Ooh I was just thinking this walking home this evening on a beautiful day thinking we are definitely moving into that almost late Summer feel. The sun is a little lower in the sky, it’s no longer light at 10pm (north Scotland) and it generally feels calmer. I must say I am excited it is 1 August tomorrow. I look forward to that first Autumnal park walk with the crunchy colourful leaves, the bonfire smell in the air, reading the Waitrose mag or a paper in the pub on a Sunday with a glass of red and getting home to cook a roast for myself. Costing up with library books, leaving through cookbooks and planning Autumnal dinner ideas. Getting the candles out. Switching my wardrobe

This sounds heavenly

I’ve managed to avoid the shops mostly but my social media is full of ‘code orange’ drops and I worry that if I do want to buy anything it’ll be gone by the time Autumn is actually here - I suspect that’s exactly what retailers are hoping for though.

I don’t tend to buy much other than candles but I’ve built up a small collection of ornaments/bits and pieces that I love getting out each year much like the Xmas decorations. I did succumb to a Jellycat conker last year but he was too expensive to put away so stays out all year round 😳

youreactinglikeafunmum · 31/07/2025 19:01

September 1st = my new years day

Hopefully starting The Good Wife again
Return to school (CANNOT WAIT)
Being cosy in bed
It getting dark early 😍
Cold weather, having the heating on and the electric blanket
Soup
Pies
Prepping for Christmas

Can't wait 😭😭

But I worry that, now that the weather is bad, it will be hot for ages in the autumn 🥺

Willitgrow · 31/07/2025 19:06

I want to make my DC snail costumes for Halloween week after seeing a very adorable reel on it yesterday. Doubt I'll get away with that being their main costumes though! Last year they were the Gruffalo & The Big Bad Mouse, so I need to think of even cuter matching ones this year.

I started picking up acorns already for a banner I want to DIY.

& looking forward to making cinnamon simmer pots to scent the house.

Feel craftier in Autumn for some reason!

CandyCane457 · 31/07/2025 19:08

For the first time last year I had enough autumn decorations to make a box, and I can’t wait to get it out of the loft! It’s just things like an autumn wreath, autumn/spooky mugs, little pumpkin ornaments, wax melts, autumnal candle holders that are too lovely to throw so I’ll refill them using leftover wax from wax melts etc. I also have a couple of books like Sleepy Hollow and Haunting of Hill House, with really distinctive covers and they make for nice coffee table books during this season 😊🍂🎃

I also follow a couple of autumnal accounts on Instagram that post really gorgeous aesthetics, and that gets me so excited!

Im still wanting to enjoy summer but with the anticipation of autumn on the horizon, and what I love this time of year is that autumnal vibe slowly creeping into films/tv but without it being too obvious . So for example last summer I went to the cinema to see It Ends With Us, which is not a seasonal film in any way, but a couple of evening scenes showed people walking down cute American high streets in the dark, with lots of fairy lights up, and little scenes like that get me so ready for it!

Oooo I love this thread.

I loooovvvee autumn. We have ponies and I am so over flies, frozzled grass, hot, grumpy ponies and sweating my arse off everytime I ride. Not to mention the ground is too hard to do much.

I made cornish pastys yesterday as was too warm still for a stew, but just fancied something different to summery food. Was lush. At the end of August I am going to declutter the house, clean it to within an inch of its life and buy new wax melts, a new candle and hopefully it will be cool enough to be cosy in an evening.

Ill make soups, stews, roasts again, cottage pie. I love the weather in September and October, especially when its cool first thing but warms up to light jacket weather. The ponies are much happier, uni restarts and that's lovely too. And DS starts secondary this year so that feels like a milestone.

I just love it.

Fecking hate winter tho. Its OK until after Christmas but January seems to last forever.

amillionandone · 31/07/2025 19:30

I'm looking forward to sitting outside and listening to leaves falling to the ground... sleeping better after the temperatures drop... watching spooky films (which I do year-round, but it's different in October)... putting out my autumnal decorations (mostly colourful ceramic pumpkins and gourds)... taking out my 'pumpkin patch'-themed quilt... adding an extra layer of clothing... and bidding adieu to all the summertime insects for another year! (I'm getting tired of fighting them off when I walk the dogs at night.)

AffIt · 31/07/2025 19:33

I live in the west of Scotland and our best weather is generally May and September, so I tend to extend summer until 30 September!

But yes, I love autumn: I love all the seasons, but spring and autumn are my favourites.

Love all this too. The cosiness of it all. Streets are quieter in the evenings. A nice chill in the air. Smelling fireworks. I need some spooky films recommended to me x

Brownbearwhitebear · 31/07/2025 19:57

My favourite spooky films are The Lost Boys and Sleepy Hollow, neither really that scary though! And of course a re-watch of all the Harry Potters.

@Willitgrow what's a cinnamon simmer pot please? It sounds like something I need in my life 😆

It's a fancy way of saying I chuck lots of random bits that smell good into a pot with water and boil it until it makes the house smell like I was baking. I usually do apples/pears/plums with cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and any random spices or oils I have. If you bring it to a boil and then keep it on a low heat, it smells divine.

LegoTherapy · 31/07/2025 22:50

I’ve ordered two soup recipe books from New Covent Garden to add to my repertoire of soups. I eat soup all year round by autumn is the best for soup. I love drawing the curtains against the dark and having fairy lights on to make it look cozy.

ThatRealFawn · 01/08/2025 16:25

I love summer, but with the gloomy weather recently I’m over it now. If it’s going to be grey and gloomy then it can at least be chilly so I can wrap up and be cosy. Autumn has always been my favourite season, I live for being comfortable and snuggling up. I can’t wait for dog walks where I’m not sweating my head off and a more comfortable nights sleep. I’ve decided that over the next few weeks I’m going to start collecting a few things like cosy PJs, fluffy socks, a new fleece blanket, maybe a bath bomb or two, a nice warm drink of some sort and a few candles. Anything cosy really. So I can put them together in a basket or a box of some sort and gift it to myself on the autumn equinox. It’s been a big year for me so far, admittedly for others it might not seem like a lot but I’ve been really proud of myself for the things I’ve achieved this year. I passed my driving test (after 3 years), paid off all my debts and added abit to my savings and I’m finally starting a course next month to hopefully get me into university next year. I’m almost 30 so I’ve been a late bloomer. So autumn will be my month of indulgence, I can buy myself all the cosy things I love and really treat myself.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 01/08/2025 16:27

Erm, nothing. It's the start of doom and gloom until April.

Chipsahoy · 01/08/2025 17:32

Always someone to come on and moan. Honestly, you have to find joy in each season, you have to embrace life as it is. You can’t live for half a year. I used to because autumn for me meant a reminder of utter horrible brutality (survivor of grooming gangs). In therapy I learned to take each moment as it comes and to celebrate and embrace life, it keeps me in the present. So I go all out for every season. I decorate my home for each season too.

We have had a glorious spring and summer in our corner of Scotland. Today, it is chilly and grey and I have been checking on my fruit trees, so feel a shiver of excitement for autumn. I adore every season, spring probably the most but autumn is special. I am looking forward to changing out my decor but this year especially I am excited for my new kitchen which should be completed by early autumn.

Katemax82 · 01/08/2025 17:43

In my previous house I loved our log burner and making hot chocolate by melting chocolate bars in milk. And doing the school run by driving through the woods

Katemax82 · 01/08/2025 17:57

I love it when people leave box's of cooking apples outside their houses for people to take

Cinaferna · 01/08/2025 18:09

I love autumn.
Early nights with a book.
Long deep baths (not had a bath for months - just showers in hot weather)
Home made soup and crumbles and casseroles
Trenchcoats and big scarves and boots; cashmere sweaters and cord trousers.
Walks in the countryside with the leaves turning gold and late afternoon golden hour sunshine.
Lighting candles and log fires.

endofthecorridoor · 01/08/2025 18:12

I think if you grow veg either an allotment or I'm guessing farmers then it starts to feel autumnal now and feel like spring earlier. I had soup for lunch and because today's harvest was potatoes sprouts and beans it feel like we should have a roast for dinner. I've also been giving plum jam away all week and everyone wanted cinnamon in it so th house smelled like Xmas

AuntyDepressant · 31/07/2025 17:25

Cold, wet, miserable. Yeah can’t wait. Not.

Did you not read the title? 🤦‍♂️🙄

tsmainsqueeze · 01/08/2025 18:56

I love Autumn , i like the nights drawing in but absolutely hate it when we have to alter the clock , i think i could handle the bleakness of winter better if the dark nights happened naturally.
I love a mellow golden Autumnal day and this time of year some of the days have a hint of it i feel.
One of my favourite things to do is cosy the house up with throws and cuddlier cushions and i look forward to putting the winter duvet on.
I have always got fairy lights about and they come into their own in Autumn.
I love the anticipation of preparing for Winter, the gorgeous colours and flavours of seasonal fruits and veg, i remember harvest festivals as a child when it was proper home grown produce and home made bread -no tins !
I love the stillness in the air, looking forward to October half term my favourite week off , a couple of hopefully warm October days at the beach, our family bonfire in the garden then the build up to Christmas which i love as we do it our way with no pressure .
But i am not a fan of Winter once Christmas is gone and count the days down to March.

InsanityPolarity · 01/08/2025 19:53

I love all the seasons and I’m glad to shift to the next one usually as long as we’ve experienced a proper season. Love sunshine and evening walks, ice lollies, and being outdoors and in the garden in summer. I hate the heatwaves so prefer autumn to 30c
I have to say that I hate all the pumpkin spice stuff though I do love a good squash soup.
I have some amazing smelling candles all based around woods and oceans and prefer those to spicy sweet smelling ones.
Looking forward to soups and reading a good spooky book. Also really enjoying hot drinks. I cool my coffee down in summer!

Singlehouseholdjoy · 08/08/2025 11:06

Well, this morning where I am, there was a definite nip in the air when I woke up at 6am.
Felt very much like autumn is on the way!
I haven't got my autumn decs or candles out yet, but I can feel them calling to me from the loft....
