Famous people you thought would be nice, but were tw*ts?

Have you met someone famous and they turned out to be a bit of a twat?

I once met Steve Coogan (who I thought was hilarious as Alan Partridge) who was a sexist, lecherous buffoon IRL.

Nobody tell that the Sir Dr Brian May out of Queen was mardy .
I will not believe you (and I'll blame his clogs for chafing his long slender feet )

You've not been set a challenge !

Timothy West. If you are going to slag off a dead person, at least get their name right.

I didn't remember it. I doubt he would have remembered mine either tbh.

Re. Prunella Scales, Danny Baker used to have a running joke on his radio show about someone "going right off the Prunella Scales" when they blew their top about something, such was her reputation for kicking off at people. I think someone on a phone in had been on the receiving end.

Re. Rik Mayall, sadly never met him personally but I think about this bloke on Twitter's story so much, it's the stupidest, funniest thing I have ever seen. What a guy! x.com/pineappleghost/status/1236232609543356416

Ah that's interesting about Prunella Scales. It was a total surprise as I for some reason expected her to be lovely.

ThesophisticatedJY · 22/07/2025 17:51

I met many celebrities in my job as cabin crew - Brian May was the nicest one I ever met , so down to earth and lovely . He was wearing a badge and I admired it - he gave it to me . Lovely man

I read the Alan Rickman diary book….sounded a bit of a jerk in the book…although I just loved him as sherif of Nottingham in the Robin Hood film!

That book was terrible, it totally smashed my illusion of the man. TBH I was a bit surprised his wife released it.

Alan Davies, sat next to him across the aisle on a plane once, quite a while ago. He was very sneery and took the mick out of me reading to my daughter. I didn't take to him and was surprised as I thought he would be nice in real life.

You thought the Alan Davies who got paralytic and bit a homeless person would be nice?

He used to frequent a pub I went to in Muswell Hill, one Halloween we were out and squeezed past him at the bar as it was packed. My friend turned to say hi to him but before she could even say anything he said "Oh fuck off"
Ive always thought he was an arsehole since.

A bit of Midlands speak emerging there 👀

Michael Rosen, he was so kind and a very good conversationalist. He made my day chatting whilst we waited. Love reading his books to my class and telling them I have met him.

Oh god, for a minute there I thought you were going to say he was an arsehole, and I think I’d have cried! At this point in life I have virtually no illusions left to shatter, but that would have been one of them 😂

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 22/07/2025 17:56

Nick Helm, comedian who was in Uncle on bbc3. Went to see him live and his whole act was based on being angry, shouty and petrifying his audience. Met him at the bar afterwards and he was a lovely, softly spoken sweetheart.

LakieLady · 22/07/2025 17:58

I was having lunch in a pub once when there was a loud, arrogant, pompous sounding bloke gobbing off at the bar. When I got up to go for a pee, I had to walk past him. It was Piers Morgan.

In the garden of another pub, a charming man came over and asked if it would be ok for his little girls to say hello to my dogs. He was pleasant and chatty, his daughters were really lovely, and he seemed very familiar.

When we got in the car, I turned to the late Mr Lakie and said "I'm sure I've met that guy before, he's very familiar", to which he replied "Didn't you recognise him? That was Mark Williams." As I'm shite at names as well as faces, he then had to remind me who Mark Williams was. 😆

I once said hello to David Dimbleby in a supermarket, because his face was so familiar I thought he was someone I knew.

Helena bonham carter told me to fuck off once in hampstead when she cut me up at a junction 😂

My Mum met Terry Jones & Michael Palin on seperate occasions (signings) and said they were both charming; especially Terry Jones when he found out I was studying history, asked loads of questions about what I was studying. Was alo incredibly touched when my Mum told him how much we had both loved one of his children's books when I was little.

I spent a weekend working with Michael York, he was incredibly polite and charming to everyone whether they were a guest at the event or staff. To the point where he refused to go to his catered lunch until he was sure myself & the other girl working with him had something to eat while he was away.

Andy Serkis was very funny and seemed to have a lot of time for people.

William Shatner; bit mixed. He was very sweet to a little girl in the queue in front of us (he was chatting to her & her Mum about her costume) but a bit stand offish with myself and my friend.

Rik Mayall was exactly like he comes across in interviews. Really hyper, very funny, had time for us but definitely had a lech vibe. To give him the benefit of the doubt though he had literally just come off stage so might have been on a high still.

Charlton Heston, according to my Mum, was a complete arsehole.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 22/07/2025 18:02

Humanity will collapse of anyone says anything bad about Michael Palin.

Cilla Black crops up so often on this type of thread that I suspect she actually was a complete cow all the time.

I was at a Life on Mars Q&A once and Philip Glenister leaned back in his chair to answer a question and went completely arse over tit. Absolutely roared with laughter, not pompous at all and was really nice and down to earth.

A friend of mine played opposite Cilla in a Panto. She (my friend) had to do a lot of lip biting and eye rolling, especially when CB kept going on about ‘our Jack’.

feliciabirthgiver · 22/07/2025 16:14

Kirstie Allsop very snooty and referred to me as ‘the staff’ on the flipside Paul McCartney is a very kind and generous man.

I'm so glad you said that about Paul McCartney! I've never met him but he's always struck me as being a nice, down to earth sort of bloke.

AntiquePenguin · 22/07/2025 18:06

Am I the only person on MN who has never met a famous person? I've seen a few in the distance and I've known a couple of people before they were famous but I've never spoken to anyone with active celebrity status, not even z-list.

Maybe she'd had bad news or wasn't feeling well.

A friend of mine was on Blind Date and said Cilla Black was absolutely lovely to him and other guests.

I was surprised as all I had heard before and since BD was how awful she were.

Kate8889 · 22/07/2025 18:09

I met Anthony Rapp (he was in RENT) and after getting very little sleep and standing in line for hours, I vomited on him, he was very gracious about it.

aRightNowProblem · 22/07/2025 18:09

Claire sweeney- so stuck up and sneezy. Tried to act like a complete diva and treated staff at a theatre she was on tour at with disgust and distain unnecessarily.

on the flip side Brian May was absolutely beyond lovely to me when I was 16/17, treated me as an equal and had a proper conversation and seemed to actually care and ask what my opinion was. Not creepy or lecherous at all, lovely man!

Different people I know have met and worked with Carol Klein and Alan Titchmarsh, both TV gardeners. I was shocked by what I heard about Carol--they said she was difficult and let professional colleagues down all the time by not turning up when she was supposed to. Nobody had a bad word to say about Alan and everyone loved him. I met Jane Goodall once who was lovely.

Edited

I met Alan Titchmarsh some years ago - he was presenting awards at an event I went to. I had expected him to be quite pompous and snooty but he was absolutely lovely.

FranklyDontGiveADamn · 22/07/2025 18:14

Will Mellor - absolute heart of gold. Genuinely down to earth, does loads for his local community. Was incredibly kind to a young local lad who had cancer and made a point of checking in on him regularly - no other motive than to cheer him up and help him through.

I met Keith Allen once, and he was very nice.
Steve Coogan nearly ran me over on his pushbike near The British Library.

I was disappointed to meet the famous linguist David Crystal. He was a long term hero of mine, but he turned out to be a patronising mansplainer and we had a bit of an argument.

I actually applied to the university he lectured at, BECAUSE he was there. I then met him at an open day and thought nope, not for me, and went elsewhere.
