Famous people you thought would be nice, but were tw*ts?

Have you met someone famous and they turned out to be a bit of a twat?

I once met Steve Coogan (who I thought was hilarious as Alan Partridge) who was a sexist, lecherous buffoon IRL.

God, I wonder if these people realised they were signing up to be a sort of permanent Butlins Redcoat to the world when they got into TV. Sounds awful. Imagine having to be "on" like this all the time - even when you're on your period or your mum is in hospital or you just haven't slept.

In fact, Alan Rickman was well known by technical theatre crews (who were working with him over a period of months) to be sneery, unreasonable and an all-round arsehole - so I think you got him right!

A friend of mine once was organising something he came to speak at and sadly she had the exact same impression.

MamainWonderland · 22/07/2025 18:17

I didn't realise I had met Tony Bennett! He came into the bookshop I worked in in Central London when I was at university. He was very smart and had an assistant lurking, but that wasn't particularly unusual for Piccadilly. He was asking for advice on gardening books of all things, so we had a nice chat and I helped him buy some big glossy books on English Country Gardens. I thought he was charming - and it was only when the rest of the staff descended on me to find out what we'd been talking about that I realised he wasn't quite the normal kind of customer! He didn't once indicate that I should recognise him - or show irritation that I clearly hadn't! In fact, I think he quite liked just having a very normal, incognito chat about Sissinghurst and whether he should visit the gardens - hah! I'll always remember him as being a really gentle, lovely man.

You thought the Alan Davies who got paralytic and bit a homeless person would be nice?

Oh my God! That's a shock! People do stupid, awful things, but that is really terrible.
I will never watch him again.

Julie Walters is an absolute darling and so friendly.
Johnny Depp is very humble, softly spoken and kind!
Ant and Dec and Peter Andre - all come across lively and friendly and bubbly and were all twats.

I met Ant and Dec through work and they were charming - signed autographs and posed for photo's with about 150 staff with good humor and kind words.

OSTMusTisNT · 22/07/2025 18:18

He isnt on TV much now but the celebrity chef Nick Nairn was very rude and unpleasant.

Many of the behaviours described would be rude from a non-celebrity. We all have to be "on" when we are out in public - i.e. pleasant, civilised, well-mannered - the only difference would be that if I, one random, told another random to "fuck off" in the pub, it wouldn't be posted on social media as newsworthy.

Yes - Prunella Scales. Sat opposite her at a friend's wedding and next to her husband Jeremy West. Both utterly uninterested in me or any other civilian. Moaned to each other about the food, looked down her nose at anyone trying to start conversation, but lit up as soon as another famous actor appeared.

Timothy West I thought his name was?

I’ll tell you who is bloody lovely - Jermaine Jackson. I was blown away by how decent, kind and nice he was. LaToya is mad as a box of frogs. I worked with them over a long weekend in Glasgow so feel I spent enough time with them to make a fair call. Oh and Amir Khan is an idiot.

Which Amir Khan? Boxer or doctor?

Dontsayyouloveme · 22/07/2025 18:21

Russell Brand - totally lovely 😬
Kevin Clifton - errr who do you think you are?

Years ago, about half a century, the group Marmalade came to play at our local theatre. My friend and I were at the bar before the gig and a couple of older men in denim jackets and flairs tried to buy us a drink and chat us up. We were 18 and laughed and walked off. Little did we know that these were members of the group we had paid to see! Still, make a good tale 50 years on. Anyone even heard of Marmalade?

The first record I was bought was Oblidi Oblada! I probably could still remember the words. But I thought it was a cover name for the Beatles?

Carpedimum · 22/07/2025 18:25

I met Carol Ann Duffy whose work I admire greatly. Her behaviour was awful. She’s the only woman I’ve witnessed being truly lecherous over another woman and it was nauseating and embarrassing.

A friend of mine was on Blind Date and said Cilla Black was absolutely lovely to him and other guests.

I was surprised as all I had heard before and since BD was how awful she were.

The video of Cilla and the undercover Cosmopolitan journalist who infiltrated Blind Date really doesn't show CB in a good light.

Am I the only person on MN who has never met a famous person? I've seen a few in the distance and I've known a couple of people before they were famous but I've never spoken to anyone with active celebrity status, not even z-list.

It probably depends a lot on where you live, and whom you consider famous.

I have no clue who soap or reality ‘stars’ are because I never watch soaps, or influencers, but living in London, even in fairly scuzzy bits. you would just run into people. Anne Marie Duff and James McAvoy (when still a couple) used to shop in our Sainsbury’s, and Peter Capaldi lived a few doors down from a friend in Crouch End. DH’s workplace shared a building with a talent agency, and you would run into Stephen Fry or Fiona Shaw in the lift. Or just pass people on the street. Ian McKellen once stole my taxi. I sat across from Elijah Wood on the Victoria line. I used to get coffee at the same place as Stephen Gately when he was doing Joseph.

But we don’t have to deal with people bothering us for selfies when we’re out having dinner with our families, or surreptitiously filming us and putting it on SM, or expecting us to be friendly and polite when we’re the fiftieth person to drunkenly shout their ‘catchphrase’ at them on the street.

Another2Cats · 22/07/2025 18:31

I've only ever met two well known people, both of them were very nice indeed.

The first was Ernie Wise (one half of Morecombe & Wise). A friend of mine used to live next door and a couple of times, around when I was 12 or 13, I met him and he always came across as very nice and friendly.

Then, when I went to university, I once met Princess Anne at a Hall dinner which she attended. I was sat very close and we shared some conversation over dinner. She came across as very incisive and interested.

[EDIT]

Several years later, I briefly worked for the Daily Telegraph. Shared a lift a few times with Boris Johnson; definitely not the friendliest of people.

Twonewcats · 22/07/2025 18:31

Alan Davies was on a train with his family. He was being a prick to the staff onboard and then laughing behind their backs.

I live in a medium sized town up north, so not celebrity central! I'm not a soap/influencer fan either, but if someone I was with said "Oooh, that's so-and-so from Coronation street" I'd tag along out of interest if they wanted an autograph!

didgeridid · 22/07/2025 18:31

We met Thomas f Wilson who played Biff from back to the future at a comic con. He definitely thought he was as famous as Christopher Lloyd and was an absolute bell end. He was so rude and signed over Christopher Lloyd and Micheal J Foxes autograph in someone's delorean
Met a couple of famous people Chris Barry - Rimmer from red dwarf was lovely and so was Joe Pasquale

Karistyleaftea · 22/07/2025 18:34

Lee Child was lovely, really liked his voice and he came across so well .
He was dealing with some rather silly questions from the audience and responded with such charming answers.
DC met him at another event and confirms he was the same there.

Dontcallmescarface · 22/07/2025 18:34

Ed Sheeran...rude, arrogant and quite bitchy. Whenever I see that he's performing anywhere I always feel sympathy to the backstage staff. Tim Minchin, on the other hand is a total sweetheart.

Surely, they know that kind of thing is the price you pay for being famous? Why would people go into television or acting or whatever - a profession dependent on your face becoming known to people - and then be bitter about being recognised? If they don't like it, don't do it - drop out of TV and retrain as an accountant/solicitor/supermarket cashier/whatever - people will soon lose interest.

Batmam · 22/07/2025 18:36

Never met her myself but Cilla Black was widely reported to be a horrible woman …which really surprised (ha) me at the time

DrainPip · 22/07/2025 18:36

Another one for piling on the Steve Coogan isn't nice bandwagon. I'm an absolute AP nut but boy was he a twat.

I used to work at a small visitor attraction that had quite a special reputation and we quite often had celebrities visit, both UK and international.

Many (not particularly big but noteworthy) celebrities just booked normal visits - we'd sometimes spot a name on a booking list but often just it was a nice surprise on the day. In this category (just top of my head names) are:

  • Jenny Eclair
  • Mel Gedroyc
  • Lucy Punch
  • Monty Don
  • Sam Neill
  • Bill Nighy
  • Eddie Redmayne

All absolutely 'standard' engagements with zero fuss about their visits whatsoever, happy to mingle with the public. Big ticks from me for them.

A number of celebrities arranged private tours - absolutely fine, we do this for lots of people on the 'cleaning' day for the property / after hours etc - just charge more for them. These included people like Kate Moss, Julia Roberts and quite a number of VERY wealthy people. Again while for some of these the requirements in advance were exacting, they were all really enjoyable visits with minimal fuss.

The one person who kicked up an almighty fuss, had their secretary ring while they were ON THE WAY giving us no time at all, was Steve Coogan. We had visitors already on site, booked and enjoying their visits. They expected everyone to drop everything, clear the afternoon and send everyone home and for staff to stay after hours to accommodate them. I said yes fine but they'd need to see things in a particular order so that the right staff are available as some needed to go home. Once they arrived they proceeded to deliberately ignore this, taking hours going round everything in the wrong order. I tried to charge for a private visit as they were staying after hours and really put everyone out - we'd be paying overtime etc too. They were not having it. Absolute entitled fucker. Still love Partridge tho.
