Which spelling mistakes really grate with you?

Maybe it should be 'what', not 'which'. Anyways..

-aircrafts. Grrr! The plural of aircraft is 'aircraft', not 'aircrafts'. Even aviation companies make this mistake. No excuse.

BTW, I know spelling isn't easy for some so let's keep this light hearted.

I see stationary more than stationery these days to mean pens and pencils etc. It’s becoming a bit like draw for drawers where they may as well change them and have done with it.

I hate the phased/fazed confusion too.

Also, loose/lose, less/fewer, your/you’re…

Their and there. My brother can’t get it right. He’s a teacher…

Please say he teaches maths…

Please say he teaches maths…

No, but at least he doesn’t teach English. He is a Head of Year though…

Rest bite. As in a period of rest, respite. I just noticed it on a thread here but I see it often.

TheTecknician · 24/07/2025 19:29

I'm not sure but I'd venture that 'altogether and 'all together' are both correct but the former is more common. But 'alright' is incorrect whereas 'all right' is correct. At least in British English.

'Supercede' instead of 'supersede'. 🙄

@TheTecknician , 'altogether and 'all together' are both correct

They are both correct but they have different meanings.
Altogether or all together ? - Cambridge Grammar

TheTecknician · 24/07/2025 19:36

The king is in the altogether ect...

Loose instead of lose

Loose incorrectly written for lose drives me mad because it seems to be becoming the default spelling 🧐

GloriaMonday · 24/07/2025 19:40

@TheTecknician , et cetera is etc.

AgnesX · 24/07/2025 19:44

Faze and phase.

🙄

It rather depends if you are British or American though doesn't it? As despatched is British English and dispatched is American English. So I am sorry to say, I think you are incorrect on that one!

There's an alternative train of thought that dispatch is to finish or complete a task and despatch to deliver something, but I think that a stretch... But either way, it's not desptach in the UK if you are taling about a delivery;)

we are in england not america...youre sound an arse

We use gotten in Scotland in every day language, i know people on mumsnet find it annoying, but it is a legitimate English word.

Where in Scotland are you fae? Gotten is unfamiliar to me (central)

I was.

TroysMammy · 24/07/2025 20:06

Prostate spelled prostrate and other simple medical terminology. You'd think 9 years+ in the job you'd know how to spell it or how to Google it.

ANiceCuppaTeaandBiscuit · 24/07/2025 20:11

People saying ‘I done something’ instead of ‘I have done’. It drives me mad.

OliviaBonas · 24/07/2025 20:41

I also saw damp squid on a thread yesterday 🦑

Tulpenkavalier · 24/07/2025 20:59

The vagaries or spell-check do not help…

I am an English graduate and ex-teacher. And yet, somehow, I apparently wrote this:

… throw spanner’s in the works 😱

I SWEAR I wrote spanners!!

(FFS……. If I hadn’t caught it, I’d have ended up with spanner’s again…!!!

LittleMi55Nobody · 24/07/2025 19:46

we are in england not america...youre sound an arse

Do you mean youre? As you’ve either spelt “you’re” incorrectly (and used the wrong word) or spelt “your” incorrectly...

And yes, we are are in England (capital E) which means it is ‘despatched’ not ‘dispatched’ as you originally posted and then, perhaps because of poor comprehension, repeated 😂

OliviaBonas · 24/07/2025 22:02

Independant also very prevalent now 😱

DiscoBob · 24/07/2025 11:37

I find the use of the word 'fruits' quite annoying. Like, the plural of fruit is fruit. Why add an S?

My boss did this when she was trying to boast about how generous they were because we were getting a box of 'fruits' delivered each week for free consumption. I don't know why, it just sounds so fucking wank!

My BIL seems to mention “Meats and cheeses” every time we see him. It makes me cringe so bad!!
He also likes to mention he has 2 ovens all the time. Now because I’ve noticed it I can’t un notice it and it drives me bonkers!!

HopeSpringsInfernal · 24/07/2025 22:24

Not a spelling mistake as such, but 'wait list' really annoys me if it has obviously been used by someone in the UK. What happened to 'waiting list'?

Oh, and blood work's another one. Surely we have blood tests?

It's like trying to make something seem bountiful and fancy. Like nobody has ever seen three kinds of supermarket deli meat and a bit of brie and cheddar?!

cornflourblue · 24/07/2025 12:04

I am Scottish, living in Scotland, and have never used it, nor does anyone I know (except my DC who get ticked off for using it!)

Amy MacDonald, the Scottish singer, uses gotten on her Instagram videos I’ve noticed.

Knittedfairies2 · 24/07/2025 22:42

I've noticed 'barley' instead of 'barely' several times, but that might be a spellcheck thing.
