Have you met someone famous and they turned out to be a bit of a twat?

I once met Steve Coogan (who I thought was hilarious as Alan Partridge) who was a sexist, lecherous buffoon IRL.

Alan Davies, sat next to him across the aisle on a plane once, quite a while ago. He was very sneery and took the mick out of me reading to my daughter. I didn't take to him and was surprised as I thought he would be nice in real life.

Jimmy Carr…complete arrogant twat

Yes Jimmy Carr! A close friend, very sweet, polite woman met him (when she'd paid a significant sum to see him live) and he was unbelievably rude and unpleasant, foul-mouthed. Truly obnoxious person.

Chicheguevara · 22/07/2025 17:04

I met Mark Knopfler a couple of times, in the course of my work, and he was lovely. I met Eric Clapton, same job, also Lovely. David Bowie was an absolute delight, very chatty and funny.

I found Tony Robinson to be quite abrasive, Phil Harding was downright rude and Professor Mick Aston was brilliant. Also guesting on Time Team, Sandi Toksvig who I would cross lava to chat to again, she was wonderful.

I also managed to have met, through work, Ainsley Harriott who was fantastic fun, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, very abrupt. I had no idea who he was and feel he was not happy about it. Ron Pearlman was very pleasant, Joanna Lumley was charming and seemed to be genuinely interested in people she was speaking to, as was George Harrison. I also met Jimmy Carr and am in the charming camp with him. Also Matt Baker in his Blue Peter days. Connie and the other woman were less friendly but Matt was engaging and really interested in everyone.

None of the work roles were wildly high powered, I am a contracting administrator who has had a few good breaks with some short term-contracts. Had some properly terrible ones too.

ShinyWorthKeeping · 22/07/2025 17:05

Su Pollard is exactly as you'd expect, mad! My (then) 2 year old barked at her and she barked back! She was wearing long fake plaits attached to an alice band. Quiet voice though.

My reverse side is James Martin. I had the privilege of spending a day having a cooking lesson with him, and not only was he just as down-to-earth and unaffected as he appears on our screens, but he was also incredibly kind and empathetic, a side of his character that you don't see on the TV!

On the flip side of that, my Dad, Husband and friend went on a tall ship sailing day many many years ago and James Martin was on there with a camera crew, and isolated himself away from everyone only appeared on deck to do a few bits to camera before hiding away again, the camera crew were lovely and chatted with everyone and joined in with everything until they were needed to film.

My cousin when he was about 7 met John major at a motorway service station. He was having his breakfast and my cousin walked up to him and asked for an autograph. His security started to move him but apparently John was really nice and friendly. I always have the spitting image John major when I hear his name so he was completely different to how I expected😂

DH nearly got punched by Mark Knopfler when he was about 17. It was at his uncle’s wedding (uncle had done some work for Knopfler) and DH decided to try and drunkenly tell Knopfler how much he loved Dire Straits. To be fair DH did say he’d probably have wanted to punch his annoying-drunk-teen-self as well!

jalepenowine · 22/07/2025 17:07

Through work I met Rowan Atkinson, he was very quiet and came across almost shy. It was a brief interaction but thought he was very sweet.

Another was Keith Flint from the Prodigy. Also a very quiet and sweet individual.

Radioundermypillow · 22/07/2025 17:07

Yes - Prunella Scales. Sat opposite her at a friend's wedding and next to her husband Jeremy West. Both utterly uninterested in me or any other civilian. Moaned to each other about the food, looked down her nose at anyone trying to start conversation, but lit up as soon as another famous actor appeared.

I had the opposite with him! Busy Starbucks and we were looking for a seat; he was at a table by himself and called over saying there was space at his table. We sat down (students at the time) and he made chit chat, asked us what we were studying and made some jokes. Was very personable and nice enough for random chit chat.

Ilovemychocolate · 22/07/2025 17:10

I met Lulu and she was unbelievably arrogant and kept talking about herself in the third person.
Oh and she has TERRIBLE skin!

Bloozie · 22/07/2025 17:11

Annie Lennox and Kate Bush. Annie was incredibly vain, Kate manipulative.

Rainbird26 · 22/07/2025 17:13

I met Vinnie Jones years ago in a local pub - he was absolutely lovely,
totally down to earth, friendly and funny! And absolutely massive, the screen doesn’t really show how tall and broad he is!

DancingNotDrowning · 22/07/2025 17:13

Another one: James Cracknell.

We stayed in a holiday property next door to him and his family, we shared some out door space with them so paths naturally crossed. Our DC were very similar ages but weren’t allowed anywhere near ours and we were generally treated with great disdain.

DrNo007 · 22/07/2025 17:16

Different people I know have met and worked with Carol Klein and Alan Titchmarsh, both TV gardeners. I was shocked by what I heard about Carol--they said she was difficult and let professional colleagues down all the time by not turning up when she was supposed to. Nobody had a bad word to say about Alan and everyone loved him. I met Jane Goodall once who was lovely.

Tillow4ever · 22/07/2025 17:16

This is very outing for anyone that knows me but sod it!

I’ve met almost everyone from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Firefly. I have been genuinely surprised by how friendly and nice all of them were. The ones that stood out as exceptionally nice were:

Nathan Fillion - just an absolute sweetheart
Alan Tudyk - spent ages asking me about my pregnancy despite it being an event for him and his colleagues
Morena Baccarin - similarly spent a while asking about my pregnancy too
Juliet Landau - kept saying how she loved my nickname and was going to tell one of the other cast members who shared the name when she got back
James Marsters - an absolute gentleman who didn’t rush anyone and made sure to see everyone waiting to meet him
Bailey Chase - made a huge effort to dress up really smartly for the photo shoot with fans despite a heavy party with the cast and fans the night before AND it turning out that he and the other guests had not been paid by the event organisers (in fact every single guest there that weekend was amazing despite this fact, unlike a certain David Boreanaz who wasn’t happy about something at another event and was a miserable twat the whole time)

I won’t called DB out as being awful though, as at another event he was charming, friendly, smiling, engaging - clearly had a bad day the first time round and we all have that occasionally!

Cecemonkeylou · 22/07/2025 17:18

Dawn French, was an utterly rude cow to me. I was so polite and doing my job wrapping her items (I worked in accessorize monsoon). Snatched the bag after throwing a debit card at me)

I was surprised myself, tbh. From what I'd seen of him I was expecting him to be a bit of a k**b. I mentioned an elderly relative being terminally ill and that she was a big fan of his Saturday shows. He then proceeded to do something entirely selfless, generous and thoughtful, for which I will be eternally grateful to him for the joy it brought to my relative. I couldn't hate him if I tried!

Maybe he was feeling seasick 😁

Peter Andre.
Met him at a charity event for disabled children when he was with Katie price who brought her son Harvey. He was awful, behaved like a complete child, rude, nasty, desperate for all the attention, and completely uninterested in anyone else when the cameras weren’t on him.
Katie Price on the other hand, who everyone expected to be awful was really lovely, genuinely kind and interested in the event and all the children.
At one point she was speaking and said something about her son not likely the noise of cutlery banging together and he decided she’d pronounced it wrong, really laughed and mocked her, getting really excited about getting other people to laugh and asking her to say it over and over. He kept bringing it back up and just thought it was absolutely hilarious that she’d embarrassed herself when she really hadn’t and he was the only one who should have been embarrassed.

I can’t comment on Peter A but a friend of mine had a Saturday job in WHSmiths when Katie was doing a book tour for the novel with her name on the cover (which she cheerfully admitted in a TV interview she hadn’t read far less actually written).

Apparently she was lovely - personalised messages, stayed hours past the contracted time so nobody was disappointed, was really nice to even the most junior staff.

It makes me sad when I see how her life had ended up.

I just had a mini panic there. I dont think Amir Khan is the brightest button.

Ah bless you - I totally understand! No he’s not!

Famous people I’ve met at various times:

Jeremy Paxman — talkative and charming, but a name-dropper
Michael Gove — charming, and seems like a good listener, but quite shallow
Gyles Brandreth — smarmy, lecherous and a name-dropper
Prince Philip (when alive obvs! 😆) — acerbic and funny, catty sense of humour
Princess Margaret — disgruntled, frustrated and a bit fed up, also quite catty

I’m sure there are more, will add when I can remember!

Name dropping, you say?

Annie Lennox and Kate Bush. Annie was incredibly vain, Kate manipulative.

I've met Kate Bush professionally over the years (I'm also a fan, obviously) and she was always so humble and incredibly sweet. I have never heard anybody say anything bad about her, so this is surprising. In what way is she manipulative?

Annie Lennox is supposed to be another good 'un.

ZiggyZowie · 22/07/2025 17:23

Rik Mayall. who was really interesting to talk to. It was just after the first series of the Young Ones and he said there was going to be a second series on Thursday nights.

We said oh pity as always out Thursdays and don't have a video.
Cue episode in the Young ones second series , "oh you've got a video, yes I've got a video,". Maybe we inspired it....
Anyway,he was a laugh and he then did his sneery f**k off and the Vs persona, which we did back , decent guy.

Beverlymacker1 · 22/07/2025 17:28

Vic Reeves came in very often to a bookshop I used to work in. Rude, entitled and his children were feral.
