feeling the sun on my face.

vinylvibes · 09/08/2025 11:28

Autumn is my favourite season. I can't wait fir darker nights, leaf kicking, decorating the house for autumn then Halloween. Cooking stews and soups. Love it 😊

CutiePatootee · 09/08/2025 11:33

Just to add, for the lazy amongst us, in autumn there’s less fuss about “beach bodies” dealing with hairy legs, suntans, sweating and all that. Also we don’t have to suffer other folks acres of flesh, their manky feet and stinky pits.
Just chuck on a layer or two, no one sees our hairy bits!😄
