Which spelling mistakes really grate with you?

Maybe it should be 'what', not 'which'. Anyways..

-aircrafts. Grrr! The plural of aircraft is 'aircraft', not 'aircrafts'. Even aviation companies make this mistake. No excuse.

BTW, I know spelling isn't easy for some so let's keep this light hearted.

Their and there. My brother can’t get it right. He’s a teacher…

How about telling him that ‘there’ is just ‘here’ with a T added.

thismummyslife · 24/07/2025 22:44

Has anyone got any ‘advise’ about how to get better at spelling!

Auburngal · 24/07/2025 22:45

Not a spelling mistake, but putting an apostrophe to make something plural. Potato's, carrot's, tomato's.

Why do people do this?

Auburngal · 24/07/2025 22:46

Also in USA, they say Math. Its Maths or Mathematics.

Rest bite. As in a period of rest, respite. I just noticed it on a thread here but I see it often.

Even a fully paid-up grumpy old pedant like me could forgive it when it often appeared on a forum for carers of people with dementia. Given that I was often at my wits’ end myself, I could see why they got it wrong - the poor things were desperate for a ‘bite’ of ‘rest’.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 24/07/2025 22:55

I often see ‘worse’ when they clearly mean ‘worst’. Presumably that could be down to autocorrect or spellcheck, though.

cupfinalchaos · 24/07/2025 23:05

Their/there, to/too

What way do you spell 'wedding fair'. I think technically it's fayre but it just seems pretentious, most places just say fair. Nit that it's something I need to spell very often as i got married 20 years ago

‘Fayre’ is down in my big fat dictionary as a ‘fake antique’ spelling of ‘fare’ (meaning food) but TBH it’s often used for ‘fair’ as well. To me it’d be a Wedding Fair, not to mention a Summer/Christmas ditto.

llittledoveblue · 24/07/2025 22:12

My BIL seems to mention “Meats and cheeses” every time we see him. It makes me cringe so bad!!
He also likes to mention he has 2 ovens all the time. Now because I’ve noticed it I can’t un notice it and it drives me bonkers!!

He could be a Bob Mortimer fan.

Most of the things people are saying aren't spelling mistakes, which the OP asked about, though; most are grammatical errors.

charabang · 25/07/2025 00:00

My pet spelling mistake hate is definitely reserved for 'definately' My daughter also says irregardless rather than regardless which annoys me too

MaloryJones · 25/07/2025 00:01

I thought of another (long thread so might have been spoken of)

"Poor Angle" for Poor Angel
Infuriates Me

Saz12 · 25/07/2025 00:16

I used to like English, but now I prefer math. I'm loving angles instead.

bumblenbean · 25/07/2025 00:39

‘Chocking’ for ‘choking’

’breath’ instead of ‘breathe’ - as in “just breath through it”

bumblenbean · 25/07/2025 00:43

Yes this is a major bugbear of mine.

And similarly using ‘ies’ when talking about the singular e.g. ‘my babies not well’ or ‘my babies head’

Whichroadtogodown · 25/07/2025 00:53

First word that came to mind is discusting.

Auburngal · 25/07/2025 07:24

Damp squid instead of the correct damp squib

Superhansrantowindsor · 25/07/2025 07:28

Etc.

Not ect.

NerdyBird · 25/07/2025 10:31

pouring over something instead of poring.

jetlag92 · 25/07/2025 11:07

saltandvinegarchipsticks · 24/07/2025 11:33

His instead of he’s

Especially when combined with Iv rather than I've. How to make yourself sound really thick.

Tulpenkavalier · 25/07/2025 15:18

Just saw this on a thread…

“send a wedding gift toot sweet”

😱

BubblyBath178 · 25/07/2025 15:33

Dinning when people mean dining 😤 I wonder whether people who spell it wrong laugh at the people spelling it correctly and think ‘haha, you’ve missed an n’ 🙄

BubblyBath178 · 25/07/2025 15:40

Another one I hate is when people get lend and borrow mixed up. How do these people manage to walk and breathe at the same time if they can’t understand basic grammar? 🤦‍♀️

saltandvinegarchipsticks · 25/07/2025 16:51

Pastrina · 24/07/2025 13:40

I worked with a woman who always said pacific instead of specific

I’m often in court with a solicitor who does this, I can never get my head around how they don’t realise as it is very common in my field of work to be applying for a Specific Issue Order…
