Which spelling mistakes really grate with you?

Maybe it should be 'what', not 'which'. Anyways..

-aircrafts. Grrr! The plural of aircraft is 'aircraft', not 'aircrafts'. Even aviation companies make this mistake. No excuse.

BTW, I know spelling isn't easy for some so let's keep this light hearted.

Just saw this on a thread…

“send a wedding gift toot sweet”

😱

This is a long-accepted anglicized phrase of the original French.

No way I would ever accept such a bastardisation. It’s just wrong.

Not a spelling mistake as much as a grammatical error - and my lovely DH says this ALL the time. I 'done' the dishes. I 'done' the watering. I 'done' the shopping.

No! You didn't 'done' the blooming shopping! You DID the shopping! Or, you have done the shopping.

I'm so sorry OP, this will sound awful but I hate 'anyways' instead of anyway. 🤣

Me too!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 25/07/2025 18:32

Loath when they mean loathe.

LoopieLoo17 · 25/07/2025 18:36

I see ‘defiantly’ instead of ‘definitely’ all over social media, really annoying!
I have a couple of friends that say ‘unindated’ instead of inundated … I’ve stopped trying to correct them when they say it now 😆

Gowlett · 25/07/2025 18:37

I’m rather fond of “little angle”

But, “on route”… Please, no!

It is quite acute.

Housewife2010 · 25/07/2025 18:53

I can't bear "Devine" for "divine".

pontivex · 25/07/2025 20:15

People who slam on the breaks
Sell dinning tables
Demand we close the boarders
Call people physcos

yousillygoose · 25/07/2025 20:33

Are when it should be our!!!

bungobungobungo · 25/07/2025 21:00

This thread has really peaked my interest. Er no it’s piqued actually.

How many times do you see ect instead of etc. Also a lot of people don’t know the difference between pallet, palate and palette. Very annoying.

TheTecknician · 25/07/2025 21:38

QANTAS, the Australian national airline. It is an acronym for Queensland And Northern Territories Aerial Service (or something similar) and I once saw it misspelled in a school text book with a 'u' after the 'Q'. I pointed out the mistake to the teacher but she took some convincing! She acquiesced after I told her flatly that The Tecknician doesn't make mistakes!😉

Loose/lose - I swear I have a visceral reaction when they get muddled 😵‍💫

YelramBob · 25/07/2025 22:25

I dumped a guy who said 'we was' instead of 'we were'.

Another one I hate is when people get lend and borrow mixed up. How do these people manage to walk and breathe at the same time if they can’t understand basic grammar? 🤦‍♀️

Oh my god yes and people who mix up learning and teaching! "He learnt me how to do it" 🙈

ReignOfError · 25/07/2025 22:47

Not spelling, but people using utilised as a synonym for used drives me mad.

I may be guilty of this.

Dinning when people mean dining 😤 I wonder whether people who spell it wrong laugh at the people spelling it correctly and think ‘haha, you’ve missed an n’ 🙄

There is a lovely Italian restaurant that puts 'Diner' on their manus.

I don't have the heart to tell them because they are always so nice, and they have English as a second language.

taxidriver · 26/07/2025 06:59

accommodation off the top of my head, i always check

taxidriver · 26/07/2025 07:00

or if we are taking grammar,
then
we should of gone to bed

Talisin · 26/07/2025 07:29

Probably pretty niche to the S&B board but Uniglo instead of Uniqlo. Drives me nuts.

pontivex · 26/07/2025 10:58

Fabreeze.

LadySuzanne · 26/07/2025 16:43

"they’ve got another thing coming"

"peruse" when it should be "pursue"
